Switzerland This page has been accessed times since August 19, 1996. The Institute for Computer Systems has a long tradition in creating both hardware and software systems. Typically, these two aspects of system design are treated separately. Modern Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), however, have reduced the gap between hardware and software. Our group's research focuses on tools which make the construction of hardware in the form of FPGA designs a fast and simple process. The systems we have built are used in education and research. The Programmable Logic Device ispGAL22V10

Circuits to be implemented by the popular GAL22V10 PLD can be described in Lola and mapped onto the device by the program GAL22V10. Configurations can be loaded and tested while the chip remains in place. The PLD features an and/or matrix with 22 inputs and 10 outputs fed into its 10 macrocells. 12 of the 22 inputs come from input pins, and 10 are feedbacks from the macrocells. One of the inputs also serves as clock input. Signals (variables) are associated with signal numbers by position assignments in the Lola program. The numbers are - 9 for macrocell outputs and 10 - 21 for inputs. (The number of the clock is 21).
Restrictions
Programs to be loaded into the PLD must comply with the following restrictions: There can be at most 10 output variables. Given n outputs, there can be at most 22-n input variables. There are no local variables (exception: tri-state outputs, see below). All assignments for the outputs must have one of the following forms, where F(x) stands for an expression of input and output variables. We recommend to use disjunctive normal form for F.

With the introduction of AutoLisp and the growing power of AutoCAD as a modeling system, it became clear to me that we were on to something far more powerful and significant than a drafting system. This was an attempt to place CAD in the position I believe it deservesin the mainstream of computer scienceas opposed to the backwater in which many believe it languishes. This was an internally-distributed ``think piece''. I am even more convinced now of the arguments expressed herein than the day I wrote them.

Over the brief history of Autodesk, we have observed the evolution of how CAD is perceived. We have always believed that we were selling a ``word processor for drawings'', suitable for anybody who draws as part of their work. The market as a whole and the analysts in particular, saw CAD as ``a package for architects'', or at most a tool applicable to a small set of highly specialised markets. Time has proven us right. We could not have sold so many AutoCADs so rapidly, nor would we have the broad and flat distribution among market segments were CAD as specialised as the pundits believed. Moreover, the fact that have continually opened new, ``nontraditional'' markets for CAD without even trying vindicates our belief and confirms that in this case the users are way ahead of most of the sellers.

The rapid evolution and explosive growth of integrated circuit technology have impacted society more than any other technological development of the 20th century. Integrated circuits (ICs) are used universally and the expanding use of IC technology requires more accurate circuit analysis methods and tools, prompting the introduction of computers into the design process. The goal of this book is to build a firm foundation in the use of computer-assisted techniques for IC device and process design. Both practical and analytical viewpoints are stressed to give the reader the background necessary to appreciate CAD tools and to feel comfortable with their use.
Technology CAD - Computer Simulation of IC Processes and Devices presents a unified discourse on process and device CAD as interrelated subjects, building on a wide range of experiences and applications of the SUPREM program. Chapter 1 focuses on the motivation for coupled process and device CAD. In Chapter 2 SUPREM III is introduced, and process CAD is discussed in terms of ion-implantation, impurity diffusion, and oxidation models. Manufacturing Engineering Technology Associate in Science Manufacturing Engineering Technology is a varied and challenging field that is becoming increasingly important because of new production methods. Manufacturing Engineering Technicians work with engineers to design experiments, plan production methods, find better ways to manufacture products, and in troubleshooting, inspection, and quality control. Students use Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) technologies to design cutting tools, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and dies; study production line layout, production forecasting, planning, inventory control, and statistical quality control; learn the methods of determining and distributing expenses and estimating material, labor, and tool costs in the manufacturing of a product; and make time studies of manufacturing operations; and hydraulic control, manufacturing processes, and engineering materials. A major aim of robotics research is the provision of systems which simplify the programming of robots, enabling experienced designers and engineers to implement robotic devices as part of a larger systems without the need to become expert programmers. Also in the quest for a flexible industrial production system is it desirable to be able to reprogram robots offline, so that they can be doing one task whilst being prepared for another. This paper describes the mathematical and computational background to a system which enables the development and testing of robot programs in a CAD environment in a way that is simple to use and compatible with existing methods used in CAD systems. Computer science is concerned with the design, modeling, analysis, and applications of computer-related systems. Its study at UCLA provides education at the undergraduate and graduate levels necessary to understand, design, implement, and use the software and hardware of digital computers and digital systems. The programs provide comprehensive and strongly related studies of subjects in computer system architecture, computer network modeling and analysis, distributed computer systems, programming languages and systems, artificial intelligence, computer science theory, and scientific computing. The undergraduate and graduate studies and research projects in computer science are supported by extensive computing resources. IC physical-design problems that pundits four years ago proclaimed "solved" brought some 120 experts back to the table here last week to address them anew. The Fifth Physical Design Workshop , sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery 's Special Interest Group on Design Automation , explored the chasm between circuit layout and circuit functions in the deep-submicron realm and concluded that a lack of focus, not tools, is what's holding the EDA industry back from closing the gap. "The CAD-research community is solving yesterday's problems rather than tomorrow's," said Cadence Design Systems fellow Lou Scheffer, a veteran floor-planning and place-and-route-research specialist who spent two years as an IC designer. "We are wasting a lot of time improving things that are good enough while ignoring the things that will determine how we design in a few years. "CAD people today are still concerned with finding a slightly better algorithm for some old problem, when they should be worrying about how in the world they are going to use 50 million transistors in any reasonable amount of time."

Professor, Computer Science and Engineering Key Research Topics Computer Aided Design (CAD) techniques have provided an enabling methodology to design efficiently and successfully large-scale high-performance circuits for a wide range of applications. Among the wide spectrum of CAD techniques, my research area lies on high level synthesis and physical design automation. Synthesis and physical design otpimization addresses various aspects of bridging the gap between achieving the design quality and meeting time-to-market pressure. The technique allows one to make tradeoffs between timing and die size, without sacrificing the time to the market. This is a research area that combines the knowledge of software and hardware, and an area that computer scientists can apply their theories and optimization techniques to practical applications. General information On registration with the University, all engineering students are given a student identity card. Apply, with this card, at the University IT Services reception in the Laver building (or use the registration station in room 207 in Harrison building) to obtain a login name and password which gives access to the clusters of PCs in rooms 207 and K1.
