President James Buchanan Peace Medal. Twentieth Century Strike. James Buchanan Fifteenth President of the United States James Buchanan was born 1791 in Cove Gap, Franklin County Pennsylvania. He studied law; in 1812 he was admitted to the bar. He practiced at Lancaster, PA. Politically, he was a Federalist. In 1820, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. There he supported the Administration of President Monroe in maintaining an adequate military establishment. The Original Silver Buchanan Indian Peace Medals were produced with a new reverse. The reverse depicted a peaceful civilized scene with children playing in front of a house with a church in the background. In front of the scene, is an Indian plowing a field. Surrounding this peaceful scene is a dramatic depiction of an Indian scalping another Indian, an Indian princess, a bow, a quiver of arrows, and a peace pipe. This design was created in order to show the advantages of civilization over savagery. There were 97 of the Large Copper Mahogany-Bronze Finished medals produced between 1861-1892, and 44 of the Large Copper Chocolate-Bronze Finished medals were produced between 1893-1905. Many of the Copper medals were produced with the old reverse for the Fillmore/Pierce medals, as the original reverse for the Buchanan medals broke while striking Lincoln Peace Medals in 1862. There were also presumably a small number of the 62 mm Medals struck in copper with the Fillmore/Pierce reverse, at least one is known to exist.

JAMES BUCHANAN (APRIL 23, 1791 - JUNE 1, 1868) PARENTS: James Buchanan (c. 1761 – 1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan, of Lancaster (1767-1833). Buchanan attributed his success to his mother. YOUTH: Born in a log cabin in Cove Gap, near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Oldest of eight children. Educated by his mother and at Old Stone Academy in Mercersburg. Graduated from Dickinson College. He fell in love with Anne Coleman, daughter of Lancaster millionaire Robert Coleman. She died, probably by suicide, after they had a fight. Buchanan wrote a letter explaining the quarrel which was to be unsealed after his death. However, he later instructed his attorneys to destroy it after his death and they complied. He never married. HOBBIES: Despite being near-sighted in one eye and far-sighted in the other, Buchanan loved to read books and to play cards. CAREER: In the War of 1812 , he was among the first to volunteer for Judge Henry Shippen’s Dragoons after the British burned Washington in 1814. Elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for two terms, 1815 and 1816, as a Federalist.
