Country Info Botswana Introduction Botswana General Data Botswana Maps Botswana Culture ... Botswana Time and Date Botswana History Back to Top The Tswana migrated to the region that is now Botswana by 1800 and displaced the native San. Missionaries, including David Livingstone and Robert Moffat from Scotland, arrived in the first half of the 19th century and established missions. The territory was taken under British protection in 1885, after all the principal chiefs complained that Boers, or Afrikaners, from the Transvaal region in what is now northern South Africa, were invading their territories. The history of Botswana is in general the history of the Kalahari area, intermediate between the more populated savanna of the north and east and the less populated steppe of the south and west. Although reduced to a peripheral role in southern Africa for most of the 20th century, at other times Botswana has been a central area of historical development. Since independence, Botswana has taken a nonaligned stance in foreign affairs. While it opposed the former racial policies of neighboring South Africa, Botswana has, out of economic necessity, maintained close ties with that country. During World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945) contingents from Bechuanaland, as Botswana was then called, served overseas and on their return helped stimulate economic and political change. The first elections to a legislative council were held in 1961. Under the name Botswana, the country achieved independence in 1966, with the former prime minister, Sir Seretse Khama, as the first president. When Khama died in 1980, he was succeeded by Quett Ketumile Joni Masire, who was reelected by the legislature in 1984, 1989, and 1994. Masire retired from politics in 1998 and was succeeded by his vice president, Festus Mogae. The National Assembly elected Mogae to a new five-year term in 1999.

The industrial revolution in Europe had created a need for new markets and raw materials. This precipitated a later rush for Africa from traders seeking concessions for their governments. Moreover, the gun - a new method for hunting - had been introduced to Batswana, who realised the value and power of firearms after a handful of Boers had been able to rout the Ndebele tribe in the 1830s. Even the best hunters struggled to make a living in South Africa, the game having been depleted. They turned their attention to the unexplored north. The game soon dwindled, unable to

Struggle for Independence In March 1885. Botswana was declared a British Protectorate by Royal Decree. Extensive territories belonging to Botswana's southern chiefdoms were incorporated into the then British colony of South Africa under the name of British Bechuanaland. At first most Batswana chiefs except Khama III of the Ngwato who had asked for British protection in 1870, resisted and were suspicious of British protection. During the colonial period various attempts were made to incorporate Botswana into Rhode's colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1895. and later into the Union of South Africa. The attempt by the Union of South Africa to annex Botswana was a more serious threat to the protectorate until self-government in 1965.

History and Government
History:
The early 19th century brought another period of upheaval as peoples from the north, dislocated by slavery and the collapse of their local economies, moved to new territory. The Kololo were followed by the Ndebele. They were quickly succeeded by British colonialists and Boer settlers. The local rulers, notably the Tswana King Sechele, who ruled between 1829 and 1892, allied themselves with the British against the Boers. In a form of sub-contracted or privatised colonialism characteristic of the British Empire, Botswana was eventually brought under full British colonial control in 1890 by the British South Africa Company, who supervised the territory and which became known as Bechuanaland Protectorate.
Government: Executive power is held by the President, who is elected by the legislature, the National Assembly (40 out of the 44 members of which are elected by universal adult suffrage). The President appoints a Cabinet and receives advice from the House of Chiefs.

BRIEF HISTORY OF BOTSWANA.
  • People settled in Botswana as early as the Fourth Century AD.The earliest inhabitants of the region, the hunter-gatherer San people, can still to be found in Botswana's remote areas. Botswana was never a colony. The country's Paramount Chiefs sought British protection to forestall Boer incorporation of the country into South Africa. The discovery of the rich Orapa, Letlhakane and Jwaneng diamond mines after independence, laid the foundation for Botswana's stable economy.
SETTLEMENTS The early history of the people and territory of Botswana is still being uncovered, as archaeologists sift evidence from legend. Indications of settled communities go back as far as the fourth century. Before that, the territory was sparsely populated by hunter-gatherer communities of the San people. Major settlements took place in the early 16th century. British missionaries arrived in the 19th century. Batswana Paramount Chiefs Bathoen, Sebele and Khama "the Great", sought British Government protection against the Boer threat in the last quarter of the 19th Century.

Exploring Botswana Exploring Botswana Africa Homepage Geographia Home Botswana is one of the few remaining destinations in Africa that still provides a good sense of the adventure of safari. Its expansive game parks and preserves, while offering wildlife as diverse and abundant as that found anywhere else, are still largely undeveloped and untamed. Botswana lies immediately to the north of South Africa. It is bordered on the north and west by Namibia, on the north and east by Zimbabwe, and is connected by a narrow strip of land on the northern border to Zambia. Its territory consists almost entirely of a broad, flat, arid subtropical plateau, though there are hills in the eastern part of the country. In the northwest, the Okavango River empties into the Kalahari sands, creating the largest inland river delta in the world. While the Okavango Delta is home to relatively few large game animals in comparison to other areas of Botswana, its clear waters and myriad small islands are home to an astounding variety of birds, plants, and smaller species of animals. Nearby is Chobe National Park, a beautiful grassland reserve that has gained international fame for its abundant elephant population. Southeast of Chobe are Botswana's enormous Makgadikgadi salt pans, home to large herds of blue wildebeest, several antelope species, and those international lovers of salt pans, flamingos.

History: Between the 7th and 13th centuries, parts of Botswana were populated by thriving agricultural communities. In the 14th century, these communities came under the control of powerful Tswana dynasties originating in the region to the east that is now South Africa's Transvaal. A further series of migrations followed the break-up of the main Tswana kingdoms, the Hurutshe and the Kwena, from the late 17th century; these migrants were firmly established in the southern part of Botswana by the 18th century and established a powerful military state controlling hunting, cattle-breeding and copper mining.
The government's main domestic priority is to tackle the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Abroad, Botswana has tended generally to tread softly with respect to its large southern neighbour, South Africa, not least because of its considerable economic dependence. However Botswana is benefiting both politically and economically since the advent of democratic government in Pretoria. Relations with its other neighbours are normally cordial; Gaborone is the permanent home of the Southern African Development Conference which promotes economic development in the region. The government has expressed deep concern over recent political developments in Zimbabwe but can do little to influence the situation.

Note: The following was drawn from the sources [1,2,3]. History Batswana is a term which stands for all citizens of Botswana, regardless of ethnic origin (note: since 1946 the population was never counted by ethnic origin). It also refers to the country's major ethnic group, the "Tswana", which came into the area from South Africa during the Zulu wars of the early 1880s. Before colonialization the Batswana lived as herders and farmers. . Christian missionaries started the development of a common dialect of Setswana, which was finally standardized by the colonial authorities. . The British government puts "Bechuanaland" under its protection, after hostilities between the Batswana and Boer settlers. . Proclamations in 1934 regularize tribal rule and powers. (This goes back to the eight Tswana states which ruled most of the area in the 19th century. The people of these states were given the official colonial status of "tribes".) . A European-African advisory council was formed. . The constitution established a consultative legislative council.
