    • Next Meeting Wednesday, 12 March 2003 8:00 P.M. H.R. MacMillan Space Centre Auditorium (Planetarium) 1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver FREE ADMISSION Speaker: Brian Hayden The Role of Feasting in Social Complexity Feasting is generally dismissed by serious social scientists as self-gratifying behavior. Yet, recent studies demonstrate that it is instrumental in structuring sociopolitical relationships in traditional societies. Hence it also appears to play a key role in creating social complexity. Feasting has even been described as an institution comparable to parliament or congress. I discuss why this should be so and explore the surprising diversity of feasts in traditional societies. The types of feasts that may have had major consequences for cultural developments in the past really only begin to appear about 25,000 years ago and of course were highly developed on the Northwest Coast. Some of these consequences are examined, and it is proposed that feasting was responsible for a revolutionary new type of ecological paradigm in the natural world. The result forever changed the evolutionary trajectory of the human species.

THE EVAPORATION FROM cities Researcher Dr. Tim Oke. Nature and Purpose. IdealizedBalances of Heat (top), and Water (bottom) in cities.
    http://www.geog.ubc.ca/research/oke1.html
THE EVAPORATION FROM CITIES Researcher: Dr. Tim Oke Nature and Purpose The availability of surface water for evaporation is probably the single most significant determinant of the surface climate of cities. Further, since this can be manipulated by the type and distribution of vegetation and the provision of external irrigation, it represents a most flexible and powerful tool in the ecological design of cities. Our group, in collaboration with that of Dr. Sue Grimmond at Indiana University, is undertaking a multi-pronged study of the hydroclimates of cities. The work includes direct field measurement and both computer and scale modelling of the exchanges of water between the surface of cities and the air above. Idealized Balances of Heat (top), and Water (bottom) in Cities Not long ago, in the absence of observations, meteorologists assumed that cities were virtual deserts, from which very little evaporation took place. The general thinking, not unreasonably, was that the removal of vegetation and the sealing over of large areas by buildings, roads and parking lots would choke off the supply of water for evaporation.A general rule-of-thumb held that cities would use only about 20% of their available energy for evaporation, the remaining 80% being used to heat the air. Since this was to be compared with rural sites where evaporation typically used about 67% of the energy, urban-rural water balance differences were assumed to be large. Considerable interest centres on the cooling effectiveness of different types of vegetated parks. We have undertaken work on evaporation rates from parks in Vancouver and Sacramento and monitored the magnitude and extent of cooling on air temperature. The study also used a scale model of park cooling to simulate the effects of parks of different size and vegetative structure.

THE RUGOSITY OF cities Researcher Dr. Tim Oke. Nature and Purpose. cities presentan amazingly crenullated interface between the surface and the atmosphere.
    http://www.geog.ubc.ca/research/oke2.html
THE RUGOSITY OF CITIES Researcher: Dr. Tim Oke Nature and Purpose Cities present an amazingly crenullated interface between the surface and the atmosphere. Downtown Vancouver, BC Buildings, the primary structural elements of cities, are sharp-edged, inflexible, impermeable, hollow structures often made of manufactured materials such as concrete, glass, steel, etc. This complex three-dimensional array of up-standing objects, which are often very different in size, height and makeup, creates a relatively extreme surface boundary for the air above. One which generates greatly enhanced drag and turbulence for the wind, shade patterns and multiple reflection for sunshine, and horizon screening for heat radiated away. This intrinsic three-dimensionality has a lot to do with the nature and variability of urban climates, and presents several thorny methodological questions. We are interested in both. In particular we conduct studies on: s aerodynamic roughness – we have measured urban roughness properties using fast and slow response wind sensors mounted on towers in several cities. The results are notoriously variable and open to considerable error. We have also tested alternative methods involving inference of roughness from description of urban morphometry using detailed surveys of surface form and geographic information systems. s turbulence – fast response instruments mounted on towers above roof-level have been used to measure the minute fluctuations of temperature, humidity and the vertical, along-wind and across-wind velocity. Analysis of the variances and co-variances of these signals, and their spectral and integral statistics reveals the nature of atmospheric turbulence over cities and the exchange processes linking the nature of the surface to its urban climates.
