Country Background Geography Cambodia has a land area of 181,035 square kilometers in the southwestern part of the Indochina peninsula, about 20% of which is used for agriculture. It lies completely within the tropics with its southernmost points slightly more than 10 o above the Equator. The country's capital city is Phnom Penh. International borders are shared with Thailand and the Lao People's Democratic Republic on the west and on the north, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on the east and the southeast. The country is bounded on the southwest by the Gulf of Thailand. In comparison with its neighbors, Cambodia is a geographically compact country administratively composed of 20 provinces, three of which have relatively short maritime boundaries, 3 municipalities, 172 districts, 1,547 communes. The country has a coastline of 435 km and extensive mangrove stands, some of which are relatively undisturbed. The dominant features of the Cambodian landscape are the large, almost centrally located

GoCambodia WHY WE CHOOSE AN-24=SECURITY OFFERS ANTONOV-24 is a Russian medium size passenger aircraft, which was manufactured in the former Soviet Union. It was invented by a group of Russian engineers in 1950s under the management and leadership of Mr. ANTONOV, the inventor. Each AN-24 propeller engine, VICHENKO A.I.24, has 2,55 HP to lift the load and its body weights. In fact, its technical concept and architectural structure is quite similar to FOKKER-27, which produced in Pays-Bas, Holland. For the modernization purpose and the improvement of passenger air transportation services, AN-24 was the substitution for LISONOV-2 and ILYOUSHIN-14, which had used piston engines. It was launched for the test flight using the new turbo Propulseour engines crossing the southern area of the Soviet Union to Anta Tic Sea and the result was a technical and operable success. In the winter of 1962, AEROFLOT, the Soviet national airlines decided to use Antonov-24 with its capacity of 30 passengers only. Later the Russian specialists modified its techniques to make it possible to carry 50 passengers and five crews: two pilots, one mechanic one-radio operator and one air route guider. Khmer Rouge is victor of civil war and occupies Phnom Penh; reign of terror kills 1.5 million in next four years
Goes into hiding after Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia Dies April 15 in Cambodian jungle "We were like babies learning to walk," he said of his "mistakes" Cambodia's ruthless dictator cheated justice, dying before he could answer for the atrocities committed during his unrelenting quest to create a rural Utopia By DAVID CHANDLER On April 17, 1998, barely 500 m inside Cambodia from Thailand, a frail, 73-year-old former dictatorknown by his nom de guerre, Pol Potwas cremated under a pile of rubbish and rubber tires. He had died two days earlier in a two-room hut, held prisoner by former colleagues who had accused him of betraying the revolutionary movement he had once led. It was an ignominious end for a man who inscribed a merciless agenda on the psyche of two generations of Cambodians. Between 1975 and 1979, Pol Pot presided over a communist regime known as Democratic Kampuchea. His harsh, utopian policies, derived in part from Maoist China, drove an estimated 1.5 million Cambodiansor one in fiveto their deaths from malnutrition, illness or overwork. At least 200,000 more were executed as enemies of the state. The ratio of deaths to population made the Cambodian revolution the most murderous in a century of revolutions.

Rachel's PhD examines Cambodian genocide sites as sites of founding trauma for the modern Cambodian nation. The main genocide museum and the largest genocide memorial in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, are interrogated in the context of discourses of Cambodian sovereignty, 'national reconciliation' and the consequences of military and humanitarian interventions in Cambodia. An examination of the role of the Vietnamese in Cambodia in the post-1979 period, contemporary calls for memory and accountability via a trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders (with international assistance), and cultural petitions of Cambodia’s King Sihanouk also inform the discussion. Controversial and insistent “sites of memory” of the Cambodian genocide also exist outside its sovereign borders. Internationalised representations of Cambodia’s Democratic Kampuchea (or “Pol Pot”) period in mass media, touristic, humanitarian and popular mediums are thus also of interest. To whose memory do these transnational memorialisations speak? Do these memorialisations further sacralise or displace cultural responses arising from within the resident Cambodian society? Specific examples discussed include: the 1984 film
