Welcome!
Self: I have just graduated from Brooklyn College of CUNY with a math major. So what am I doing now? Well, I'm working at TIAA-CREF. Seems like a nice place. And I've completed the first two actuarial examinations. Mission: I hope you enjoy looking around my site. I built it because of the need I had when I took Calculus 1... I'd like to do what I can to help everyone else in that position. Not all teachers are created equal, and no one would ever blame you for needing help with Calculus. Guide: This site is designed very simply. On the left side of the page you can see the navigation bar, which takes you to every area in this site. You have probably come for the calculus tutorials, and for that you go to the Topics . Of special interest is the Reference Tables , which are quite invaluable. When you're done, for my sake, go and sign the guestbook
To the Calculus already
Begin at the an index of all topics covered in my tutorial. I am continually writing, and if you have any specific section that you would like me to discuss, send an email and I'd be glad to expand on my site. I think I've nearly finished Calculus 1 by now.

52. Limit Definition Of The Derivative - HMC Calculus Tutorial
back to the math tutorial index back to the math tutorial index. Limit Definitionof the Derivative The geometric meaning of the derivative f¢(x) =, d dx, f(x).
http://www.math.hmc.edu/calculus/tutorials/limit_definition/
Limit Definition of the Derivative
The geometric meaning of the derivative f (x) = d dx f(x) is the slope of the line tangent to y = f(x) at x. Let's look for this slope at P: The secant line through P and Q has slope
f(x+ D x)-f(x) (x+ D x)-x
f(x+ D x)-f(x) D x
We can approximate the tangent line through P by moving Q towards P, decreasing D x. In the limit as D x 0, we get the tangent line through P with slope
lim
D x
f(x+ D x)-f(x) D x
We define f (x) =
lim
D x f(x+ D x)-f(x) D x If the limit as D x at a particular point does not exist, f (x) is undefined at that point. We derive all the basic differentiation formulas using this definition. Example For f(x) = x f (x) lim D x (x+ D x) -x D x lim D x (x D x)x+ D x )-x D x lim D x D x)x+ D x D x lim D x D x) as expected. Example For f(x) = x f (x) lim D x x+ D x x D x lim D x x-(x+ D x) (x+ D x)(x) D x lim D x D x (x+ D x)(x) D x lim D x (x+ D x)(x) x again as expected. Notes The limit definition of the derivative is used to prove many well-known results, including the following:
  • If f is differentiable at x , then f is continuous at x
  • Differentiation of polynomials.
  • Product and Quotient Rules for differentiation.
