PUBLIC RELATIONS GROUP Procedure for publishing on the University web site
    Steps to take Step 1

It is the responsibility of Deans, Directors or Heads of Service to ensure that material submitted for publication on the web or intranet complies with approved University guidelines. All web authors should submit work to their Head of Department or line manager for approval of content. Step 2
The appropriate authors within each department will then publish approved content. Once material has been submitted for publication, authors should notify the Web Editor for inclusion on the 'What's New' links page. Step 3
The Web Editor publishes and updates a 'What's New' page on the web in order to help attract and direct traffic to your site. Notify the Web Editor of new pages or substantial updates to existing pages whenever you produce fresh or updated material. This is the most effective method of letting your web visitors see what has changed since they last visited the University site. It keeps the site fresh and gives direct links to the most up-to-date information from all parts of the University. The Web Editor will maintain "What's New" pages for both internal and external pages.

Creating a Website: 1. Introduction to Web Publishing Learning Objectives The aim of this section is to introduce you to the process of publishing on the World-Wide Web. By the end of this section you will:
  • know what Web publishing is
  • know what HTML is, and how it is used to create hypertext documents
  • know where to find HTML technical specifications
  • understand the Web publishing process
  • know how Web servers are involved in Web publishing
  • know what the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is used for
  • be able to view the HTML used to create any Web page Contents

    Why Learn HTML?
Knowing how to read HTML enables you to:
    • Have more control over the layout and functionality of your pages
    • View a page source for interesting attributes of other web pages
    • Reduce the problems associated with proprietary browser tags
    • Reduce the learning curve for more sophisticated HTML editors
    • Troubleshoot tables, lists and general formatting issues
    • Keep your pages "clean" - resulting in more efficient use of server space since the only code on your page should be code that you have put on the page yourself
How do I begin? Creating pages for the World Wide Web (WWW) is a two step process:
  • Create the pages on your computer
  • Upload these pages to the server so that everyone else can see them
    Step 1: Creating Your Pages
Tools of the trade: Here are a few basic tools you may find handy for designing web pages:
    • A program to write the code in: such as a simple text editor like Notepad (Windows), pico or Emacs (UNIX) or SimpleText (Macintosh)
    • HTML editor: a more sophisticated program such as HomeSite, Dreamweaver, FrontPage etc. for page maintenance and editing

    REPORT ONE
    The Concept of Web Publishing
The Difference Between Print and Web Publishing
As the world wide web came into existence, Web publishing was developed. This invention has made print publishing practically obsolete. Clearly, Web publishing has many more advantages over print publishing. The first and most apparent advantage is te ability to display timely and updated information. Web publishing allows one to update information in a matter of seconds. Other forms of non-Web publishing (books, magazines, CD-ROM's), take much time to manufacture, ship and deliver to the customer. Updating print publishing requires the same tedious process. By the time a print publishing reaches a customer, the information could be by far outdated.
Another obvious advantage of Web-publishing is the nature upon which it is distributed. Through the Internet, Web-publishing is available throughout the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and to an unlimited amount of consumers. Print publishing may be limited to a few copies per bookstores, or may be found in select libraries.
In addition, Web publishing offer interactive capabilities. This allows one to link to pages that are related to the topic. An example of this interactive capability are

In planning its own Web site, CAST researchers wrestled with the idea of how to make the entire Web more universally designed, i.e., more accessible and useful to all people, including those with disabilities. CAST examined existing Web accessibility guidelines, recognized the improbability of Web developers sitting down and reading a handbook of guidelines, and wanted to create an online tool Web designers could use to easily implement those guidelines."

    HTML - a little history
HTML is a language designed to code the structure of your text documents. Over the years, browser manufacturers have added propriety tags (some of which became standards) to control the appearance of documents. And designers, on their side, quickly discovered they could use a "hacks" and "workarounds" to force HTML pages into a (more or less) rigid layout. While this could be seen as a good thing, it quickly created a real mess: different browsers would support different tags, and a page written with a certain "look" in mind for one browser would come up broken in the other. This brings the need for people to agree on what is and is not HTML... enter standards.
    Need for standards
Standards are necessary to ensure that your page will look the same in every browser. HTML is a language, and as a language it has a syntax and a grammar. Browsers follow these rules to "decode" it and render it. But if nobody agrees on what the rules are, pages will look different in different browsers. Hence standards.

    General Overview of Web Publishing
Steps to Publishing on the World Wide Web
In order to publish information on the WWW, you will need to:
  • Make a plan for organizing the information you wish to present on the World Wide Web.
  • Information on the World Wide Web is organized into documents, know as pages . Since it will frequently be the case that you have more information than will reasonably be presented as a single page, you need to decide how to divide information into logical pages and then link those pages together into a web site . You should have a better idea of how to do this at the end of this course.
  • Get permission to store your completed documents on a WWW server computer.
  • The files that contain your web site must be stored on a WWW server which is continuously available to receive requests from WWW browsers. The central University of Victoria computer (unix.uvic.ca) acts as a WWW server and can be used to store both personal and departmental web documents. Procedures and policies for setting up a web site on the central University server can be found at: http://www.uvic.ca/webpages/index.html

This page is a short tutorial on Web publishing, including the technical steps involved in publishing Web pages at UIC. Overview - The Basic Steps The steps are:
  • Obtain an account on a computer with a Web server. If you choose to use an ACCC machine, this means you should open an account on tigger (for faculty/staff) or icarus (for students); both have Web HTTP servers. There are other machines on campus (for example in math or aces), but this tutorial presumes you are on tigger or icarus.
  • Set up a directory on the Web server machine to hold your Web pages.
    • For a personal Web site, create a directory called in your home directory on that machine; you'll put your personal Web pages in it. All files in this directory count against your account's home directory disk quota. (These days, we create a directory for you when you open your account.)
