Different parrot species have different requirements Pet Bird Magazine, Ezine August 1997 Magazine Topic IV - Avian Nutrition AVIAN NUTRITION by PJ Schimel of HEX Aviary Proper and adequate avian nutrition combined with good husbandry is probably the single most important factor in insuring that your pet bird lives a long and healthy life. The good husbandry aspect is very straightforward; supply your companion with a roomy, clean environment with full spectrum lighting, plenty of toys, quality time with you, regular veterinary care and most important of all plenty of mental and physical stimulation. The proper and adequate nutrition aspect is more complicated and complex. A sound nutritional program for all psittascine species, (with the possible exception of the hyacinth macaw who lives almost exclusively on nuts in the wild), should include fresh clean water, washed vegetables and fruit, grains, legumes, sprouts, beans, nuts, pellets, people food, and limited amounts of seed. The basic nutritional parrot's diet is similar to a human's macrobiotic or health food diet. However, all species are not the same and some have special dietary requirements. WATER Fresh water should be given at least twice daily. I recommend that you boil all water to be given to your birds. Fill a clean freshly washed gallon container with boiled water and place in the refrigerator for future use. This is the simplest way to provide safe drinking and bathing water for your birds. A container will probably last almost a week. Many people always ask, "Can I give my bird bottled or spring water?" I always say "no"! Spring water comes from a stream and is untreated, there is no guarantee that it doesn't contain some harmful bacteria. I realize that this thought is uncomfortable to some people, but there is a good possibility of this happening. Why take the chance?

It has been used since by a number of organisations for the evaluation of breeding bird data for habitat management. The information set up for this programme has been used for different models on landscape planning. Two examples are the nation-wide population model LARCH and the impact-assessment model NICHE. In LARCH breeding bird density data is combined with parameters of almost 200 different habitat types stored in a 250x250 m ARC-INFO gridmap of habitat types of the Netherlands. The model estimates the size of local populations to predict the influence of landscape planning on the viability of these populations. NICHE is designed to predict local vegetation using ARC-INFO. It is based on a small number of parameters like soil, water tables and land use. By adding a number of parameters on breeding birds, e.g. preference for different vegetation types and minimum habitat area the presence of ecological species groups is predicted. The model can be used to determine for instance the effect of drainage or infiltration on breeding birds.

LITTLE GREBE (Tachybaptus ruficollis) Though not proven every year this species is probably a regular beeder on the Burness Loch. Recently, in April most years there are sightings of adults on the loch. This is before the emergent vegetation grows and obscures the fringes of the water body and provides seclusion for this very shy bird. On 31st August 1996, six were seen here and this could well represent family parties of the year. In 1999, two pairs were recorded breeding on the Burness Loch and one pair at Swartmill Loch. Probably less than 20 pairs of this secretive water bird breed in Orkney FULMAR (Fulmarus glacialis) Local name: Maaliemac Birds are present in and around the breeding areas for most of the year but numbers often dip in late autumn. Most of its breeding habitat is protected in the Christmas Island National Park. Park authorities have a rainforest rehabilitation programme funded by the mining royalties from Christmas Island Phosphates. Thisproject revegetates areas where nesting areas have been affected by the wind turbulence resulting from land clearing.
