Brunei to open Halal food resto in Davao
DAVAO CITY - Two hectares in this city are being developed into a $300,000 (P15 million) international halal food restaurant, according to a contingent from the Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce. Prof. Hj Kamaruddin Dato Seri Paduka Hj Talib, secretary general of the Brunei Chamber, said in a local report that there is a large potential market for halal food following the revitalization of the East ASEAN Growth Area initiative (BIMP-EAGA), which should result in a greater number of visitors from Mindanao's neighboring territories in Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia.

THE EXHIBITION
Artists working in the 1950s had the difficult task of determining whether to work in relation to dominant international trends, or to develop their own indigenous heritage - a dilemma shared by many creative artists across the globe in the post-colonial era. The exhibition opens with the watercolours of Rahman Chugtai (1897-1975) , an internationally famous figure whose overtly Islamic art has earned him the position of founder of the National School, although his work has only marginally influenced subsequent generations. Chugtai uses line and colour in a highly contrived way; the amorous content of his work evokes both the spirit of Persian poetry and the visual language of Beardsley, Rackham or Lautrec. A number of important artists emerged in the 1960s: Shakir Ali (1916-1975) Ahmed Parvez (1926-1979) lived and worked in Britain from 1955-64. His exuberant paintings hover on the borders of abstraction and figuration, expressing the dichotomy of his position as an exotic outsider in Britain, and as a westernised modernist on his return to Pakistan. Zainul Abedin (1917-1976) in East Pakistan produced powerful images of rural poverty; while Zubeida Aga (1922-1997), a courageous female pioneer, developed a personal language of colourful abstraction.

About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of Brunei Introduction This tiny oil-rich Islamic sultanate lying on the northwest coast of Borneo is known chiefly for the astounding wealth of its Sultan, its tax-free, subsidised society, and the fact that (statistically at least) its 280,000 people enjoy one of the highest per capita incomes on earth. Despite the ostentatious modern public buildings in the capital, most of the country remains undeveloped, unexploited and untouched by the outside world. Brunei is a little slice of Islamic heaven. Alcohol is virtually unobtainable, there's no nightlife to speak of, and the political culture encourages quiet acquiescence to the edicts of the sultan. The folk of Brunei are amply rewarded for their conformist ways with free healthcare, free education, free sporting centres, cheap loans and high, tax-free wages. Rather than aquaculture, enhancement and management of fishery resourcessea ranchingare expected to improve the sustainable utilization in mangrove areas. Target species for sea ranching in mangrove areas include mudcrab and black porgy . The mangrove situation in Southeast Asia is different from Japan's. To help countries in the region, the Japanese government has implemented a 5-year project with SEAFDEC that will develop mangrove-friendly aquaculture techniques and protect the environment.
Philippines
By Simeona Aypa , Department of Agriculture
Santiago Baconguis , Department of Environment and Natural Resources Mangrove areas before the 1980s were considered vast tracks of wastelands that had to be developed into other uses. In 1967, there were 418, 990 ha of mangroves; 15 years later, 239,387 remained; today, only about 100,000 ha are left. There are many causes of this destruction. On top of the list is charcoal and firewood utilization, followed by the expansion of agricultural areas, fishponds, urban and industrial development, harbor construction, mining and housing projects. With the rise in human population comes the demand for agriculture, aquaculture and industrial development.

Past and Present
A department to promote Malay Studies was established at the University of Singapore in the 1952/53 session on the recommendation of the Commission for University Education in Malaya. Za'ba and later Dr Roolvink became the Head of the Department. Following the independence of Malaya and the establishment of a separate University in Kuala Lumpur, the Department was transferred to Kuala Lumpur. On March 1, 1967, a Department of Malay Studies was re-established in Singapore with Prof Dr Syed Hussein Alatas as Head of Department. At its inception, the enrolment of students was modest. The teaching staff consisted of a Professor, an assistant lecturer, and a research assistant. The variety of courses we could offer consequently had to be limited to certain core areas. The subsequent years following the department's inception have seen both our teaching and research capabilities grow in strength. Currently there are five full-time academic staff consisting of one associate professor
