How to attract butterflies to your garden and keep them there.
Butterfly gardens are easy to plant. They have a lot of color, are fragrant, and have no special shape. The best gardens resemble fields that have been left go. This garden should have either a few trees or large bushes to protect the butterflies from the wind or rain. Your garden should be positioned so it gets plenty of sunshine. Just plant large masses of the nectar and host plants listed below. Create a "puddle" for butterflies to get extra moisture and minerals. Don't forget to place a large flat rock for a basking spot to complete your "

Create a butterfly garden
N atural meadows have almost disappeared from our cities and suburbs. Gone too are the butterflies, birds and other wildlife that depend on this natural habitat. Luckily, butterflies are easily enticed back to the city. It is simple to plant a garden that provides caterpillars with plants to feed on and butterflies with flowers from which they can sip nectar. Creating and restoring butterfly habitats will also provide you and your family with a unique opportunity to observe butterflies close to home. Chances are some of the plants that already grow in your garden or back yard can be used, and with a bit of planning additional butterfly friendly plants can be added in the spring.
Site requirements
The ideal location for a butterfly garden is a large, open, wildflower-filled meadow that is basking in the sun and shielded from strong winds.Unfortunately it is impossible for the majority of Canadians to recreate these exact conditions, however it is important to try and provide for a few basic requirements in your butterfly gardens;
Sunshine: Butterflies love the sun. A site with good exposure is more likely to attract butterflies and keep them around. A few large stones to capture heat and provide basking spots are also a good addition.

Soil: What good gardeners should know

The dreams of fantastic gardens are born in the spring when the weather warms and the garden centers are full of plants and the seed catalogs promise a bountiful harvest of luscious vegetables.
These dreams can become a reality, just like most things that are worthwhile, but one must be willing to invest time, a little money and work.
Basil King of herbs

There's royalty in the herb garden. It's Basil, king among herbs! The ultimate herb of summer is beloved by cooks around the world. An easy to grow annual, basil thrives in warm, sunny gardens. When its leaves are brushed against, basil releases its exotic fragrance.
Rhododendrons in the garden

Some of the most beautiful shrubs in the woodlands and gardens of East Tennessee are rhododendrons, but to my mind they are not planted nearly as often as they could be.
Adding color vertically in the garden

Vines are many times the forgotten plants, yet, with their climbing habit, they can add such a significant dimension to the garden. Just at the law and ground-covers are considered the floor of the garden and trees and shrubs are the walls and ceilings, vines are the drapes and the swags of the garden. Use them to soften and enhance or to hide and disguise architectural features. They can be used to form a quick screen or to extend limited garden space.
Seven steps to beautiful roses
One of the most frequently asked questions about growing roses is "How do you keep roses growing a pleasure and not a chore?" This in response to most folks assumption that growing roses is too much trouble and is not worth the effort. My response is that for a teenager, learning to drive a car is also a lot of work, but once you get that Learner's Permit it is well worth the effort. You are set for life. And it really wasn't that difficult.

INTRODUCTION
Butterflies go wherever they please and please wherever they go. They are messengers of nature, not only adding brilliance to their surroundings but also pollinating flowers and revealing the healthiness of our communities. Historically, butterflies have been revered in art and lore but otherwise have been ignored. Today, however, we are beginning to realize the many benefits of these smaller wildlife forms. The role of butterflies is important in our natural world. Their sheer numbers supply a vast food source for predators, and they are significant plant pollinators. If plants are not pollinated, seeds and fruits are not produced. With their acute sensitivity to pesticides and toxins, their presence, diversity and relative abundance indicate the overall well-being of our ecosystems. Their message is simple: A healthy community usually has a large number and wide array of butterfly species; a contaminated or altered community doesn't. Butterfly-watching ranks high among our outdoor pleasures, right alongside enjoying birds and wildflowers. The aesthetic appeal of these winged creatures is even more significant once we realize that butterflies neither sting, bite, nor transmit disease. Using this booklet and other related materials, may you learn more about nature through the world of butterflies.

DESCRIPTION (back to top) This new edition of the classic handbook describes how to attract butterflies and other beneficial and beautiful insects to your garden. Butterfly Gardening presents everything the gardener needs to know to create intricate, small-scale ecosystems in an urban or suburban setting that can substitute for the rapidly vanishing habitats that are essential to the survival of butterflies. Contributors to this volume include Miriam Rothschild, an eminent entomologist, avid butterfly gardener, and expert in wildflower conservation, who describes the life cycle of butterflies, how and what they see, and how this relates to "gardening with butterflies." Landscape architect Mary Booth provides imaginative garden designs and easy-to-follow directions for designing and planting. Edward S. Ross, pioneer of close-up nature photography, discusses observing and photographing butterflies. The book also includes a "Master Plant List" of species that attract butterflies, butterfly food plants listed by geographic region, seed and plant resources, a list of gardening and conservation organizations, and a bibliography of books and periodicals about butterflies.

Articles Butterflies, with their colorful costumes and their frilly aerobatics are beautiful and entertaining visitors to our gardens. On this page you will find tips and suggestions on attracting these lovely creatures to your garden. "To make a wish come true, whisper it to a butterfly. Upon these wings it will be taken to heaven and granted. For they are the messengers of the Great Spirit." ~ Native American Legend ~ Requirements 1. Good Placement. Butterflies are cold blooded creatures and need the sun to warm their wings. For this reason, they prefer a sunny site that is protected from the wind . Large plants and shrubs around the perimeter of a garden will help to provide this protection. A large flat rock in a garden provides a warm spot for basking. They may frequently be seen just sitting on the rock, with their wings spread, soaking up the sun's rays. 2. Nectar Source.
