COURSE: MATH 211, Calculus for Business and Social Science (3). An elementary treatment of topics from differential and integral calculus, with applications in social science and business. TEXT: Calculus and its Applications 7th Edition, by Bittinger (2000) COURSE OBJECTIVES: The course will introduce the central ideas of calculus: the instantaneous rate of growth of a function, and the average value of a function over an interval. The course will show how these concepts can be applied to solve problems in a variety of areas, including business, economics, biology, and sociology. The course will include problems on exponential growth and decay. CALCULUS on the WEB:

Algebra Tutorials Completing the Square
ppt version

html version
Completing the square is one way to solve quadratic equations algebraically. It is a necessary tool when examining conic sections – circles, ellipses, parabolas and hyberbolas. By completing the square, equations of conic sections can be expressed in standard form. Composition of Functions
ppt version

html version
Composition of functions is a way of combining functions that has applications in algebra and calculus. In calculus, it is important to be able to identify two functions that make up a given composite function. Decomposing functions – identifying the “inner” function and the “outer” function – is another calculus application. Difference Quotient
ppt version

html version
The difference quotient is an extension of evaluating functions. The difference quotient is useful in finding slope and rates of change. In calculus, the definition of derivatives uses the difference quotient. Difference Quotient Average Rate of Change
ppt version

html version
Average rate of change is an application of the difference quotient with calculus connections, most notably, the slope of a secant line to a graph.

30. Instructions For Calculus Students Using Webtester
In order to prepare you for the calculus course we have made a special Webbasedsoftware system, the WebTester that contains on-line pre-calculus tutorials.
http://www.math.vanderbilt.edu/courses/calctest.htm
Instructions for using the WebTester tutorials
(for Calculus students, Fall 1999) In order to prepare you for the calculus course we have made a special Web-based software system, the WebTester that contains on-line pre-calculus tutorials. There are two tutorials in the WebTester. Each of them has a form of a practice quiz with 12 questions. The questions are randomly generated, so you can take the quiz as many times as you want, you will never get the same questions twice. If you answer a question in a quiz incorrectly (or simply don't answer it at all) you get a help describing in details how to solve the problem. So you should read the explanations and then take the quiz again. The tutorials cover most of the pre-calculus material needed in the calculus course. The URL for the WebTester is http://webtester.math.vanderbilt.edu:8080 Please read the following instructions before you use the tutorials
  • If you have not taken a test before, you need to register. Choose any login name (longer than 2 symbols) and any password (longer than 2 symbols and shorter than 8 symbols, no spaces in the login name and password allowed). After you choose the login name and password, click on the "Submit Login/Password" button. You can now enter the "WebTester Club" by typing your login name/password again.

Addison-Wesley Introduces MathXL and web Mathematica Collaboration
March 18, 2002Addison-Wesley, one of the world's most respected textbook publishers, has launched new online calculus tutorials and testing using web Mathematica technology from Wolfram Research. MathXL for Calculus is a web-based program designed to help diagnose students' calculus skills and to create a personalized study plan for each student based on the student's test results. web Mathematica provides the long sought-after ability to quickly and easily add interactive calculations to the web and was intended for the development and deployment of sophisticated intranet and internet sites such as MathXL for Calculus. Harnessing the power of web Mathematica technology, MathXL for Calculus offers:
    • Adaptive multiple-choice and free-response questions
    • Evaluation of student answers in real time
    • Graphical equation editor for symbolic answer input
    • Book-specific feedback in tutorial exercises
    • Tracked tutorial and test results stored in online grade book
To develop MathXL for Calculus, Addison-Wesley needed the display and evaluation capabilities of a symbolic computing system online, and web
