History of Cambodia The history of Cambodia begins many centuries ago with the Kingdom of Funan . The early early records of the Chinese travellers tell of a great kingdom where the king rides on an elephant The early period of the Khmers is known as the Pre-Angkor period. The Chinese made records of Funan , which was established in the first century AD. Around the first or second century AD, India made contact with Southeast Asia The last king of Funan was Rudravarman After period of the Funan kingdom, the Chinese refer to the kingdom of Zhenla . The northernmost region of Zhenla extended as far as Wat Phu , which is in the south of present-day Laos In the 6th century, King Bhavavarman I, a prince of Funan, married a royal princess of Zhenla, and thus became the ruler of Zhenla. Archeological Evidence The Sanskrit stele of Vo Canh was discovered in Champa , now Vietnam , and is from the early second half of the third century (200-250 AD). This is the earliest inscription which reflects the spread of Indian culture throughout Southeast Asia.

From Sideshow To Genocide: The Khmer Rouge Years On April 17, 1975, thousands of Phnom Penh residents celebrated in the streets as victorious Khmer Rouge troops entered the capitol. This joyous celebration, however, was not because the people of Phnom Penh were supporters of the Khmer Rouge; instead, they felt great relief that the five-year civil war had now come to an end. For the first several hours of that sunny morning it didn't matter which side you were on - Cambodia was finally at peace. This morning revealed a moment of hope. But hope quickly turned to fear as residents noticed that the Khmer Rouge troops weren't celebrating with them. Embittered and toughened after years of brutal civil war and American bombing, the Khmer Rouge marched the boulevards of Phnom Penh with icy stares carved into their faces. The troops soon began to order people to abandon their homes and leave Phnom Penh. By mid-afternoon hundreds of thousands of people were on the move. "The Americans are going to bomb the city!" was the answer given to residents if they asked why they had to leave Phnom Penh. No exceptions were made - all residents, young and old, had to evacuate as quickly as possible. As the Khmer Rouge knew well, there were no American plans to attack the city. The deception was a ploy to get people into the countryside, away from the urban confines of the city. The Khmer Rouge believed that cities were living and breathing tools of capitalism in their own right - KR cadres referred to Phnom Penh as "the great prostitute of the Mekong." (Chandler

1 Jan 2001 Dear Khmer Institute: It was with more than a little dismay that I read yet another article in which Ms. Ung has perhaps invited more discussion about her book. In a CNN internet-only piece in the Book News section of the website (30 DEC 2000), Ms. Ung continues her mission to "explain" the rationale behind her publication. Yet, rather than clarifying and perhaps mollifying any of the concerns that have been raised about certain aspects of her book, she is apparently content with adding even more fuel to an already roaring fire. In the piece, she stated that one of the reasons for telling the story, she says, was to educate others, especially her two American nieces, Victoria, 15, and Maria, 19. "I've watched them grow up and study Russian history and American history," Loung says, "and they didn't know any Cambodian history. They didn't understand us. They're not going to get the story anywhere else and I just wanted them to know." Upon reading that I thought to myself, "Oh really Ms. Ung?" ... It is in her book that she tells how she and her brotherss and sisters would study Chinese, French, ... and THEN Khmer at home on the kitchen table, not to mention family members watching Chinese martial arts movies, admiring and flaunting physical "Chinese" attributes - in an apparent disparaging contrast to her perception of "Khmer" physiology, spending time swigging down American Coca-Cola, and enjoying special breakfasts of French bread and iced coffee, etc., etc.
