Wooden covered bridges are among the United States’ most treasured engineering landmarks. They are romantic symbols of the past and a link with our engineering forefathers and they revive memories from our heritage, a heritage that will never be replaced once it is gone.” But Why Covered? The roof and weatherboarding was not for the protection of travelers, or their horses, the loads of hay, or the sweethearts strolling in the fragrant shadows. Nor was it to protect the plank roadway of the bridges, they were readily replaceable. Covering was not to keep the snow off. Roofs were put on the covered bridges to keep the main structural timbers dry. Staunch as they appeared, they would quickly rot if left exposed to be alternately wet by rains and dampness and then scorched by the sun. Jackson County’s Covered Bridges The Bell’s Ford Covered Bridge The Medora Covered Bridge Built in 1875 and by-passed in 1972, the Medora Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in the United States, measuring 458 feet long including 12’ overhangs. A BEAUTIFUL PLACE Hi, I'm Larry Matthews. Welcome to this web site about a mountain that means a lot to me! Since 1963 I have lived within 30 miles of Table Mountain in Butte County, California. For 20 of those years I lived within its shadow. It is a wonderful mountain and is a very unique mesa. It's located just north-east of Oroville, California which is 75 miles north of Sacramento. For the majority of the year it is green and full of wonderful wildflowers. However it only takes a month of 90+ weather to reduce the color to yellow-brown. During the summer the heat exceeds the 100 degree mark and the mountain then looks barren. I have hiked the mountain innumerable times since 1963. It is wonderful to explore the green, tree lined mesas that extend themselves north-eastward toward the Sierra Nevadas. Even those who have lived here all of their lives don't realize that the mountain is in three pieces. The southern table is the most obvious: the one with the concrete "O" on it that faces Oroville. If one hikes the first table he or she will see that on the northern end the mountain drops off into a valley and immediately comes back up to the butte (the smallest part of the mountain). Those who drive up Cherokee road do not usually realize that this drop exists and think that all three of the parts of the mountain are connected. Actually there are two very distinct valleys between all three parts.

Welcome to the Covered Bridges page, presented by Environmental Services, Oregon Department of Transportation. Oregon has the largest collection of covered bridges in the western part of the United States, with over 50 extant covered spans. Because of the easy availability of forest resources in Oregon, most of the early bridges in the state were timber structures. These timber bridges were often covered to protect them from the weather. Now, the remaining examples of this obsolete bridge construction technology, generally located in pastoral rural settings, provide one of the most significant tourist attractions in the state. The bridge shown above is the Jordan Covered Bridge (1937), now lost. NEW!! ODOT's Bridge Section has recently completed a survey of Oregon's Covered Bridges, and has prepared a new website which includes information, photos, and maps to each of the covered bridges in the state. Wernwag, Palmer and the Earliest Pennsylvania Covered Bridges The Permanent Bridge Wernwag's Bridge at Upper Ferry Wernwag was an engineer and inventor who had already built bridges over Neshaminy Creek and Frankford Creek. The Frankford Creek "Economy" bridge was a drawbridge, on the following plan: Wernwag's Swing-Bridge Plan The Upper Ferry site probably was not too far from the modern Spring Garden Bridge, connecting the area then known as Fairmount with the western bank. As shown in the figure "Wernwag's Bridge at Upper Ferry," above, Wernwag's new bridge was a single arched span of 340 feet 3 3/4 inches. This made it the second-longest single-span bridge in the world, according to some authorities. Here is Wernwag's plan for the bridge: Wernwag's plan for the Schuylkill Bridge The Upper Ferry bridge was built in 1812, to be destroyed by fire in 1838. It was a considerable sensation, considered a new "wonder of the world," and came to be known as "The Colossus at Philadelphia" or "The Colossus at Fairmount." Because of the interest in it, a number of images of it come down to us in old prints from the time. Here is a curious one: The Water Works With the Wernwag Bridge in the Background The subject matter of this print is the Water Works, not really the bridge, but no matter Wernwag had designed the Water Works, which were built in the early 1820's. These tunnels into yesteryear recall the days when town selectmen would specify that a bridge be built"a load of hay high and wide" and when the resulting barn like structure would become, by turns, a kiosk for advertisements, a clubhouse for the neighborhood children, and an excuse for courting couples to steal a kiss while out on a drive. WOODEN BRIDGES Wood is the world's oldest bridge building material and, in Finland, bridges have always been constructed of wood. However, in the 1970s and 80s the percentages of bridges built with wood declined sharply, with concrete being the industry material of choice. The Vihantasalmi Bridge is the world's first wooden highway bridge. The bridge foundatation can consist of a simple glued laminated timber slab For the last ten years, developments in lamination techniques and new structural solutions have taken a turn in the opposite direction, with the percentage of bridges built using wood rapidly increasing. Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering Staffs Department Page The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering was formed in 1996 from the union of the former Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering and part of the Department of Materials. The aim of the reorganized department is to educate and conduct research in fields related to construction, the environment, and disaster prevention ranging from the scale of individual buildings to the global society. Major topics covered include: Design and construction of comfortable and esthetically pleasing buildings and attractive urban areas, Design, construction, and management of safe and efficient public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, harbors, and airports, and Utilization and preservation of water and soil in urban environments in harmony with natural ecosystems in a manner resistant to disasters. The number of students entering the department annually is fixed at 160 and there are more than 60 teaching faculty and staff. All faculty in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering belong to one of six chairs. Fourth year (senior level) students are also assigned to one of these chairs wherein they study current topics of interest for their graduate thesis. These chairs are described below.
