Greek Architecture
The earliest buildings that were built in Greece , in the New Stone Age , are small houses or huts , and wooden walls around them for protection. Later there are bigger houses, and stone walls around the villages. By the Early Bronze Age , we find one bigger house in the middle of the village, and fancier, bigger stone walls. In the Late Bronze Age , under the influence of Western Asia , and the Minoans on Crete, there are palaces and big stone tombs , as well as paved roads and bridges, and dams (and more stone walls). During the Greek Dark Ages the palaces were burned, and the roads and bridges and dams mostly fell apart. But at the end of the Dark Ages, with the beginning of the Iron Age and the Archaic period in Greece, we see a new type of building: the temple for the gods . There are houses, but no more palaces. But roads and bridges and stone walls begin to be built again. In the Classical period , there are more temples , bigger and with new design ideas: the Parthenon is built in the 440's BC Democracy prevents the Greeks from building palaces or big tombs, because politically all men are supposed to be equal, and so it would look bad to have a big palace even if you could afford it. Instead, the Greeks build public buildings:

Ben Van Berkel - UN Studio
Ben Van Berkel
Ben Van Berkel is one of the most interesting young dutchman architects. Along with Caroline Bos he founded the UN Studio Group and, at only 45 years old, he planned houses, museums, power stations, bridges and design's objects.
You founded UN Studio together with Caroline Bos. How do you combine your different background -architecture and history of art- in the design process?
We have been working for ten years together, and we have always believed that history of art and history of architecture don't have to be so separated. So we have always a dialog about what architecture could do today.
I design and Caroline writes more than I do, we try to sharpen up each other's work. So maybe when I write notes, Caroline knows how to refine them, or when she writes her stories I discuss it with her...
I mean, she's also part of the full design process. She's sometimes very critical and guides the total concept of the project; she makes it more inclusive of the way we work on our projects.

Places: A landmark himself, Kidney remains devoted to city's architecture Wednesday, February 27, 2002 By Patricia Lowry, Post-Gazette architecture critic You have to envy Walter Kidney's commute. "You sort of miss things like trees and so on because you're above them," he said in his down-to-earth office at One Station Square, stacked with plat books dating to 1889 showing how Pittsburgh evolved from farmland to dense neighborhoods. "But it's a very nice outlook and a real surprise up there. You realize how the relationship of things to one another spatially is so different. You find that things are a few degrees off from where you think they ought to be." Kidney, who moved to his perch on Grandview last fall, has lived on Mount Washington since 1978, when he took up permanent residence here after moving in and out of the city most of his life. Late last month, when he celebrated his 70th birthday over lunch with a group of friends and colleagues at the Grand Concourse, Kidney officially became a Pittsburgh historic landmark so proclaimed the citation presented to him by PHLF's executive director, Louise Sturgess. Over more than 20 years, Kidney has written five books about Pittsburgh buildings, rivers and bridges, but the road to honorary landmark status was anything but direct.

I s f a h a n T he unique blue tiles of Isfahan's Islamic buildings, and the city's majestic bridges, contrast perfectly with the hot, dry Iranian countryside around it, Isfahan is a sight you won't forget. Not only is the architecture superb and the climate pleasant, but there's a fairly relaxed atmosphere here, compared with many other Iranian towns. It's a city for walking, getting lost in the bazaar, walking in beautiful gardens and meeting people.
Isfahan is about 400km (250ml) south of Tehran. Several flights make the trip daily. There are buses, usually overnight, to Tehran, Shiraz and other domestic cities. The express train between Isfahan and Tehran might be a preferable alternative to sitting all night on the seat.
