31. Breast Cancer, Breast Feeding And Tobacco Smoke
Early studies treated secondhand smokers as if they were nonsmokers, which actually masked the evidence; later studies separated out the two, and found that both active and passive smoking are causes of breast cancer.

Breast cancer, breast feeding and tobacco smoke
Phillip Whidden That lung cancer is a fatal result of passive smoking , is well known. Heart disease caused by environmental tobacco smoke causes about 10 times as many deaths in second-hand smokers as the lung-cancer deaths brought on by inhaling other people's tobacco smoke.
However, I shall present evidence today that tobacco-smoke pollution is much more powerful in causing breast cancer in women than in causing either lung cancer or heart disease. I shall also show why this evidence about breast cancer is very important for babies and children.
But before I do that, I want to raise a point about how difficult it is to get journalists to pay attention to what is important in scientific research instead of paying attention to unimportant scientific reports. I will do this by marking a very bad anniversary. Last year, almost exactly a year ago today, on May 20, scientists reported that they had found evidence that active smoking reduces the risk of breast cancer in women who carry the mutant genes BRCA1 or BRAC2. That was a Wednesday. The media in Europe and North America shouted this message to the world: SMOKING MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER. That same week, however, news releases telling the truth had been coordinated to be sent out in both Europe and North America for journalists to report on the Monday, two days earlier. Not a single television, radio, newpaper or magazine report told the public on that Monday that both active and passive smoking lead to a very large increased risk of breast cancer. Instead, all the reports were disgracefully about the Wednesday publication of the scientific report on BRCA1 and BRAC2 genes and the supposed reduction in risk of breast cancer due to smoking.

Use Of Smokeless Tobacco May Lead To Breast Cancer, Wake Forest Team Reports
Preliminary results suggest that using smokeless tobacco may dramatically increase the risk of breast cancer, Wake Forest University School of Medicine researchers reported today. John G. Spangler, M.D., M.P.H., told the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, meeting in Orlando, "These preliminary data are the first to document an apparent relationship between smokeless tobacco use and breast cancer." The study, paid for by the National Cancer Institute, was conducted among Eastern Band Cherokee women 18 and older who live on tribal lands in Western North Carolina and use smokeless tobacco, also called snuff. The investigators found that the risk of breast cancer increased almost eightfold. The increase "suggests that smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking," said Spangler, assistant professor of family and community medicine.

What is Inflammatory Breast Cancer?
Information about IBC is also available in Magyarul and Deutsch Inflammatory Breast Cancer ( IBC) is a relatively rare form of breast cancer (about 1-4%), and symptoms usually include the following:
  • A warm swollen breast that does not change through the menstrual cycle or respond to antibiotics
  • Skin which is red or appears dimpled like an orange (peau d'orange)
Other possible signs of IBC include:
  • The sudden appearance of a large lump in the breast
  • Itching or pain in the breast
  • A nipple which is flattened or inverted, possibly with a discharge
  • Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or above the collarbone
These symptoms often appear with IBC because the cancer is fast-growing and blocks the lymph vessels in the breast and skin. All of the listed symptoms may also be present with benign breast disorders. Different women have different symptoms, and although IBC is normally associated with infiltration of the skin lymphatic system, in some cases there may be no visible skin changes.

Have you been diagnosed with breast cancer? Are you scheduled for surgery? Be sure to discuss with your surgeon or oncology nurse your post surgical needs and follow up care. Inquire whether or not your surgeon will use surgical drains. Many doctors, but not all, do. Whether you have drains or not, you can expect to find your regular clothing uncomfortable, especially in the underarm area. You will need loose fitting garments that open in the front and are made of soft, non-irritating fabrics. If you are going to leave the hospital with drains, these will be taped to your torso or pinned inside your clothing. You will be shown how to empty the receptacles and measure the fluid. Although not painful, the drains are awkward and uncomfortable. No one can tell you how long they will be in place. Based on our survey of breast cancer survivors, the average time is two weeks. 40. Walk The Walk - Uniting Against Breast Cancer
A team of women and men that power walk marathons to raise money for Breakthrough breast cancer and the Bristol Cancer Help Centre. Includes information about events, charities, donations, and links.
http://www.walkthewalk.org/
Walk the Walk is an ever growing team of women and men that power-walk marathons in bras to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the Bristol Cancer Help Centre, and to encourage all women and men to get fitter and to take charge of their own health and well-being In less than four years, Nina Barough, ex international fashion stylist, has turned a simple but brave idea, of power walking marathons in her bra, into a national charity that has raised over £1m for the fight against breast cancer. Not only that, the charity, Walk the Walk, now has its very own power walking marathon in London, the only one it's kind in the world.
2001 saw the 4th Moonwalk (2nd Playtex Moonwalk) take place at midnight, on May 12th.
What makes this story so incredible, is that during this period of time, Nina has also had to overcome breast cancer herself.
In 1996, Nina travelled the world as a highly successful stylist and had never even considered taking part in an endurance marathon to raise money for charity. She had, however, felt an increasing desire to give something back and wanted to do something a little more worthwhile.
Nina had an idea. People from the fashion industry would power walk a marathon, clad in customised Wonderbras, all in aid of breast cancer research. In 1996, twelve people joined her for the New York Marathon and it was a huge success. Nina then began to get an increasing number of calls from others that wanted to join her team and enter the London Marathon the following year.
