    Who are the Buffalo Soldiers?
African Americans have fought in military conflicts since colonial days. However, the Buffalo Soldiers, comprised of former slaves, freemen and Black Civil War soldiers, were the first to serve during peacetime. Once the Westward movement had begun, prominent among those blazing treacherous trails of the Wild West were the Buffalo Soldiers of the U.S. Army. These African Americans were charged with and responsible for escorting settlers, cattle herds, and railroad crews. The 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments also conducted campaigns against American Indian tribes on a western frontier that extended from Montana in the Northwest to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona in the Southwest. Throughout the era of the Indian Wars, approximately twenty percent of the U.S. Cavalry troopers were Black, and they fought over 177 engagements. The combat prowess, bravery, tenaciousness, and looks on the battlefield, inspired the Indians to call them "Buffalo Soldiers." Many Indians believe the name symbolized the Native American's respect for the Buffalo Soldiers' bravery and valor. Buffalo Soldiers, down through the years, have worn the name with pride.

22 in x 28 in The story of the American Buffalo Soldier is a story of courage and patriotism. These Buffalo Soldiers protected the American frontier and served in the Spanish-American War. All-black units continued to serve in American military campaigns, including the Mexican expedition, the Cuban Crisis, Philippine insurrection, both World Wars, and the Korean conflict. They chased bandit Pancho Villa, fought with Teddy Roosevelt at San Juan Hill, and the 9th Cavalry was Guard of Honor for President T. Roosevelt when he visited San Francisco and the Presidio. This was the first time black cavalry soldiers served as escort for a U.S. President. Regarding their nickname, Walter Hill writes in his article Exploring the Life and History of the Buffalo Soldiers: "... the 10th [cavalry] acquired the name 'Buffalo Soldiers; during the 1871 campaign against the Comanches in the Indian Territory. Grierson said that the Comanches respected the soldiers' tireless marching and dogged trail skills. They had earned the name of the rugged and revered buffalo. The 10th made the Buffalo its regimental coat of arms years later, but the term Buffalo Soldiers, became synonymous with both the 9th and 10th units."

By focusing on racial tensions and confrontations between Black soldiers and local white populations, Christian illuminates the hardships faced by African Americans in the armed services from the end of the Spanish-American War to U.S. entrance into World War I. Christian argues that whites saw African American soldiers as a double threat: they were authority figures whose presence challenged notions of white supremacy and they mounted legal challenges to Jim Crow segregation.

The Native Americans were the first to put into practice environmental techniques in order to preserve their environment. They practiced forestry and land management to preserve and keep the forests and natural grasses. They practiced prairie burning to create new growth and to control the migration of the buffalo. They knew how to use fire and how to control it by using backfires. Today, we are going back to these practices that were tried and proven by the Native Americans. Native Americans laid the basis for our modern medicine and pharmacology. The Incas and the Aztecs even practiced surgery. They understood the principle of sucking out the venom to treat a snakebite. They even had underarm deodorants, toothpaste, and breath fresheners. The Aztecs understood the role of the heart and blood circulation. Their doctors developed an extensive vocabulary that identified virtually all the organs of the body that the science of anatomy recognizes today. Cleanliness, bathing, and steam baths were practiced all over the Americas. Smallpox, bubonic plague, tuberculosis, malaria, yellow fever, and influenza were all unknown in the New World until the arrival of the Europeans.

African Americans have served in the United States Army since the Revolutionary War. They were, however, segregated in all black units until the Korean War. In 1866, Congress approved legislation creating six all African-American Army regiments: two cavalry (the 9th and 10 th ) and four infantry (the 38 th th th and 41 st ). These units represented the first African-American professional soldiers in a peace-time army. Some of the recruits for the new units were formerly slaves. Many others served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Another reorganization of the Army a short time later led to the merger of the four infantry regiments into two units: the 24 th and 25 th The nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" was originally given to the 10th Cavalry by Cheyenne warriors out of respect for their fierce fighting in 1867. The Native-American term used was actually "Wild Buffaloes", which was translated to "Buffalo Soldiers." In time, all African-American Soldiers became known as "Buffalo Soldiers." Despite second-class treatment these soldiers made up first-rate regiments of the highest caliber and had the lowest desertion rate in the Army. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, these units were consistently assigned to the harshest and most desolate posts. They were sent to subdue Mexican revolutionaries, outlaws, comancheros, rustlers, and hostile Native Americans; to explore and map the Southwest; to string telegraph lines; and to establish frontier outposts around which future towns and cities grew.
