Biography

James Buchanan, (1791-1868), bu-kan'[sch ]n, 15th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . He took office at a time of sectional hysteria over slavery. The nation was headed toward civil war, and he could not avert it. When war came, after his administration, Buchanan was a convenient scapegoat. Before assuming the presidency, Buchanan had achieved a laudable record of 40 years of public service as a state assemblyman, congressman, senator, minister to Russia, secretary of state, and minister to Great Britain. As president, however, his many domestic and foreign programs fell victim to the rising slavery controversy. Buchanan personally opposed slavery, but as a public official he felt bound to sustain it where sanctioned by law. Political enemies called him a "trimmer," but he took middle ground consistently as a matter of policy. What some considered impotent vacillation was an expression of three fundamental convictions: (1) that only by compromise between the parts could a federal republic survive; (2) that citizens had to obey the law even when they thought it unjust; and (3) that questions of morality could not be settled by political action. Despite the secession movement, he succeeded in preventing hostilities between North and South, and he turned over to LINCOLN a nation at peace with eight slave states still in the Union.

Biography

James Buchanan, the 15th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1857-1861), served during the beginning of the secession crisis that led to the Civil War. Of Scottish-Irish descent, he was born on Apr. 23, 1791, in Cove Gap, near Mercersburg, Pa., the son of James Buchanan, a prosperous storekeeper, and his wife, Elizabeth Speer. Early Career Young James received an academy education and attended Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., graduating in 1809. He then studied law in Lancaster, where he began practice in 1813. Although a FEDERALIST in political sympathies, he supported the prosecution of the War of 1812 and participated as a volunteer in the defense of Baltimore. After serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1814-16), Buchanan devoted attention to his law practice, which soon prospered. In 1819 he became engaged to Ann Coleman, daughter of a wealthy Lancaster iron manufacturer, but as a result of a misunderstanding the engagement was ended. Her sudden death shortly thereafter left Buchanan desolate. He never married. In 1820, Buchanan was elected to the U.S.

15th President and Anderson Cottage Inhabitant

by Nick Minecci Anderson Cottage is noted for being the summer White House for Abraham Lincoln and site where he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, but it was also a getaway for several other presidents, including Lincoln's predecessor, James Buchanan.
The fifteenth president, Buchanan occupied the White House from 1857 to 1861 and had the unpleasant distinction of presiding over the country during the slide into civil war. His failure to find a workable middle ground that kept the United States from going to war with itself was a sad end to what was a brilliant and distinguished political career that began in 1815.
Born the second of 11 children to James and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan on April 23, 1791 in Cove Gap, Pa., Buchanan on what many thought was the edge of western civilization in the Allegheny Mountains. When writing about his birthplace in 1865 the former president stated "It is a rugged but romantic spot, and the mountain and mountain stream under the scenery cape captivating. I have warm attachments for it..."
In 1809 he graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., and at the age of 21 became a lawyer in the city of Lancaster. While there he became active in Federalist Party politics (the Federalist Party is the forerunner to the Democratic Party), and after serving in the War of 1812, was elected to two terms as a Pennsylvania Assemblyman from 1814 to 1816, maintaining his legal practice.

American President James Buchanan, 1791-1868
James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States was distinguished as the only bachelor to serve as Chief Executive and was faulted for permitting the secession of the southern states precipitating the Civil War. Buchanan died June 1st, 1868, the end of his presidential term closing his 47 year career in politics. Born April 23rd, 1791 outside of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, James Buchanan was the son of Irish immigrants James and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan. The senior Buchanan prospered as a mechantile owner and sent his son to Dickinson College of Carlisle and for private law study in Lancaster, where he passed the Pennsylvania bar in 1812. As a young attorney, Buchanan operated a successful law practice and was engaged to Anne C. Coleman, a daughter of one of the state's wealthiest families. In 1819 the long Coleman-Buchanan engagement was terminated, by which and for what reason continually open to speculation, as was Miss Coleman's death the same week by possible suicide. James Buchanan never married, but took his young niece Harriet Lane as a ward when she was orphaned by his only sister.

America's 21st president, Chester A. Arthur ascended under a cloud after the death of James A. Garfield, who was assassinated before completing 6 months as president. A former member of an infamous political machine, it was said that no man took the president's office "so widely distrusted, and no man ever retired more generally respected" than Chester A, Arthur. Remembered for establishing the Civil Service Commission, Arthur died November 18th, 1886 at the age of 57.

This article originally appeared in the Buchanan Banner, vol 25, number 3, Summer 1997. Ancestors of President Buchanan: Descendants of Thomas, of Donegal by Patty Hopkinson I appreciate comments and will do my best to answer questions about the genealogy presented here or about Buchanan genealogy in general (pattyh@vantek.net). Figure 1 shows 6 generations of Buchanans. I have attempted to distinguish between what has been established to a reasonable certainly as fact and information that is speculation and not backed up with evidence. I will begin by expanding on this chart working from top (generation 1) to bottom (generation 6), working left to right. Generation 1 Generation 2 John Buchanan, of Tyrone, born in 1676, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. In 1703 he married Catherine Black and they had three known sons (not listed in Figure 1) and probably as least more daughters whose names have escaped us over the generations. His known sons were John, Samuel and Thomas. Many generations of descendants for these 3 sons are well know and will be the subject of a future article. William Buchanan, of Tyrone was born circa 1677 in Co. Tyrone, Ireland. He married Jean and had several children. The exact number has ranged from 10-13, depending on which source you choose to follow. The 13 children are: Patrick, Robert, William, Arthur, Walter, Jeanette, John, George, James, Thomas. Margaret, Andrew and a daughter (name unknown), all born in Ireland. William and Jean are the ancestors of the

James Buchanan, the only bachelor to be President, spent his entire term of office in an unusual attempt to maintain the integrity of the Union. By the time he left office, the secession of the Southern States was already in progress. Elected:
    The Early Years
James Buchanan was born in a log Cabin at Cove Gap, a few miles outside of Mercerberg, Pennsylvania. At the age of five he and his family moved from the log cabin to Mercerberg. Buchanan received his initial education at the Old Stone Academy in Mercerberg. He went on to attend Dickinson College in Carlisle. He graduated in 1809 and moved to Lancaster to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1812. In October 1814, Buchanan was admitted to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Federalist. In 1820 he was elected to the US House of Representatives. Buchanan emerged as a leading opponent of the policies of John Quincy Adams. He was an active supporter of Jackson's presidential campaign. From 1829-31, Buchanan was chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. In 1830, Buchanan declined to run for re-election, preferring to return to his law practice. From 1832-33, he served as the US Ambassador to Russia, where he successfully concluded a commercial treaty. From 1834-1845, Buchanan served in the US Senate. From 1837, he served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and from 1945, for four years, he was US Secretary of State. In 1848, Buchanan was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. When he was not selected, he supported his opponent, Lewis Cass, who lost the election. In 1852, he was once again a contender for the nomination, lost again, and this time the winner he supported - Franklin Pierce - was elected. Pierce appointed Buchanan Ambassador to Great Britain.

James Buchanan Born: April 23, 1791

Place: Lancaster, Pennsylvania J ames Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, near Mercersburg. Like Abraham Lincoln, he was born in a log cabin, but unlike Lincoln, his beginnings were not so humble. His father was a successful merchant, having emigrated from Ireland some ten years before James' birth, and building up a prosperous general store and trading post. James was the second of eleven children. His family's situation allowed him the opportunity to gain an education, and at the age of 16 he went on to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He graduated with honors, went on to study law, and in 1813 he was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar. He set up a law practice in Lancaster that was soon interrupted by a short stint serving with a regiment that defended Baltimore during the War of 1812. At its conclusion, he returned to his law practice in Lancaster. Buchanan was a good lawyer and successful businessman, enhancing his reputation and building up his personal wealth. W B ut James Buchanan's retirement was short-lived. In 1852 he ran for President as a member of the Democratic Party, but the country elected Franklin Pierce. In 1853 Pierce selected Buchanan to be the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. In a way, this overseas post was beneficial to Buchanan's political career by enabling him to stay out of the domestic controversies regarding slavery, and particularly to avoid the bitter arguments over the Kansas-Nebraska Act. While politicians at home were embroiled in controversy, Buchanan was able to return to the United States, and to the Democratic National Convention of 1856, untarnished by all the domestic political controversy. Combined with his record of compromise and respect for the Southern states' positions on slavery, Buchanan's untarnished image proved too much for his political opponents, and on March 4, 1857 James Buchanan became the nation's 15th President. He was also the only bachelor to hold the nation's highest office.
