    Water and Culture
by Serena Williams , Kribi, Cameroon One interesting reflection of the importance of water in Kribi is manifested in cosmological/spiritual beliefs that many local peoples hold. Some of the local ethnic groups of the area are the Pygmy (migrants from the Eastern region) Batanga, Mabea (Mabi) and Ngoumba (Ngumba). Local peoples who subscribe to Christian doctrines often are baptized in rivers through full body immersion. Catholics use sprinkles of water to conduct the same or similar rites of passage. Yet more traditional cultural values reveal the use of water as a tool of revelation. Or as one woman said, "If you want to know the truth, you go to the water." A story was told that an older man was found dead one day in the house of his younger wife (he had two). Local people believed that the younger wife, who was not from the same ethnic group as the husband or the first wife, had intended to inherit all possessions by killing the husband. Claiming innocence, both women were taken to the river, where a large crowd of witnesses was gathered. They were thrown bodily into the river, with the understanding that coming out dry proved their innocence. Indeed, both women passed the test, and the husband was proclaimed dead from natural causes. Another use of water in culture is through purification. For example, unlike the purification symbolized by the Western tradition of baptism, bathing and cleansing takes place in the traditional system when families are believed to be cursed. If relatives are lost through bloody deaths, accidents, or if many family members are killed or die in a short period of time, the surviving relatives are purified with water and leaves to rid them of the curse that has overtaken their family.

cameroon, a country that the Consortium itself admits does not have the resourcesto enforce environmental protection measures. Indigenous People and culture.
    http://theearthcenter.com/chad.html
Oil Exploited, Nature Disturbed by Rachel Naba
As modern technology grows, our need to consume natural resources increases. As existing resources are exploited and drained, the need for new resources becomes somewhat of an emergency. New lands are tested and surveyed, and any country that is found to have exploitable resources becomes very interesting to foreign governments and companies. Chad, a "poor" African country, has discovered oil in its lands, and foreign oil companies have seized the opportunity to exploit it. A Consortium consisting of Exxon, Shell and Elf have formed a 3.5 billion dollar oil project to collect, manage, and sell Chad's oil. They will build 300 oil wells in three fields in the Doba Basin of Southern Chad and transport it through 1070 kilometers (663 miles) of pipeline through Cameroon to the Atlantic Ocean for export. The pipeline will disturb the Deng Deng forest (semideciduous) and the Atlantic Littoral Forest (a tropical rainforest which is one of the most undisturbed in the world), will cross major rivers, bother wild and plant life, affect the ecosystem and health of the land, and disturb indigenous people, their lives and their farmlands. Oil spills or accidents will be devastating. The World Bank will financially support the "Chad Export Project". Chad and Cameroon have applied for over $115 million in loans (for equity investments, which do not necessarily guarantee profits), and the pipeline companies created for the project depend on the bank's support. Profits for the two host countries estimate at $1.3 billion (not even half of the project's total construction costs!) over the twenty-five to thirty year life-span of the project, and will be revenue from royalties, taxes, and transportation fees. The bulk of the profit will benefit the foreign oil companies.

    Teacher Workshops
Kengmo shows how to find our roots through traditional African dance forms that are based on life experience. Using a variety of authentic musical instruments from Central Africa, stories, as well as dance and positive messages, Kengmo builds lasting bridges between the wisdom and philosophies of his Elders. He brings out similarities and energizes the good within every participant throughout each event. Kengmo sees every teacher as a community leader because students in each classroom form a micro community with its own unique strengths, weaknesses and goals. Community leaders anywhere in the world can have issues and weaknesses that can hamper their ability to collaborate, understand, communicate or lead. A proverb of Kengmo’s elders says: “In life, there comes a time where even the most loving parent cannot take care of their own beloved children if they cannot take care of themselves”. Kengmo’s workshops offer a powerful venue where teachers can come to take care of themselves. A teacher deserves as much or even more attention than the students to maintain a positive vision and stay on the right track.
