posted Apr. 15, 1998 Sternberg, 80, is a Brazilian native and former chair of Geography of Brazil at the University of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, where he founded the Center for Research in the Geography of Brazil. He joined the Berkeley geography faculty in 1964 and became an emeritus professor in 1988. He has explored and studied the Amazon for half a century, writing about its physical geography, ecology and anthropology as well as its history and politics. His emphasis has always been on how human society affects the environment, such as the impact of improper use of soil, water, flora and fauna, or the concentration of resources in the hands of a few people. He has written and lectured worldwide on deforestation and other ecological problems in the Amazon, many of which he has documented with photographs.

Geography and Development Of Rio de Janeiro
Site And Situation
Rio de Janeiro is situated on one of the most unique sites in the world. Surrounded by picturesque mountains, coves, and beaches, it is modern city and home to over 11 million inhabitants. Rio is located just north of the Tropic of Capricorn along the Brazilian Atlantic coast. The te rrain is characterized by steep hills and mountains which are offshoots of the mountain range Sierra do Mar. These hills are granite based and lead inland to form the Brazilian Highlands. One of the most famous is the coastal mountain Sugar Loaf, which is the landmark most commonly associated with Rio. The original city was founded just inland from the coast on an inlet known as Guanabara Bay. This was thought to have been the mouth of a river, hence the name of Rio(meaning river) de Janeiro, given to the city.

the Brazilian Amazon May 9 - June 6, 2001 What's this program about? Top The objective of this study abroad program is to provide students with an opportunity to examine first hand the intersection of social and environmental change in the Brazilian Amazon. The program will combine field experience with lectures by Amazonian experts in-country and MSU faculty with intimate knowledge of the region. The program applies an interdisciplinary design with an emphasis on the historical, social, ecological, and geographical dimensions of development and change in Amazonia. Students will learn about the social processes influencing environmental change, and the geographic techniques currently used to investigate and monitor land cover patterns. Highlights of the program include: an eight day research excursion aboard an Amazonian river-ferry on the Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers, with several side trips down tributaries, through the flooded forests, and stops at small villages along the way to experience local culture including indigenous, caboclo, and campesino communities; camping under the rain forest canopy at the Smithsonian/INPA Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project field station; exploring the cascading waterfalls and caverns hidden beneath the vast Amazonian forest cover; a weekend retreat at one of Amazonia’s luxury jungle lodges, enabling students to study the inner-workings of eco-tourism; and tours of historic Manaus and the Free Trade Zone, with visits to several Amazonian research centers.

    The Amazon Basin: Geography
The two great Brazilian cities of the Amazon are Belém at the mouth and Manaus upstream at the confluence of the Rio Negro with the river Amazon. Belém is a long established town that was given city status in 1655. It is a trading city that grew rapidly during the rubber boom years and although rubber is no longer important it still is a trading centre for Amazonian products such as Brazil nuts and wood. It is also a centre for Amazonian studies and the Museo (museum) Paraense Emílio Goeldi should be visited by all those interested in the Amazonian flora and fauna.
The third most important Brazilian Amazonian town is Santarém, which is situated on the right bank of the Tapajós River, near its confluence with the Amazon River. It is another rapidly growing city but manages to retain more of the traditional feel of an Amazonian town.
The most important Peruvian city on the Amazon is Iquitos. This port is about 3,700 km from the Atlantic Ocean. The city grew rapidly during the rubber boom but then went into rapid recline from which it is yet to fully recover, although the population has recently increased rapidly.

The preparation of manioc flower is an involved process because the tuber when removed from the ground is poisonous because of the presence of prussic acid.
