Brazilian Postcolonial History History 386K Garfield Unique Number 35980 W 12-3 p.m. GAR 107 This course examines the history of Latin America's largest and most populous nation, shedding light on Brazil's political history, economic development, and cultural formation. The course looks at principal topics in postcolonial Brazilian history: Independence and Empire; slavery and post-emancipation society; rural oligarchies and export-led growth; regionalism vs. centralism; immigration, urbanization and industrialization; populism and trabalhismo; patriarchy; and bureaucratic-authoritarianism. The course explores the relationship between politics, socioeconomic change, and ideologies in postcolonial Brazil and the creative and contradictory ways in which Brazilians have faced and shaped the world around them. It aims to address the varied strategies of elite domination (repression, co-optation, patronage, social mythology) and forms of popular response (rebellion, day-to-day-resistance, accommodation, and collaboration) that have marked the history of modern Brazil. 5 November 2002

    http://www.terravista.pt/PortoSanto/1086/literature-br.html
B razilian Literature, writings in the Portuguese language produced by inhabitants of Brazil. Three ethnic groups have contributed to the shaping of this literature: the native Indians, the transplanted Europeans, and the blacks, who were brought from Africa as slaves. The resulting cultural mosaic was given unity by a common tongue. Throughout the centuries after Portugal began (1532) to colonize Brazil, the Portuguese language established the particular character of Brazilian literature and the intimate relationship of the literature with that of the mother country.
The history of Brazilian literature parallels that of other Latin American literatures; influenced by European thought and culture, it is readily divided into two periods, the colonial and the national.
    Colonial Period
th century, in sermons rich with rhetorical devices and polemical exaggeration. Contemporaneous tendencies in Spain and Portugal were reflected by the satirist Gregório de Mattos Guerra (1633-96); his work ranged from delicate lyricism to outright vulgarity.
By the second half of the 18 th century the literary hegemony passed from Bahia to the vigorous mining town of Minas Gerais. Of the several epics originating with this group, the outstanding was Uruguay (1769) by José Basílio da Gama (1740-95). This verse narrative deals with the war of Spain and Portugal against the Uruguayan missions. It depicts Indian life and customs with sympathy and even sentimentality. Friar José de Santa Ritta Durão (circa 1737-84) also belonged to the Minas Gerais school; his epic Caramurú (Sea Dragon) celebrated the discovery of Bahia. Although few masterpieces were written in the colonial period, the growth and economic betterment of the country permitted more Brazilians to turn to a career in letters.

    http://www.delanet.com/~luke/history.html
The Dicki-Waza Jiu-Jitsu club was formed by a group of guys who had experience in many different martial arts: Judo, Shorin-Ryu, Tae-Kwon Do, Kenpo, and Modern Arnis, among others. When no holds barred fighting came to the U.S., we realized that something was missing from our arsenals, quality grappling skills. John Houben started us off by teaching Judo positions, throws, holds, etc. We were eager for more knowledge and after working out with several different local instructors, we found Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Renzo Gracie. In the fall of `97 we started training with Renzo and his guys in Philadelphia. Renzo has since moved this school to New Jersey and we all tagged along. We're looking forward to many more great lessons in the future. Come roll with us in Delaware or meet up with us in New Jersey. You're welcome. Home Charter History Instructors ... Style

Esta é uma página bilíngüe. Clique aqui para ver a versão em Portuguese A group of scholars in Brazil, the United States, and England have embarked on a long-term project to survey the history of the concept of citizenship in Brazil. We are particularly interested in how ordinary Brazilians have understood their rights and responsibilities as citizens. We want to interview men and women from all walks of life, from all age and economic groups, and from all regions of Brazil.. We are looking for volunteers to help by doing interviews and sending the results to us . They may be in Portuguese or in English. Any interview must be accompanied by a written statement signed by the interviewee and giving permission to use the interview for educational purposes. The interviewee may give permission to use his or her name, or may wish to use a pseudonym or remain anonymous. In this case, no permission is needed. Volunteers will receive full acknowledgment for their work and will retain personal use of all materials they generate. They will become full collaborative members of the team. When the project is completed, two books will result: one in Portuguese for a Brazilian audience and one in English for a North American audience.
