city of natural beauty io de Janeiro's scenery is second to none and is a result of its unusual geographical setting. The sea and the mountains meet in a breathtaking display of nature which are ever-present in the day-to-day activities of an ever-growing city. This can be seen along the 90 km (50 miles) of beaches, green mountain slopes, lagoons, the only tropical forest to be situated within the boundaries of a city and, most importantly, in the happiness and pride of those that live there. he climate is hot and humid and the sun is always shining. The temperature varies between 28º and 42º Celsius in the summer, and in the winter the temperature rarely drops below 15º Celsius. Rainfall is very intense during the summer, usually occurring at the end of the day.

continental country ccupying 8,511,965 km2 (3,786,473 square miles) Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of area covered. It takes up a half of South America and its 27 states are distributed in 5 regions whose topography, vegetation, climate, fauna, inhabitants and habits are all very different. There are mountains, canyons, flat hilltops, valleys and plateaux which cover its territory, from the Amazon Rainforest to the Southern Pampas, passing through deserts, swamps, scrub land and forests. Such diversity permits a huge range of agricultural products to be cultivated, many of them European and Asian species in origin that are now perfectly adapted to the climate, producing more than one harvest a year. ince most of the country is situated at low-altitude between the tropics, the temperature is usually above 20° Celsius. The humidity of the air varies widely according to the region and its proximity to the sea. The climate in the South is colder and it even occasionally snows on some Winter days.

    GEOGRAPHY
Brazil, the fifth largest country in the world, contains 8.5 million square kilometers (approximately 3,281,000 square miles) of territory and occupies 47% of the South American land mass.
It is located between the 5º North and 32º South parallels, and hence is a predominantly tropical country only the far South can be described as having a temperate climate. Average temperatures fluctuate between 23º C and 29º C in the hottest months and between 17º C and 24º C in the cooler season.
Excluding the Amazon region, the geological formation of Brazil is extremely old. Extensive plateaux and average altitudes below 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) mean that most of the land is suitable for cultivation. Benefiting further from hydrographic basins which have large catchment areas and are partially navigable, Brazil is one of the countries in the world with the highest amounts of potable water per inhabitant.
    DEMOGRAPHY
With a population approaching 156 million inhabitants, Brazil is one of the six most populous countries in the world. In the last five years, average population growth has been 1.2% per year. The vast majority 71% of its people live in urban areas and São Paulo, with 15 million inhabitants, is far and away ahead of other population centers in sheer numbers of residents. In second place is Rio de Janeiro (9.8 million), followed by Belo Horizonte (3.4 million), Porto Alegre (3 million), Recife (2.8 million), and the Federal Capital of Brasilia (1.6 million).

HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY This section describes the changes that have taken place in the state structure of Brazil. Depending on where your ancestor lived, it may help to know about changes in the borders of Brazil. This information can help you to understand how records are listed in the Family History Library Catalog. The boundaries of Brazil have changed at various times. Brazil has been enlarged by various treaties from areas of French Guiana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. Important changes in the territory of Brazil include the following: The Treaty of San Ildefonso redrew the Portuguese-Spanish frontiers. The Portuguese were to withdraw from Uruguay (known as Cisplatina or Banda Oriental) in exchange for possession of Rio Grande do Sul. Uruguay gained independence from Brazil.

Paulo R. de Almeida Recently I became aware of the existence of a new wave of Internet rumors about American maps showing a divided Brazil, maps supposedly used in schools in the United States. On October 9, the "Discussão de História do Brasil" [Discussion of history of Brazil] mailing list—which apparently discloses each and every piece of news from its subscribers without questioning either the contents or the basis of the supposed "information"—gave wider readership to what is no more than the grossest disinformation. The mailing list, nevertheless, insisted in treating the "news" as if it were credible. To those who were not following the earlier wave of rumors (which circulated between May and June of this year), I would like to say immediately that such apparently alarming "news" has no basis I can, without hesitation, affirm that

05'20 S. According to the Demographic Census 2000IGBE (brazilian Institute of Geographyand Statistics) the population of the state is 10,187,798 inhabitants.
    http://www.semc.rs.gov.br/atlas/ENGgeo.htm
THE STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL Geography and Demography With a territorial area of 282, 062 km2 (3.30% of the Brazilian territory) and occupying the southern extreme of Brazil, the state of Rio Grande do Sul has boundaries with the State of Santa Catarina to the N-NE, the Argentine Republic to the W-NW, the Republic of Uruguay to the S-SW and is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean on its eastern edge. It is located between the longitudes 57°36'14"W - 49°42'00W and the latitudes 33°45'37"S - 27°05'20"S.
According to the Demographic Census 2000-IGBE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) the population of the state is 10,187,798 inhabitants. There was an increase of 11.4% in the decade from 1991 to 2000 (1.02% per year in recent years). In this period the urban population increased from 76.6% to 81.6%, while the rural population also diminished in absolute terms: of the 2.14 million rural inhabitants recorded in the census of 1991, 1.87 million remained in 2000. This represents not only the migration of rural population to the urban centers, a recurrent phenomenon throughout Brazil in recent decades, but also the migration of rural entrepreneurs and workers to the new important agricultural frontiers of the Midwest and North of Brazil, where there is a notable presence of Gaucho pioneers.
Around 28% of the population of Rio Grande do Sul is located in municipalities that form the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre - the main center of energy consumption in the State. Also notable are the large industrial centers of Caxias and Pelotas, cities with populations of over 300,000 inhabitants.
