HISTORY Home AboutUs ContactUs Profile ... High Commission Bush people were the original inhabitants of Botswana. They originated in the north and have gradually migrated southwards. Approximately 2,000 years ago the Hottentots followed the Bush people who were then followed by Bantu speakers. The three groups coexisted happily and there was a flourishing trade between them. Shona speakers settled in the north east of Botswana in around the 10th century AD. The first Tswana settled in the south east of Botswana in approximately the 15th century possibly having migrated from the south. By the 18th century the Tswana were very well established in the area. In 1820 various clans began to form into a string of nations along what is now the border between Botswana and South Africa this was prompted because the clans felt the need to defend themselves against the tide of humanity fleeing from the Transvaal and Natal between 1820 and 1840 as a result of Zulu militancy and Boer expansionism. The borders were secured in 1885 with the declaration of a British protectorate known as Bechuanaland, the reason behind the declaration was the rivalry between the British and the Boers

The Semi-nomadic San people were Botswana's earliest inhabitants. Bantu speaking tribes from the north moved into the area before the first millennium. And European missionaries arrived in the mid 19 th century..In 1885, to counter Boer expansion from South africa and Ndebele incursions from the north led by Mzilikazi, Botswana came under British protection. By 1895, Rhodes' British South Africa Company hoped to annex Botswana, prompting three Botswana chiefs to persuade Queen Victoria to keep her land under British control. The British administered the Bechaunaland protectorate until 1966 when it granted Botswana full independence under the leadership of Sir Seretse Khama. Diamonds were discovered in 1967, which brought rapid growth to Botswana. Today, the country boasts healthy foreign reserves and is considered one Africa's economics success stories.

Southern Africa's human history extends back through the millennia to the first rumblings of humanity on the planet. The first upright-walking 'hominids' established themselves in the savannas of southern and eastern Africa nearly 4 million years ago. These human-like creatures slowly developed into persons-as-we-know-'em as more sophisticated tools were produced and climatic conditions became more favourable. By the middle Stone Age, which lasted until 20,000 years ago, organised hunting and gathering societies had been established, and by 8000BC, late Stone Age people occupied rock shelters and caves all over southern Africa. The first inhabitants of Zimbabwe were probably nomadic, adaptable San groups, gradually absorbed by Khoi-Khoi grazier tribes, and slowly transmuting into a culture known as Khoisan. Bantu-speaking farmers, either Khoisan settlers or Iron Age migrants from the north, were the first occupants of the Great Zimbabwe site in the south of the country. Between 500 and 1000AD, the Gokomere (a Bantu group into gold-mining and cattle ranching) enslaved and absorbed San groups in the area. As early as the 11th century, some foundations and stonework were in place at Great Zimbabwe and the settlement, generally regarded as the nascent Shona society, became the trading capital of the wealthiest and most powerful society in south-eastern Africa. The hilltop acropolis at Great Zimbabwe came to serve not only as a fortress but as a shrine for the worship of Mwari, the pre-eminent Shona deity. By the 15th century, Great Zimbabwe's influence had begun to decline, due to a heady cocktail of overpopulation, overgrazing, popular uprisings and political fragmentation.

    About Botswana
Home Page Call for Papers Accommodation HIV/AIDS Sites Botswana is a land-locked country in Southern Africa. The climate is quite hot in summer (November to March), but winters (June to August) are pleasant, with sunny days and cold nights. Gaborone, the capital, has a population of approximately 150,000 people, a healthy climate, and all modern amenities. There is no significant risk of malaria in Gaborone, although it is found in the far north, such as the Okavango Delta. Almost uniquely in Africa, Botswana has an unbroken record of peaceful multi-party democracy since independence in 1966. Botswana was a British colony (the Bechuanaland Protectorate) and is now a member of the Commonwealth. The current president is Mr. Festus Mogae. The people are composed of a number of different groups, including the historically dominant Tswana (Setswana-speakers), Kalanga, numerous groups of Basarwa (KhoeSan language groups) and others. The national language is Setswana, which nearly all people in the country speak to some degree, and the official language is English, which is used for conducting government business and at the university. Prior to European contact, the Batswana lived as herders and farmers under tribal rule. In the late 19th century, hostilities broke out between the Batswana and Boer settlers from the Transvaal . San (Bushmen) were the aboriginal inhabitants of what is now Botswana, but they constitute only a small portion of the population today. The Tswana supplanted the San, who remained as subjects. Beginning in the 1820s, the region was disrupted by the expansion of the Zulu and their offshoot, the Ndebele. However, Khama II, chief of the Ngwato (the largest Tswana nation), curbed the depredations of the Ndebele and established a fairly unified state. A new threat arose in the late 19th cent. with the incursion of Boers (Afrikaners) from neighboring Transvaal . After gold was discovered in the region in 1867, the Transvaal government sought to annex parts of Botswana. Although the British forbade annexation, the Boers continued to encroach on native lands during the 1870s and 80s. German colonial expansion in South West Africa (Namibia) caused the British to reexamine their policies, and, urged on by Khama III Britain provided for the eventual transfer of Bechuanaland to the Union of South Africa; in succeeding years, however, South Africa's attempts at annexation were countered by British insistence that Bechuanaland's inhabitants first be consulted. The rise of the National party in South Africa in 1948 and its pursuit of

The Okavango Delta Peoples of Botswana
The Bugakwe, Dxeriku, Hambukushu, Wayeyi, and Xanekwe Peoples
The Okavango Delta of the Republic of Botswana is a large wetland surrounded by the Kalahari desert. The Okavango is a unique ecosystem and has large populations of African mammals, birds, and other animals. Conservationists have taken a great interest in the preservation of the Delta. Of less interest have been the 100,000 people who call the Delta home. This site is dedicated to the dissemination of information concerning the Okavango Delta Peoples.
Who are the Okavango Delta Peoples?
As seen above, there are myriad spellings of the names of each of these ethnic groups. The spellings of ethnic group names I use here are those used by most members of those groups whom I know. Also, I use the term Bushmen because most English-speaking Bugakwe and Xanekwe I know use that term in referring to San peoples. It may very well be that as members of those groups become more involved in the pan-San movement in southern Africa another term may become favored.
Anthropological Research among the Okavango Delta Peoples
Given the range occupied by these groups and the interest in the Okavango Delta, there has been surprisingly little anthropological or other long-term social and/or cultural research among these peoples. Some research was done in Botswana from the 1940's to the 1970's by Tom Larson among the Hambukushu and Wayeyi and H-J Heinz among the Xanekwe and Bugakwe. Since 1990 I have been conducting research on family composition, children's activities and socialization into systems of learning and knowledge, traditional and modern economic patterns, and the effects of economic development and integration into national level political, economic, and social institutions among people from all five ethnic groups in two villages.
