    Republic of Bulgaria
    History
Allied with Germany in World Wars I and II, Bulgaria was twice defeated. Communists seized control in 1944 and consolidated power when Soviet troops marched into the country later that year. The monarchy was abolished by referendum in 1946. The prominent Bulgarian Communist leader Georgi Dimitrov, who had been a national hero against the Nazis in World War II, died in 1949. The 1947 constitution was named after him. In 1956, Todor Zhivkov came to power, first as Communist Party chief and later as prime minister. His authority remained unquestioned until a 1989 palace coup removed him as reforms swept through Eastern Europe. The Communists (renamed the Socialists) won free elections in 1990 but had trouble forming a stable government. A new constitution was approved in 1991, and subsequent elections established a multiparty parliament. Zhelyu Zhelev, a popular former dissident, was reelected president in 1992. The government worked to privatize industry, liquidate collective farms, and return property confiscated in 1948 to its owners or heirs. Petar Stoyanov of the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) was elected president in November 1996. In 1996, mass protests against the government's failed economic policies forced Socialist prime minister Zhan Videnov to resign more than a year early. UDF leader Ivan Kostov became prime minister in 1997, ending years of Socialist rule. In 1999, Bulgaria settled a long dispute with Macedonia over official recognition of Macedonian as a distinct language. The settlement has opened up the way for economic, political, and military cooperation.

by Neytcho ILTCHEV The author does not pretend for complete coverage on any of the below topics. This page is intended to provide a brief and comprehensive summary on Bulgarian history, economy and politics to the uninitiated rather than being a thorough reference. The Republic of Bulgaria is situated at the centre of the Balkan Peninsula in South-Eastern Europe. Currently the country is member of the United Nations , the Council of Europe, the NATO and Associated Member of the EU. Bulgaria is also member of the World Trade Organisation - WTO (former GATT) and the Central European Free Trade Agreement ( CEFTA Following the remarkable popular victory of ex-king Simeon's NDS party on 17 June 2001, Simeon II Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, became the Prime Minister. I n November 2001, Bulgarian voters elected 44-year old Georgi Parvanov to be their president in an apparent show of frustration over poverty and corruption in the country. M. Parvanov is to be the leader who will prepare the ground for Bulgaria's EU and NATO membership. Since early 1997 Bulgaria has been governed by a right-wing coalition with a strong and stable social and parliamentary support for four years. The President of the Republic was also member of the same coalition.
