Catalog description:
    This course (project) has a goal to give an experience for students in computer aided geometric design. Bzier surfaces are building blocks for NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) which became industrial standard for CAD software. For practice it is important to find their parametrizations which are most suitable for visualization. Students are free to choose any 3D computer graphics software (preferably MAPLE).

Goals:
    The course (project) is concerned with visualization of rational Bzier surfaces: TP-surfaces, Bzier triangular patches and more general toric patches. They all are defined as parametric surfaces. The goal is to find a reparametrization of the same degree with the most uniform grid, which does not change shape of the given patch. The emphasis will be on practical implementation of the algorithm.

Goals:
    The course disclose the link between the geometry and recent technology: the Virtual Reality Modelling Language is a basis to model nontrivial geometric objects. The examples of geometric and topological objects are being discussed: parametrizable algebraic surfaces, Mobius surface, Klein bottle, knots and 3-D varieties, Steiner and Boya's surfaces, the task of sphere conversion. The VRML methods are applied in order to discuss the possibilities and limitations of virtual modelling, as well as problems unsolved. The special emphasis is given on practical implementation of algorithms.

Miodrag Potkonjak received his Ph.D. degree in Electical Engineering and Computer Science from University of California, Berkeley in 1991. In October 1991, he joined the VLSI CAD Department in Computer and Communication Research Laboratories, NEC USA, Princeton, NJ. Since September 1995, he has been an assistant professor in Computer Science Department at University of California, Los Angeles. His research interest include computer aided system and IC synthesis and analysis, integration of computations and communications, experimental applied algorithmics, and DSP and communications VLSI design. He has published more than 70 papers in CAD, signal processing, VLSI design, and testing journals and conferences. He has received three distinguished paper citations at the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design, two Best paper nominations at the Design Automation Conference, and the Best paper nomination at the Asia-South Pacific Design Automation Conference (ASP DAC).

Dr. Cong was born in Beijing, China, in 1963. He received his B.S. (1985) degree from Peking University in Beijing, China. His M.S. (1987) and Ph.D. (1990) degrees are from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, he is a Professor in the UCLA Computer Science Department, and Co-Director of the VLSI CAD Laboratory.
Dr. Cong received the Best Graduate Award from Peking University in 1985, and Ross Martin Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Illinois in 1989. He was awarded the National Science Foundation Research Initiation Award and Young Investigator Award in 1991 and 1993, respectively. He received Northrop Corporation Outstanding Junior Faculty Research Award from UCLA in 1993. He received IEEE Trans. on CAD Best Paper Award in 1995. He received the ACM Recognition of Service Award in 1997 and ACM SIGDA Meritorious Service Award in 1998. He was appointed to be a Guest Professor of Peking University since 2000. He received SRC (Semiconductor Research Corporation) Inventor Recognition Award in 2000 and SRC Technical Excellence Award in 2001.

Activities include working on software and hardware projects in the Columbia Robotics Lab. Some current projects include automated 3-D site modeling of outdoor structures, graphical simulation of multifingered grasping, 3-D reconstruction of objects, and medical robotics.     Master of Science in Computer Engineering (M.S.C.E.) Admission Requirements
    The University's general admission requirements are discussed. A student lacking undergraduate prerequisites for graduate courses in electrical engineering and computer science must complete these prerequisites or receive approval from the graduate adviser and the course instructor. A diagnostic exam may be required. Specific admission requirements follow. The student entering the M.S.C.E. program should meet the following guidelines:
  • an undergraduate preparation equivalent to a baccalaureate in computer science or electrical engineering from an accredited engineering program, a grade point average in upper-division quantitative course work of 3.0 or better on a 4-point scale, and scores on the GRE examination of 500, 700 and 600 for the verbal, quantitative and analytical components respectively, or 1800 for the total score.
  • Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation from individuals able to judge the candidate's probability of success in pursuing master's study. Applicants must also submit an essay outlining the candidate's background, education and professional goals. Students from other engineering disciplines or from other science and math areas may be considered for admission to the program on a case-by-case basis; however, some additional course work may be necessary before starting the master's program.

    Dr. Harris started his career at Texas Instruments where he spent 22 years prior to joining the academic ranks. From 1967 to 1978 he was corporate manager of CAD/CAM systems at TI. From 1978 to 1981 he was the Vice President at Productivity International, Inc. where he completed several major consulting jobs in the area of CAD/CAM systems and Management of Technology at the following corporations; Chrysler Corporation, Whirlpool Corporation, Dresser Industries and Recognition Equipment. In 1988 he was appointed Assistant Dean in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at SMU. Dr. Harris was named the Outstanding Undergraduate Professor in the Department of Operations Research and Engineering Management in SEAS at SMU three years in a row beginning in 1984. In August of 1996 he was appointed Associate Dean in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas Dallas , the position he currently holds. Dr. Harris has completed 10 doctoral students under his direction and served on the committee's of 18 others. He is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Engineering Valuation and Cost Analysis. He is also on the Review Board of the Engineering Management Journal and the Advisory Board for the Systems and Software Engineering Institute at UT Austin. Teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science; conduct research and supervise graduate students in the area of computer-aided design of VLSI circuits, rapid prototyping of digital systems, and computer architecture.
