Brazilian hopes victory accompanies history
June 29, 2002 YOKOHAMA, Japan Win or lose in Sunday's World Cup final, Cafu has assured his place in soccer history. When the opening whistle blows, Cafu will become the only player to appear in three consecutive finals. He also will have played in 16 World Cup games, more than any other Brazilian even Pele. "For me, this is the Cup of breaking records," the defender from the Italian team AS Roma said after practice Friday. "It's a personal conquest." Pele played on Cup champions in 1958, '62 and '70. But he spent much of his first Cup on the bench and missed most of the next one with an injury. Four years later, Brazil was knocked out in the first round. Pele left the national team after the '70 Cup and 14 games. The only other nation to reach three consecutive finals was West Germany/Germany, in 1982, '86 and '90. But no player was on all three teams.

Capoeira is a brazilian martial art developed by the slaves over 400 yrs. ago. Itcombines Martial Arts, Music, Dance, history, Portuguese, Culture, Tradition
http://www.capoeirasj.com/history/
@import "/stylesheets/general.css"; PREFACE THE BEGINNING In 1500's the Portuguese, led by explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral, arrived in Brazil. One of the first measures taken by the new arrivals was the subjugation of the local population, the Brazilian Indians, in order to furnish the Portuguese with slave labor (for sugarcane and cotton). The experience with the aborigines was a failure. The Indians quickly died in captivity or fled to their nearby homes. The Portuguese then began to import slave labor from Africa. On the other side of the Atlantic, free men and women were captured, loaded onto ghastly slave ships and sent on nightmarish voyages that for most would end in perpetual bondage. The Africans first arrived by the hundreds and later by the thousands (approximately four million in total).Three major African groups contributed in large numbers to the slave population in Brazil, the Sudanese group, composed largely of Yoruba and Dahomean peoples, the Mohammedanized Guinea-Sudanese groups of Malesian and Hausa peoples, and the "Bantu" groups (among them Kongos, Kimbundas, and Kasanjes) from Angola, Congo and Mozambique. THE FOREFATHERS Who or what is responsible for Capoeira? Where did the foundation of capoeira come from? That is the eternal question that can never really be answered. The Bantu groups are believed to have been the foundation for the birth of Capoeira. They brought with them, from Africa, their culture, a culture that was not stored away in books and museums but rather in the body, mind, heart and soul. A culture that was transmitted from father to son, throughout generations. There was candomble', a religion; the berimbau, a musical instrument; vatapa, a food; and so many other things. Basically a way of life.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The History
We also offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial arts, which is a Brazilian variant of the traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial arts.
Why is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a gentle martial arts sport? Because the emphasis of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is on non-violence, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tries to harness ki to create an environment filled with balance and equilibrium.
These martial arts sports of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu started in Japan, as far as martial arts historians now. However, the martial arts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could've been brought to Japan by another country as well no one can be certain for sure. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu started more than 2500 years ago, and was practiced by the Buddhist monks there.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu originated when Mitsuo Maeda, who was a master in the martial arts sports of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, migrated from Japan to Brazil in 1914. He sought refuge in exchange for teaching the current Brazilian political leader Gastao Gracie's son Carlos Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was then taught by Carlos to Carlos's brothers. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu further developed from there, and the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Aikido, judo, and karate are some of the more common martial arts studies that can be traced back to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

History
The Brazilian Immigrant Center/Centro do Imigrante Brasileiro (BIC) was established in March 1995 by a group of Brazilian immigrants and supporters, to organize the Brazilian immigrant worker community to ensure social and economic justice for low-income Brazilian workers in the Boston area. Several of the Center's founding members, formerly human rights activists in Brazil, saw the need for a resource center where the language of Boston's rapidly growing Brazilian community was spoken and solutions were promoted to widespread problems of workplace discrimination, unfair treatment, and harassment. The initial vision was to train and empower workers to collaborate to advance their own and each other's rights to justice in the workplace. Since its formation, the Center has been organized, staffed, and led by first generation Brazilian immigrant workers who are directly aware of the challenges faced by the immigrant community. The BIC is an example of the leadership capacity of Brazilian immigrants. Some staff and Board members bring experience in grassroots organizing and political mobilization from Brazil. For example, several were members of the Worker's Party in Brazil and participated directly in union organizing. Others have learned from their participation at the Center and have begun organizing efforts in Boston area workplaces.

The Gracie style of Jiu-Jitsu is the "hottest" item in the martial arts today. The Gracie style was created in the early 1900's by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer Helio Gracie, who had a standing challenge that was open to practitioners of all styles, regardless of size, weight or musculature. This tradition of open challenge has been continued by the Gracie family and their students for over 70 years. "The whole purpose of playing live is to blow people's heads off," says Manowar bassist Joey DeMaio. "That's what we do; that's the energy of this band. We're out there to kick ass, we're out there to turn our gear on and blast, we're out there to kill. That's what metal is. Anybody who says otherwise is not playing heavy metal. We will melt your face!" With the double live CD "Hell On Stage Live", Manowar's first album for Metal Blade, the band proves that the demise of metal has been greatly exaggerated. In fact it's alive and well and still and as devastating as ever. True to form, they are back with 16 tracks steeped in the august tradition of Deep Purple's Made In Japan, The Who's "Live at Leeds" and the Led Zep Classic, "The Song Remains The Same". Giving fans what they've been waiting for. In the beginning, Joey DeMaio was working as a bass/pyro tech for Black Sabbath. When Sabbath played a show at Newcastle City Hall in England, he hooked up with original Manowar guitarist Ross the Boss, who at the time was playing for Shakin Street, a Sabbath support band. As both shared an all-consuming love for in-your-face-metal, it was not long before they struck on the idea of Manowar. Later, having recruited the ultimate voice of heavy metal, Eric Adams (and drummer Donny Hamzik), Manowar recorded their debut album "Battle Hymns." It featured a bone chilling narration by legendary actor Orson Welles on the track "Dark Avenger."

A Brief History of the Brazilian Room
The Brazilian Room derives its name from its rich hardwood paneling. These walls were once part of the Golden Gate International Exposition's 'World's Fair' famed Brazilian Pavilion, displayed on Treasure Island in 1939.
When the exposition ended, the Brazilian Room was presented to the East Bay Regional Park District by the country of Brazil as a gift of friendship. Because the exterior of the building was perishable, the building was dismantled for transport to Tilden Regional Park. The Works Progress Administration built a new permanent exterior, combining local rock and timber with the beautiful walls, floors and fixtures from Brazil.
A Brief History of Kennedy Grove
Long before this 95-acre area became a park, it was the site of ranchos, wheat fields, and stations for a narrow-gauge railroad that ran from Oakland to Orinda through Richmond and the Sobrante Hills.
Kennedy Grove was once a portion of the 17,754-acre Rancho San Pablo. Francisco Castro took possession of the rancho in 1823. Later the grove was the site of the Clancy Ranch.
In 1886 there were scheduled railroad stops of the California Nevada Railroad at Frenchman's Curve and Laurel Grove Station. The park's picnic areas are named for some of these historic railroad stops. The eucalyptus trees were planted in 1910.

History of Brazilian Cinema
Within a year of the Lumière brothers' first experiment in Paris in 1896, the cinematograph machine appeared in Rio de Janeiro. Ten years later, the capital boasted 22 cinema houses and the first Brazilian feature film, The Stranglers by Antônio Leal, had been screened. From then on Brazil's film industry made steady progress and, although it has never been large, its output over the years has attracted international attention. In 1930, still the era of the silent movie in Brazil, Mario Peixoto's film Limit (Limite) was made. Limite is a surrealistic work dealing with the conflicts raised by the human condition and how life conspires to prevent total fulfillment. It is considered a landmark film in Brazilian cinema history. In 1933 Cinédia produced The Voice of Carnival, the first film with Carmen Miranda. This film ushered in the chanchada which dominated Brazilian cinema for many years. Chanchadas are slapstick comedies, generally filled with musical numbers, and thoroughly appreciated by the public. Working at the same time as the Tropicalists, another group of directors emerged in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro who also made low cost films. This movement - cinema marginal - produced films with themes that refer to a marginal society. Their films were considered "difficult". Noteworthy among these films are Rio Babylon (Rio Babilônia) by Neville d'Almeida, He Killed the Family and Went to the Movies (Matou a Família e foi ao Cimema) by Júlio Bressane, and The Red Light Bandit (O Bandido da Luz Vermelha) by Rogério Sganzerla.

In return for help from the Brazilian politician Gastao Gracie, Koma taught jiu-jitsu to Gastao's son Carlos. Carlos in turn taught his brothers (most notably Helio). 99. Great People In Brazilian Literature. Writers, Poets, Artists
Brief information on each of the major writers of Brazil and their contributions.
http://www.brazilbrazil.com/literary.html
HIGHLIGHTS OF BRAZILIAN LITERATURE
GREAT MAJOR FIGURES IN BRAZILIAN ART. I FEEL THEY REPRESENT WELL THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE LAST 500 YEARS.
Luis de Camoes
Any study of Brazilian art must begin with Luis de Camoes (1525 - 1580), Portugal's national poet. Born in Lisbon to an impoverished noble family, he joined a military expedition to the Orient to seek fame and fortune, but returned penniless. While in Macau, off the coast of China, in a cave, he wrote the Lusiadas , the great Portuguese national epic (Kind of like Shakespeare writing his plays in a hut in Afghanistan). The development of all subsequent Portuguese (and Brazilian) literature can be traced to this work. Camoes totally dominates all poetic currents of his time. He also wrote beautifully structured sonnets and lyric poems. Camoes died in poverty and obscurity. A giant of his era, he has influenced writers in many languages, including the great English poets of the Elizabethan era (Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese : "How do I love thee, let me count the ways").
