Canadian Culture I was recently asked about Canadian Culture - things people would want to know before visiting Canada. Simple enough question if you come from a country with a cultural history, but what about Canada? Italy, Germany, Japan, India, and many other countries all have well defined cultures steeped in hundreds if not thousands of years of traditions, customs and language. For most adults, just mentioning Chinese culture brings to mind any number of mental images, which clearly define for the person what Chinese culture means to them. But what about Canadian Culture? Our original settlers still maintain their culture as they have known it for over 5,000 years, but the

The Canadian Aviation Museum Digital Archives consists of mostly black and white images dating from the earliest days of heavier-than-air flight to the present day. The collection is especially rich in photographs dating from the 1930s and 1940s, and includes many rare and vivid images of the early bush planes and the aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps in the 1910s.
Canada Science and Technology Museum
CN Images of Canada Gallery The Canada Science and Technology Museum/Canadian National (CSTM/CN) photograph collection contains about 750 000 images which date from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid 1980s. Originally held by the Public Affairs Department of Canadian National, at the company's headquarters in Montréal, these images record the history and activities of CN and its predecessor companies, including the Canadian Northern, Intercolonial and Grand Trunk railways. This collection documents a rapidly developing Canada, as seen from a great variety of social perspectives wilderness trekking, cities rising from the empty prairie, travel by land and by sea, industries in the making, Canadians marching to war, and the opening up of northern mineral wealth, to name just a few recording a unique portrait of Canada and Canadians over time and across North America. The CN Images of Canada Gallery contains more than 1000 digitized images from this collection - a number that will continue to grow in the years to come. Canadian Culture at Home and Abroad
Long recognized for its natural beauty and vast territory, Canada is increasingly being recognized internationally for artistic and cultural achievements created right here at home. But how does one define Canadian culture? Well, Canadian cultural expression can be described in terms of the television shows and movies we watch and produce, the radio programs and music we broadcast and enjoy, as well as the books, magazines and newspapers that we publish and read. Through pictures, sounds and words, these communicate a uniquely Canadian perspective. To learn more about Canadian culture at home and abroad, click on the link in the menu to the right. Canadian Culture on the World Stage
Projecting Canadian culture around the world is one of the pillars of Canada's foreign policy. Canadian artists convey a sense of our values and interests through writing, music, dance, theatre and the visual arts. Their work adds depth and mutual appreciation to our international relations. The support of the Department helps Canadian artists showcase our culture abroad, and allows both artists and the public to benefit from cultural exchanges, international marketing assistance, and project development grants and training. The examples below are but a sample of the vast number of Canadian artists and cultural groups performing or staging their productions abroad in the coming months. 2003 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award

A few things people associate with Canada are: © RCMP/GRC Perhaps the most famous of our national icons is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (AKA: RCMP, The Mounties, Members, and Police). These men and women form our national police force and are found in every province and territory across the country. With a mandate to serve and protect, these well-trained peace officers are able to handle everything from providing directions to solving complex murders. The RCMP officer you see on postcards dressed in red astride a black stallion is not something you will see every day, in fact the dress uniform is reserved for very special occasions such as formal guard duty for heads of state or other political dignitaries. The red surge uniform is also worn when the officers form part of an honour brigade at a wedding, ceremonial escorts, parades, at the opening of parliament or at a funeral. You will also see officers in full dress uniform when they perform their Musical Ride.

Directory of Canadian Culture Collections
Introduction
The largest non-medical collections in Canada contain mycelial fungi and yeasts. An analysis of fungal collections held in Canada revealed that although the number of isolates was large, the diversity of the major collections was small (Proceedings Nova Scotia Institute of Science 39:79-98, 1989). Only when the species held in the working collections are included could Canada be said to have an adequate resource of fungi. This conclusion can be fairly applied to the other types of organisms surveyed. This listing of Canadian Culture Collections is identical in format to that done in 1986. An attempt has been made to both re-survey those contacted in 1986 and identify any new collections that might have emerged. Much of the data analysis in the 1986 Directory still applies. The major collections are still extant and have been strengthened particularly in terms of electronic information storage. It is possible to purchase a disc from the Nova Scotia Institute of Science containing information on most fungal cultures held in Canada. A somewhat disquieting fact is that there appears to have been a real decline in the number of working collections over the intervening years. Directory of Canadian Culture Collections, 1986. A report prepared for the National Biotechnology Advisory Committee. Communications Branch, Industry Canada, Ottawa, Ontario. K1A 1A1.
