The Ancient Olympic Games

The Olympic Games were first held in 776 BC at Olympia in Ancient Greece as part of a religious festival. They were one of four game festivals held in Ancient Greece: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympics. The Olympic Games were so important to the Ancient Greeks that wars were stopped while they were held.

for Olympic posters Ancient Olympic champions were highly revered. They received a crown made from olive leaves, were entitled to have statues made of themselves placed at Olympia, and were believed to bring their hometowns into favour with the Greek gods. It was also common for champions to have all their meals paid for at the public's expense or to get front-row seats at theatres.

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

    HISTORY OF BOXING
BOXING IS A FISTFIGHT KIND OF SPORTS, ALSO CALLED PUGILISM (LITERALLY FISTING FIGHT) AND PRIZEFIGHTING (IN OTHER WORDS, THE FIGHT FOR PRIZES/MONEY).
BOXING HAS BEEN INCLUDED INTO THE OLYMPIC GAMES PROGRAM SINCE 1904.
IT MIGHT BE THAT FOR HUNDREDS YEARS PEOPLE HAD USED THEIR FISTS JUST TO RESOLVE DISPUTES BEFORE SOMEONE THOUGHT ABOUT AN IDEA OF ORGANIZING SUCH FIGHTS FOR ENTERTAINMENT OF OTHERS.
    COMMON ERA
There is an evidence of the fact that boxing existed in about the year 1500 BC on the Crete Island. The modern researches allow to insist that such duels had been known much earlier in Africa, particularly in the region of modern Ethiopia. The hieroglyphic scriptures dated back to the year 4000 BC revealed the popularity of this kind of sports throughout the Nile Plateau and all over the Egypt, after the latter had conquered Ethiopia. The enhancement of the Egyptian civilization through the Mediterranean region and the Middle East caused spreading out of boxing. In the year 686 BC boxing was so improved that it was included into the Olympic games program. However that time it was roughly alike a boxing bout we know it today. All fights were carried out on open plots, where the spectators were the "alive arena borders". The fight normally lasted until one of the opponents was physically unable to continue fighting. Although the first boxers primarily fought for fame, the winner was granted the gold, livestock or other trophies

Savon, now 33 years old, capped what must be his final appearance in an Olympics by beating Russian Sultanahmed Ibzagimov to match the three heavyweight golds won by the mighty Stevenson between 1972 and 1980. They are the only boxers ever to twice defend their Olympic titles, although Hungarian Laszlo Papp won three golds in different divisions, and the only ones to strike genuine fear into opponents for a decade each. Many comparisons can be made between the two muscled giants, whose careers overlapped but briefly. Stevenson won the super-heavyweight gold medal in his international farewell at the 1986 world championships in Reno, Nevada, while 18-year-old Savon burst on to the scene there to take the heavyweight title.

FIFTY YEARS HAVE PASSED since Trinidad and Tobago began its Olympic journey. A half century since a team of three athletes travelled to the 1948 games in London with the aim of attaining glory for a small British colony. With the exception of 1960, the last five decades have seen this nation represented in 12 Olympiads with a total of 90 athletes in eight different disciplines: badminton, boxing, cycling, shooting, swimming, track and field, weightlifting and yachting. It wasn't until the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo that Trinidad and Tobago returned to the fold as an independent nation with a team of ten competitors. It was on the athletic track that the greatest prosperity was attained. Edwin Roberts, an outstanding collegian with the University of North Carolina, made it to the final of the 200m where he earned a bronze medal. The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich saw two important records being established. Trinidad and Tobago fielded its largest ever contingent of 20 athletes, among whom a female sprinter, Laura Pierre was included for the first time. Once again, the top performances came on the athletic track.
