HANDS-ON GEOGRAPHY Figure 1. Terrain Model This 3-D terrain map of part of North America, including the continental United States, is on display in the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The first of the geographical models to go into the lending rotation was a flat, cylindrical-projection map of the world, with vertical elevation exaggerated by a factor of 40. "With only a 12-mile spread between the lowest and highest points on an area 25,000 miles across, it’s necessary to exaggerate the data to show the land forms," said Mike Bailey, SDSC senior principal scientist and director of the lab. "Without the exaggeration, the map would look like a slightly bumpy piece of plywood." Bailey picked a flat projection for ease of handling by students; the spherical model of the Earth would be about the size and weight of a bowling ball. "A flat map also allows students to directly compare mountain ranges across the world," said Bailey, who has contributed other terrain maps to the museum.

WWII history bill awaits Davis' OK

OCEANSIDE A bill awaiting the governor's signature would help ensure that middle and high school children learn about World War II history through the experiences and stories of the state's combat veterans who lived it. Gov. Gray Davis is expected to sign the World War II Oral History Bill, which flew through the California legislature last week when it collected just one 'nay' vote as it passed both chambers, 74-1 in the Assembly and 39-0 in the Senate.
Assemblyman Mark Wyland, who last year co-authored legislation approved by the governor that provided $125,000 for an ongoing oral history project, spearheaded the legislation.

Air Force Officer Disciplined for Saying
Bush Allowed September 11 Attacks Hijacker Attended US military School By Jerry Isaacs
    21 June 2002
A US Air Force officer in California recently accused President Bush of deliberately allowing the September 11 terror attacks to take place. The officer has been relieved of his command and faces further discipline. The controversy surrounding Lt. Col. Steve Butler's letter to the editor, in which he affirmed that Bush did nothing to warn the American people because he "needed this war on terrorism," received scant coverage in the media. Universally ignored by the press, however, was that the officer was not merely expressing a personal opinion. He was in a position to have direct knowledge of contacts between the US military and some of the hijackers in the period before the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon. Lieutenant Colonel Butler, who wrote in a letter to the editor of the Monterey County Herald charging that "Bush knew about the impending attacks," was vice chancellor for student affairs at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California — a US military facility that one or more of the hijackers reportedly attended during the 1990s. In his May 26 letter to the newspaper, Butler responded to Bush supporters, who had written the paper opposing the congressional investigation into the September 11 events. He wrote:

SACRAMENTO, CA – A measure by Senator Wm. J. “Pete” Knight (R-Palmdale) that is designed to protect the California’s military mission readiness from urban growth pressures unanimously passed a key fiscal panel on Wednesday. This latest success marks another step forward for a measure that has enjoyed widespread support through the legislative process. Rapid urban growth around military bases puts pressure on the ability of military installations to carry out their assigned mission. Civilian activities such as the construction of new homes, schools, cellular phone and radio towers can inevitably conflict with military activities like aircraft and rocket testing, artillery bombardments, and troop transportation. Resulting legal and regulatory enforcement actions make it nearly impossible for the military to carry out its mission. If California bases are unable to perform their essential training and readiness activities they will likely be targeted in the next round of closures slated for 2005. “It is important to recognize how much California’s military training and testing programs contribute to our nation’s defense, and how much military spending contributes to our state’s economy,”

Originally published in Education Week As a military instructor, Lazaro Ramirez could order his students to do something and they'd jump. It wasn't so easy with his 3rd graders at Alamo Elementary School in McAllen, Texas, but he stuck with his new job. "You have to adjust your way of being and acting toward the kids," said Mr. Ramirez, who is now an assistant principal at a middle school across town. "They're here because they have to be here, not because they volunteered." A former Army sergeant major, Mr. Ramirez, 46, has made a smooth transition to a second career in education through Troops to Teachers. The program, launched by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1994, helps personnel cut loose by the military's post-Cold War "drawdown" land teaching jobs. In the past four years, some 3,000 people from all branches of the armed services and the Coast Guard have found jobs as teachers, primarily in the 20 states with the most military bases. Districts in California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia have hired hundreds of veterans for their classrooms. With the program scheduled to end next fall, recruitment officers are eager to spread the good word about Troops to Teachers. A study commissioned by the Washington state recruitment office calls it a "rich source" of sought-after teachers: The recruits are much more likely than traditional applicants to be male, members of minority groups, willing to work in hard-to-staff urban and rural schools, and qualified to teach mathematics, science, and special education.
