Benton County History The first white settlers in Benton County were probably Thomas Reeves and Daniel McKissick, who erected cabins where they lived during the winter of 1845-46. Benton County was officially created by an act of the Territorial Legislature on December 23, 1847. The county was created out of an area which was originally inhabited by the Kalapuya Indians, and named after Thomas H. Benton of Missouri, an advocate of development of the Oregon Territory. Benton County as it is constituted today has 668 square miles of land area. Corvallis Early settlers were Haman C. Lewis, who erected a cabin a few miles north of Corvallis in the spring of 1846; J.C. Avery, who took claim on what is now the south side of Corvallis in 1845 and built the first home on the present city limits in June of 1846; William F. Dixon, who took a claim on what is now the north part of the city in the spring of 1846; and Wyman St. Clair, who took a claim in the Philomath area and is generally believed to be the person responsible for naming Mary's River, Mary's Peak, and giving Corvallis its original name of Marysville. Land for the city was tendered by Avery and Dixon in the winter of 1847. In 1850, Avery erected the first real store in the city, and a hotel was built in 1850. The first school building was built in 1848, but not used until 1850 when A. G. Hovey became the first teacher. Avery operated a canoe ferry across the Mary's River, and Dixon operated a small ferry across the Willamette River as early as 1848. By 1850, a regular ferry was in operation across the Willamette and by 1851, the town had two or three stores, a combined store/ saloon, a hotel, two blacksmith shops, a school and several homes. It was in 1851 that the southern city limits were established and Marysville named as the official county seat.

ODOT CULTURAL RESOURCES FAQ Why we are here? What do we do? The ODOT Cultural Resources staff identifies and evaluates historic resources along highway projects to determine potential eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. We examine the proposed project effects on those resources, and work with designers to evaluate possible alternatives which would avoid or minimize effects to the historic properties. We advise and coordinate with project teams on cultural resource issues, and when project effects cannot be avoided, we prepare requests for Determination of Eligibility (DOE), Cultural Reports, Section 106 Finding of Effect reports, Section 4(f) documents, and Memoranda of Agreement (MOA). We coordinate directly with the two regulatory agencies, the State Historic Preservation Office and FHWA. The cultural staff also reviews all findings, recommendations, and documents prepared by consultant forces prior to distribution to the regulatory agencies. History of Covered Bridges Why were bridges covered? Another positive reason why bridges were covered was that the roof strengthened the entire structure. "In Washington,…the cross-bracing of a roof…saved many a bridge from the strong northerly winds. Even so, a covered bridge [was] built like a giant wooden box kite. A 200-foot span…[would take] punches from a windstorm equal to a lateral thrust of 100 tons. At other times, weakening [was] inevitable from the constant and almost imperceptible pressure of the wind" (Adams, 27). These were the determining factors on whether or not a bridge would be covered. With advances in technology, bridges today are covered only for the reason of attracting tourists and paying sightseers. History of Covered Bridges The increase interest in the building of bridges attracted many carpenters and architects. "The most active and prominent of the Oregon bridge builders from 1973 to 1885 was the firm of A.S. Miller and Sons." (Nelson, 14). The reason for his success was that he "purchased a contractor’s franchise for exclusive rights to use the Smith truss in either Oregon or the Washington Territory" (Nelson, 15). The Smith truss was a much better and longer-lasting form of building compared to the other methods used. "Among the most important contributions of A.S. Miller & Sons to bridge building in Oregon was the person of Lord Nelson Roney, who in 1875 started his career as a bridge carpenter for that firm. After Roney’s experience with the Millers, he turned professional bridge builder, his opportunity being afforded by the 1881 flood which washed out more than the usual number of spans. ‘Nels’ Roney was probably the most productive covered bridge builder in Oregon’s history, and continued as such until the middle 1920’s, devoting fifty years of his life to the business. Even at the time of his death in 1944, several of his covered bridges stood as evidence of his conservative approach to bridge construction, and the last of many signs bearing the inscription, ‘Built by L.N. Roney,’ was not torn down until 1953" (Nelson, 33).

Abraham Union High School's Applied Architecture II Class Studies Covered Bridges Paul Stetson, Instructor The Assignment- Working in groups of three, build a 1:24 scale model of a covered bridge in our area. Kate Pellegrini, Applied Architecture II - Shelburne Museum Bridge - The bridge project was very interesting and integrated building the bridge in the woodshop with finding mathematical formulae, drawing and constructing a "to-scale" model. The process began back in September with a 'Vermont Covered Bridges" field trip. Shelburne Museum Bridge's top section (on side) Back in September, the class visited five Vermont covered bridges. Our job was to learn about each bridge by taking measurements of each covered bridge. We visited the Quinlan, Sequin, Charlotte, Shelburne Museum and the Lake Shore bridge. We found a lot of similarities and differences between the bridge's sizes, constructions, trusses, arches and materials used. Each group of two or three people blindly picked a bridge. We picked the Shelburne Museum bridge. When we returned to school, the project was continued by deriving a formula of 1':2". Every measured chord and beam was adjusted to scale and those were the measurements that we would use for the building of the bridge.

The total number of covered bridges built in West Virginia is unknown. There were still more than 54 remaining in the 1950's. By 1979 only 19 remained. Today, there are 17. Some, such as the Staats Mill Barrackville and the newly renovated Milton/Mud River are in excellent condition, while others are in need of repairs and some even total restoration. All 17 remaining covered bridges in West Virginia were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, following research done by Dr. Emory Kemp of Morgantown. Public awareness concerning the fate of covered bridges increased in 1989, when the popular, Philippi bridge was nearly destroyed by fire. The bridge was totally reconstructed in 1991, giving it back its original look. Due to Dr. Kemp's hard work to promote the idea of bridge protection and restoration, and due to his recently established " Institute for the History of Technology and Industrial Archaeology" in Morgantown, the future of the 17 remaining bridges is in good hands. Home Weather China World ... China Tours Museum of Ancient Bridges Taishun County is situated in southwest Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. It boasts a zigzagging mountain range dotted with little streams and small valleys. Thousands of years of rich Chinese culture have contributed to the extraordinary attraction of this peaceful county, where visitors can appreciate more than 900 covered bridges. Upon entering the village, the first sight to hit your eyes is Dongxi Bridge. The corridor of this bridge looks like a crimson palace with four flying eaves engraved at each end. The bridge, built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), has endured 400 years of weather beating, and continues to stand firmly with a longlasting elegance, although some broken prints can be detected. In the pre-dawn hours, the silhouette of the bridge appears to be a rainbow rising from outer space. Not far away, visitors find another covered bridge of similar structure and style - Beijian Bridge. The main structure of this bridge has 15 small covered rooms, which combine to form a long alley. Locals called these two bridges "sister bridges". These two sisters are regarded as the most beautiful rainbow bridges in China, maybe even the world. Beijian Bridge is a glamorous site. The clear creeks and simple, plain Ming Dynasty-styled houses combine perfectly into a natural, integrated scene.
