Gift of Robert Arneson and Sandra Shannonhouse, 1990 ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Benicia, California in 1930, Robert Arneson was encouraged by his father to draw. He became a proficient draftsman early in life and drew cartoons for a local newspaper as a teenager. After Arneson studied art education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland he taught in a local high school, where he became interested in ceramics. He went on to receive an MFA from Mills College in 1958. Arneson became head of the ceramics department at the University of California at Davis in 1962 and became a full professor of art in 1973. ABOUT THE ART General Nuke addresses nuclear holocaust at a time of escalating tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, when both nations had temporarily abandoned negotiations on arms control. Arneson's image of General Nuke presents an aggressive, caustic stereotype of a military leader. With bloody fangs and a phallic MX "peacekeeper"missile for its nose, the snarling head wears the helmet of a three-star general, which is covered with a global military map incised with abbreviations for the available nuclear weapons: ICBM, IRBM, ACLM, SLBM. Some of the inscriptions ridicule those who, in Arneson's view, foster war, while other markings provide facts about the impact of a one-megaton bomb ("Fallout: lethal 600 sq. mi., death risk 2000 sq. mi."). Even the pedestal is part of the message: the head is mounted on a bronze column depicting hundreds of charred, stacked corpses. It rests on a base of granite, a pedestal traditionally used for memorials.

UCSF Fresno carries out its training and patient care charge through a network of affiliated partners. Residents have the opportunity to work in a variety of primary training sites with an impressive list of specialists at major hospitals, health agencies and programs, clinics, and individual physician's offices. In addition, Fresno County is the center of health care between Los Angeles and Sacramento. Acute care hospitals, the only Level 1 Trauma Center, a regional burn center, and numerous non-hospital programs serve a young and culturally heterogeneous population.
University Medical Center (UMC)
University Medical Center (formerly known as Valley Medical Center) has been a major teaching hospital in the Central Valley for more than 80 years. More than 40 percent of the physicians now practicing in the region received some internship or residency training at UMC. With the establishment of the UCSF-Fresno Medical Education Program in 1975, the hospital became formally affiliated with UCSF. UMC continues its long history and rich tradition of quality involvement in medical education.
This large medical center provides inpatient and comprehensive outpatient services to people of all ages. Annually there are more than 10,000 admissions, about 4,500 major surgical procedures, 1,800 deliveries, and 200,000 outpatient and emergency department visits. Special hospital services at UMC include the highly acclaimed Regional Burn Center, a high-riskk maternity program, a center for chronic renal dialysis, and the only Level 1 Trauma Center located between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. UMC is the site for nearly two-thirds of UCSF-Fresno program post-doctoral training. A substantial volunteer clinical faculty augments its full-time physician faculty.

The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is an independent philanthropy focusing on the major health care issues facing the nation. The Foundation is an independent voice and source of facts and analysis for policymakers, the media, the health care community, and the general public. The Foundation is primarily an operating organization that develops and runs its own research and communications programs, often in partnership with outside organizations. The Foundation contracts with a wide range of outside individuals and organizations through its programs and also continues to make a small number of grants for unsolicited proposals each year. Through our in-house policy research and communications programs, and through contracts and grants, we work to provide reliable information in a health system in which the issues are increasingly complex and debate is often dominated by organized interests. Our work is focused in three main areas: Health Policy, Media and Public Education, and Health and Development in South Africa
