News - 2002 U.S. Synchronized Team Championships Get ready for the 2002 U.S. Synchronized Team Championships! For the first time ever, the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships head to the two-time Olympic village of Lake Placid, N.Y., just as the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City conclude. But even though the Olympic Center has not hosted this championship before, it is no stranger to hosting elite skating events. In fact, in the past six months the facility has seen some of the top skating stars in the world. The Venues A great place to start your Lake Placid visit, the museum gives a brief, yet informative taste of the Olympic history that encompasses Lake Placid. The museum also offers guided tours of the Olympic Center, providing a behind-the-scenes look at its history and on-going importance as a training and competition site. While figure skating is different from speed skating, the Olympic Speed Skating Oval welcomes people of all levels to give it a try. Situated in front of the Lake Placid High School, the Oval is open for public skating throughout the winter. Skating at night under the lights or during the day - on the same track where Eric Heiden made history winning five gold medals in the 1980 Games - should not be missed. A mere nine miles away in Wilmington, N.Y., Whiteface Mountain is a great escape. With the greatest vertical drop in the east, (3,430 ft.) skiers and riders come from miles around to the Olympic Mountain that also hosted the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games. The famed Kids Kampus, which was rated top ten in the country by CHILD magazine, offers a fun and easy learn-to-ski program for kids. The Whiteface Mountain Ski and Snowboard School has rentals and lesson programs for all levels -never-evers all the way up to experts. For those who would rather just enjoy the view, the Cloudsplitter gondola is open for foot passengers year-round and offers spectacular views of the Adirondacks.

A Brief History
T he first bowling centre to open in the North of Ireland was Dundonald International Icebowl (1987). Shortly thereafter, in 1988, the Northern Ireland Tenpin Bowling Association (NITBA), was formed. The NITBF came into being in 1994, replacing both the NITBA and Tenpin Bowling Association of Northern Ireland. This information is taken from the Constitution of the NITBF. The Federation has the full support of the British Tenpin Bowling Association (BTBA), the Sports Council for Northern Ireland, Federations des Quillers (FIQ) and World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA). In line with other developments in tenpin bowling within the United Kingdom, the NITBF is affiliated to the BTBA which, in addition to it's role as the Governing Body for England, represents the constituent Governing Bodies of the UK in international matters such as those concerning the International Olympic Council (IOC). HISTORY OF BILLIARDS
The history of billiards is long and very rich. The game has been played by kings and commoners, presidents, mental patients, ladies, gentlemen, and hustlers alike. It evolved from a lawn game similar to the croquet played sometime during the 15th century in Northern Europe and probably in France. more
The History of Snooker
The history of snooker is long and full of tradition. The game itself is a spin-off of Billiards that was popular from the 1500's, though only in very moneyed places like the royal palaces and aristocrats. more
The History Of Pool (America)
The History of Pool is a far more associated with the working class people than the history of snooker. The game developed in America as a spin-off to the grand British game of Snooker. more
Billiards in the United States of America
How billiards came to America has not been positively established. There are tales that it was brought to St. Augustine by the Spaniards in the 1580's but research has failed to reveal any trace of the game there. More likely it was brought over by Dutch and English settlers. more
WOMEN IN BILLIARDS
Until very recently, billiards was completely dominated by men. The atmosphere of the poolroom was very forbidding and women had trouble being accepted there. Nonetheless, women have been enthusiastic players since the game was brought up from the ground in the 15th century.

Welcome to my Sports Page
So here I get to talk about some of the things relating to my obsession of sports. I basically break up the discussion by each sport. You'll basically find that I always hate whoever is the best in a particular sport. Click on one of the following links if you want to go straight to a particular sport. Basketball Baseball Football Golf ... My Tough Luck Teams
Basketball
In basketball, my favorite team is the Utah Jazz. Mainly because of Stockton and Malone, one of the best 1-2 combinations of all time. By the time they're done, they may have the records for points, assists, steals, and even free throws and field goals made. Their durability is amazing. Also throw in Jeff Hornacek (before he retired) and Jerry Sloan, and you've got a cool team, but one with no NBA championships and only 2 Finals losses to the Bulls. I hated the Bulls, and Michael Jordan even more. I think Phil Jackson is terribly overrated because anyone can coach the teams that he's coached to NBA titles. I liked the Bad Boys Detroit Pistons, and liked both the Lakers and Celtics of the 80s. My vote for the greatest basketball player of all time: Wilt Chamberlain. Nobody has dominated the game like Wilt and no one ever will. People try to say he couldn't beat Russell, but that was because Russell was playing on teams with 5 hall of famers. The statistics never lie, and that's why I give the nod to Wilt, who did it all as a basketball player.

It was the first time that the Games were staged under the patronage of the Olympics Council of Asia. The success of the Games was a prelude to the staging of the Olympic Games in 1988 and the country's economic prosperity of the early nineties. Although the weather on the day of the opening ceremony was not kind, the Olympic stadium, with a capacity of 100,000, was filled to capacity. There were 25 disciplines this time, with bowling, fencing, judo and taekwondo being added to the growing list. South Korea launched their preparations for the Olympic Games by topping the medals tally with 224 medals, two more than China. However, the Chinese won the gold medal race, winning 94 medals, one more than the Koreans. Japan slipped further down the rankings, placing third.

In Olympic Footsteps: An International Tour
History meets athletic legend in cities throughout the globe, from Athens to Nagano.
By Colleen Kaleda
Athens, Greece

It was 776 B.C. when that first foot race was held, in Olympia, about 75 miles from Athens in the Peloponnese. Dedicated to Zeus, the Olympic festival was a religious rite, held every four years. The sacrifices have gone, but the athletic competitions and crowning of winners are our remainders of that ancient time.

Early History
T he origin of billiards will probably never be exactly pinpointed. While it may have sprung from earlier games played with balls on a table in China, Italy, or Spain, the best guess is that it originated in France as an indoor version of a lawn game similar to croquet. (On the other hand, some historians have suggested that croquet originated as an outdoor version of billiards.) The name almost certainly comes from the French billart , the stick that was used, and that word probably comes from bille , meaning "ball." When first recorded, in the 15th century, the object of the game was to push a ball through a croquet-like wicket to hit a peg, similar to the stake in croquet. Players used a club-like stick, which became known as the "mace" in England. When the ball was up against a rail, however, the head of the mace was too unwieldy and the other, narrower end of the stick was used. This was called the "queue," meaning tailhence the modern word, cue. Shakespeare refers to billiards in Antony and Cleopatrawhich led one early sports historian to conclude that it was an old Egyptian sportand by 1675 it was very popular in England. The first known rule book was published that year, and its writer claimed that there were "few Towns of note therein which hath not a publick Billiard-Table."
