Country Info Bulgaria Introduction Bulgaria General Data Bulgaria Maps Bulgaria Culture ... Bulgaria Time and Date Bulgaria History Back to Top Evidence of human habitation in the Bulgarian lands dates from the Middle Paleolithic Period (100,000 to 40,000 BC). Agricultural communities appeared in the Neolithic Period, and in the Bronze Age the lands were inhabited by Thracian tribes. The Thracians were eventually expelled or absorbed by Greek, Persian, and Roman colonies, but traces of their culture remain in their monuments devoted to horse worship and in the mummer (Bulgarian: kuker) tradition that still survives in southwestern Bulgaria. In Roman times Bulgaria was divided between the provinces of Moesia (to the north of the Balkan Mountains) and Thrace (to the south of the Balkans) and was crossed by the main land route from the west to the Middle East. The ruins of Roman towns and settlements are numerous, and extensive sites have been excavated at Plovdiv in the southwest, Varna in the northeast, and other locations. In the First Balkan War (1912-1913), Bulgaria, allied with Serbia, Montenegro, and Greece, defeated the Ottoman Empire. Division of the reconquered Balkan territories, however, resulted in the Second Balkan War in 1913, which Bulgaria lost to Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, the Ottoman Empire, and Romania; as a consequence, Bulgaria lost considerable territory. Bulgaria entered World War I in 1915 on the side of the Central Powers, but was forced to agree on an armistice with the Allies in September 1918. King Ferdinand abdicated in October and was succeeded by his son, Boris III. By the Treaty of Neuilly on November 27, 1919, Bulgaria lost most of what it had gained in the Balkan Wars and all of its conquests from World War I. It was also required to abandon conscription, reduce armaments, and pay large reparations.

History and Government
History:
In the 19th century, Bulgarian nationalists began to organise, noting the decline of the Ottoman empire and in expectation of eventual independence. Following an uprising in 1876, Bulgarian volunteer forces, with strong Russian support, defeated the Turks and in 1878 were able to establish an independent state under the terms of the Treaty of San Stefano. The remaining years of the century were fairly chaotic as the restored monarchy and newly-formed political parties jostled for position. The most important developments were the emergence of a strong socialist movement, and the politicisation of the rural population, organised around the Bulgarian Agrarian Union. King Ferdinand was the dominant figure in Bulgarian politics up to World War I, but was discredited thereafter due to his support for Germans.
Government: Legislative power is held by the 240-seat National Assembly, whose members are directly elected for maximum four-year terms by proportional representation. The Assembly elects a Council of Ministers headed by the Prime Minister. The Council of Ministers assists the President of the Republic, who as head of state wields supreme executive power and who is also directly elected for a five-year term.

T he Republic of Bulgaria is a small country situated in the SouthEastern part of Europe and occupies the eastern portion of the Balkan Peninsula. Its neighbors are Yugoslavia on the West, Romania on the North, and Greece and Turkey on the South. The Black Sea forms its eastern boundary. Land and Climate
Bulgaria’s major river is the 1,750-mile (2,800-kilometer) Danube, which forms much of the border with Romania. The longest river originating in Bulgaria is the Maritsa. Other major rivers include the Iskur, Tundzha, and Struma. The flow of many Bulgarian rivers varies with the season. Some of the rivers become dry by the end of the summer.
The climate of Bulgaria is continental, with warm summers and cold winters. In the southern portion of the country, which is tempered by Mediterranean influences, and along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast the winters are comparatively mild. The climate is on the whole favorable for agriculture, but it is too cold for the growing of citrus fruits and olives.
People Bulgaria was found in 681 by the Protobulgarians. The Bulgarians descend from the Protobulgarians. The majority of Bulgarians who profess a faith belong to the Eastern Orthodox church.

Bulgaria has its asbestos deposits (antophylite and tremolite) as well as regions with natural asbestos admixtures in soil and endemic findings of pleural plaques. The prevalence of endemic pleural plaques has been surveyed in 1973-1978 through a fluorographic examination of the entire population of the endemic region, older than 14. The survey covered 96059 subjects revealing 720 individuals with pleural plaques (1). The majority of the findings (94.6%) were in persons older than 40. The incidence of plaques was greater for antophylite. The existence of regions with asbestos injuries caused by natural admixtures of the mineral in soil has been confirmed in other countries as well (Russia, Cuba, Austria, Greece, Turkey). Figure 1 displays the location of acknowledged endemic regions in the Balkan states.

    The Memory Remains
Or Why Should You Know Your History?
Recently I came upon the most interesting text piece, I've met for the last couple of months. It was the so called CIA World Book Of Facts. It had the most astonishing beginnig I've read in a historical article. Let me paste it here for you: "Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, and Bulgaria began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. Today, reforms and democratization keep Bulgaria on a path toward eventual integration into the EU and NATO. "
No kidding! So what do we have here? A newly born state with a great anticipation of democaratic changes coming.

    History and Culture
The territory of Bulgaria has been inhabited since the earliest historical times: the Stone Age and the Chalcolithic Age. Archaeological discoveries from that time have been made near Karlovo, in the region of the towns of Nova Zagora, Veliko Turnovo, Vidin, Sofia, Teteven, Troyan and in the Rhodope Mountains. The oldest gold treasure in the world, discovered near Varna, is dated to that time. During the Bronze Age the present-day Bulgarian lands were inhabited by the Thracians, mentioned for the first time by Homer. They were engaged in agriculture and stockbreeding, and left evidence of a rich culture (the Vulchitrun gold treasure). The first Thracian state unions emerged in the 11th-6th centuries BC, which flourished in the 7th-6th centuries BC. In the 1st century BC their lands were conquered by Rome, and after the 5th century AD they were incorporated in the Byzantine Empire. The Thracians were later gradually assimilated by the Slavs who settled in the Balkan Peninsula in the 6th century AD. In the second half of the 7th century, the Proto-Bulgarians - an ethnic community of Turkic origin - settled on the territory of the present-day Northeastern Bulgaria. In alliance with the Slavs they formed the Bulgarian State, which was recognised by the Byzantine Empire in 681 AD. Khan Asparouh stood at the head of that state and Pliska was made its capital.

The Council of Ministers - High State Institution of the Executive Power in the Republic of Bulgaria
The Council of Ministers was established for the first time in the history of state rule in Bulgaria under Article 148 of the Turnovo Constitution. The structure, composition and functions of the Council of Ministers, as they were stipulated in the Constitution of the Principality of Bulgaria, adopted on 16 April 1879, resulted from the political discussions during the Constituent Assembly in 1879. Since then and to this day, the formation, structuring and functioning of the Council of Ministers are associated with several important events and several amendments to the Constitution, as a result of which the Government took shape as the institution determining the modern Bulgarian politics and state principles. The composition of the first Council of Ministers was determined on 1 July 1879 with a decree of Prince Alexander Battemberg, and in compliance with Article 161 of the Turnovo Constitution it consisted of six ministers: Todor Bourmov – Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, M. Balabanov – Minister of Foreign Affairs and of Religious Denominations, General P. Parensov –Minister of Defence, G. Nachevich – Minister of Finance and D. Grekov – Minister of Justice. Under the Constitution of the Principality of Bulgaria, the members of the Council of Ministers were appointed and dismissed by the Prince, and one of them was chosen by the Prince to be the Council's Chairman.
