E-mail this page to a friend How to create a butterfly garden When planning your butterfly garden, it is a good idea to find out which species are resident in your area and the plants on which they are found. It is also important to provide plants on which the butterflies will lay their eggs and upon which caterpillars can feed. Check Foremost's Butterflies are Blooming site for a list of good nectar sources and larval plants Choosing the Right Spot Since butterflies tend to be more active in the sun, large open sunny areas are an important factor for the garden. Some protection from the wind is also necessary, and this can be provided by planting shrubby nectar and food plants like Buddleia, Honeysuckle, Spice Bush and Hawthorn. A small fence, a row of shrubs, evergreen trees or even a large rock can serve as a shelter from the wind. Butterflies cannot drink directly from open water so it is a good idea to create "puddles" of moist sand or mud. Placing a few rocks or sticks in this "puddle" allows the butterflies to perch and drink. Rocks also provide a site where butterflies can bask to store body heat from the sun.

Panter, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Agent (Commercial Greenhouse), Adams County April 1997 Here in Colorado we are lucky. Not only do we have many species of butterflies that frequent our area, but we also have several types of hummingbirds that visit the Front Range. Many of these creatures may simply stop in our yards for a break on their way up to the high country. However, if you want to encourage them to stick around for a while, there are a few steps you can take. To set up a butterfly and hummingbird Garden, keep a few simple thoughts in mind. Butterflies First, realize that each life stage of the butterfly has specific needs. The food sources for immature stages (various caterpillars) and adult butterflies can often be very different. Food supply is critical and so is the physical environment they each need. Since the Front Range of Colorado is prone to high winds at certain times of the year, it is helpful to provide shelter from wind for butterflies. Using windbreaks or a sheltered area is a good start. It is also important to know that most butterflies have specific host plants on which they develop. Monarch butterfly caterpillars will only develop on milkweed. Black swallowtails feed only on parsley, dill and related plants.
