CALIFORNIA'S GEOGRAPHY CREATES CHALLENGES FOR BROADCASTERS
Los Angeles may be the world's entertainment capital, but it is a difficult area to place television and radio antennas for broadcasting. The metropolitan area spreads out from the Pacific Ocean to Southern California's upper and lower deserts over valleys, mountains, canyons and coastal plains. While this unique geography offers something for everyone in terms of urban, suburban, houseboat, small-town and even semi-rural living, reception of television and radio signals can be problematic if there is no line-of-sight to a transmitting antenna. The challenge to broadcasters is clear in this perspective view from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission available online at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/pictures/srtm

The Center for Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing CSARS
G EOGRAPHY at Cal State LA is a program offering opportunities for careers in many different fields. Geography is an ideal discipline for the individual who is interested in either the cultural or physical environment and who enjoys field work and research as well as travel. Geographers practice their knowledge and skills in a diversity of ways, ranging from researching urban or environmental issues to the use of computers and satellite imagery in designing and creating maps. The purpose of the Department of Geography and Urban Analysis is to provide a program within the physical and social sciences that can provide the necessary understanding and skills that will lead to a satisfying and rewarding career after graduation. Whether studying traditional human-land relationships, elements of the physical environment, or contemporary urban problems, the geographer strives towards understanding the complex interrelationships that are part of both the physical and cultural environments. Interpreting the cultural and physical patterns of the earth requires training in both observational and technical skills. The department offers specialized course work in such areas as cartography, computer cartography, computer applications in geography, geographic information systems (GIS), geomorphology, locational analysis, meteorology and climatology, field methods, map reading, air photo interpretation, and remote sensing. These form part of a degree program that offers both variety and specialization.

The Geography of California’s Ferns
The heavy rains of December have already resulted in strong new growth in our native ferns. Since ferns are often neglected by amateur native plant lovers and professional botanists alike, I give here a brief overview of our pteridophytes (i.e., ferns and allied plants), focusing on regional diversity rather than species identification. There are currently either 100 or101 pteridophyte species accepted as native to California, depending on whether the recently described

T he Mendocino County map is shown below, with Mendocino County outlined on the California reference map at the right. Mendocino County is outlined as you can see, around Ukiah, the county seat. W ith a land area of 3,510 square miles, the elevation runs from sea level at the Pacific ocean to 6,954 feet atop Anthony Peak to the northeast. To the north, the town of Laytonville holds the geographical distinction of being located at the highest elevation of any community located along U.S. 101 from Baja California to Canada, at 1,620 feet above sea level. I nland from 129 miles of magnificent coastline, the diverse environment is as varied as the terrain. W orld-class wine vineyards thrive in the valleys, while stands of redwoods and douglas fir tower down from the Pacific Coast Range. Diverse micro-climates benefit from having four seasons and 40 to 100 plus inches of annual rainfall, depending on the location, elevation, and of course ... the weather. W hile the Russian River flows south from above Ukiah, hundreds of miles of the Eel River and its' tributaries flow north to empty into the Pacific.

The Name and the Geography
California's history is so romantic and filled with legend that it is fitting that the region was named for a fictional island peopled by pagan Amazons, the setting of a 16th century Spanish book popular when that nation's explorers first came to this part of North America's Pacific Coast. Illustration I: Mirror Lakes, Yosemite Valley. Photograph by Carleton E. Watkins, 186_. Lot 4590. USZ62-46914. #47082. At first, "California" meant the peninsula on the west coast of modern Mexico now known as Baja California or Lower California, and the Spaniards believed that they had discovered an enormous island. Only as they ventured further inland did they find that "California" extended north to join the continent, and they named this extension "Alta California," the region that now forms the 31st state of the United States of America. Even in physical terms that state is a region of extremes. It stretches 825 miles from its northwest corner on the 42nd parallel on the Pacific Ocean to its southeast corner on the 32nd parallel at the junction of the Gila and Colorado Rivers. The winding shoreline contains 1,264 miles of beaches and harbors. And elevations run from 14,495 feet at the peak of Mount Whitney to 282 feet below sea level at Death Valley, with both of these landmarks little more than fifty miles apart in Inyo County. California's climates are as varied as her physical regions. There are heavy snows in the high mountain ranges, mild and temperate conditions along the coast, wide variations in temperature and humidity in the valleys, arid conditions and great temperature fluctuations in the desert. The geologic forces that shaped the state's terrain and dictated patterns of climate also created spots of extraordinary beauty like the geysers of Sonoma County and the grandeur of the Yosemite Valley.

HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF CALIFORNIA
Unless otherwise noted, these books are by secular publishers and many dealing with history assume that Native Americans inhabited California as long as ten thousand years ago. Bears, Pirates and Silver Lace Tales of Early California by Anne B. Fisher. These stories have become part of the legends of early California authentic tales of friendly Indians and Spaniards, and not so friendly pirates who pillaged along the coast; stories of bears who could never be killed, and soldiers who were afraid of a strange, spotted snake. There are stories of how California sea otters took silk and tea to Boston, how the first piano was brought to Monterey in 1843, and there was a party to celebrate it, and how two staunch little boys defied Southern sentiment and flew the flag at half-mast when they got the news that Abraham Lincoln had been shot twelve stories in all. Most of these stories originated on the Monterey Peninsula and were chosen from many by a class of fourth graders at the Del Monte School. The book was first published in 1944. Trade paper, 134 pages, illustrated with simple line drawings, some in color. Cat#BM. $5.95*

    Abbreviation:
CA The name California was first used in 1542 to designate the region by the Spanish expedition led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. It was probably derived from a popular Spanish novel published in 1510 in which a fictional island paradise named California was described. California is the third largest state in area after Alaska and Texas. The discovery of gold and the immigration in 1849 of thousands of "forty-niners" in search of the precious metal helped California's admission into the Union in 1850 as the 31st state. Today, California has the highest population of any state in the nation and is America's principal agricultural state. It is also the home of Hollywood, the center of America's movie and television industry.
Many visitors and new residents are attracted by California's outdoor way of life. The warm, dry climate permits outdoor recreation almost the whole year round. The High Sierra Nevada rises near the eastern border. Rocky cliffs and sandy beaches line the shore of the Pacific Ocean in the west. Thick redwood forests cover the Coast Ranges in the northwest. Dramatic deserts stretch across the southeast.
