    Phnom Penh
Photo: Boats near Phnom Penh Phnom Penh is situated at the confluence of the Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers with the Mekong. It was founded as a small monastery in by the rich Khmer woman Penh , after she had found four Buddha statues in a tree trunk on the banks of the Mekong. She set up the monastery on a hill near the bank of the Mekong. The Cambodian word for hill is Phnom . Therefore the name of the town correctly translates as Hill of Penh Rather significantly Phnom Penh's history is founded on an episode, in which the Buddhist religion played a part, contrary to the Khmer capital of that time, Angkor , which was shaped, and literally so, by Hinduism . Nevertheless, Buddhism had, since the beginning of the 13th century, become the dominant religion. (In Southeast Asia both religions are entwined to a much higher degree than first appears to be the case. For instance, numerous Buddhist temples in Thailand house altars of Hindu deities , especially Brahma, and the details of the royal ploughing ceremony in Bangkok are determined by Brahman, not Buddhist, palace priests... just like Thai coronation modalities).

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Following a five-year struggle, communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh in 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns; over 1 million displaced people died from execution or enforced hardships. A 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside and touched off 13 years of fighting. UN-sponsored elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of normalcy, as did the rapid diminishment of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1990s. A coalition government, formed after national elections in 1998, brought renewed political stability and the surrender of remaining Khmer Rouge forces. 'Floating' Units at SOAS available for KCL Geographers
Undergraduate geographers at KCL have the unique advantage of open access to the extraordinary range of undergraduate course units provided by SOAS, as occasional 'floating' units within their degree package, because of the Geography merger agreement between these two universities. Students are allowed to take floaters (non-geography courses) in their second and third years, and these can be from KCL or SOAS (courses from other London University Geography departments are also available, but not on an open basis as there are financial considerations involved). The SOAS-based courses offer you the exciting opportunity to complement your geography studies with a component of Asian or African studies in another discipline (or a language).
If you are interested in pursuing a SOAS floater option you are advised to check for further details on it via the SOAS website ( http://www.soas.ac.uk/ ) and contact the SOAS department which teaches it to check on its availability and time-tabling. The faculty administrators for the relevant disciplinary departments should be able to assist, and/or the undergraduate tutor for that department. You may also like to contact the individual teacher of the course for further information. The joint honours admissions tutors for SOAS/KCL degrees in the Geography Department may also be able to offer advice.
The lists below show first a selection of courses which have been chosen by geography students in the recent past, and then others of potential interest by discipline.
