CANADIAN CARDIOVASCULAR SOCIETY 1998 CONSENSUS CONFERENCE ON THE PREVENTION OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES: THE ROLE OF THECARDIOVASCULAR SPECIALIST
Cardiovascular diseases in ethnic groups Sonia Anand MD, Salim Yusuf MD Throughout the world and within Canada, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality varies substantially by geographic region, sex and ethnic origin (1). An ethnic group refers to a population that shares common cultural characteristics, such as language, religion and diet. Therefore, the concept of ethnicity relies more on a shared cultural definition of identity than solely on biological similarity. ETHNIC GROUPS IN CANADA Ethnicity research is particularly relevant in a country such as Canada, given that non-Canadian-born individuals constitute 17.4% of the Canadian population (2). The sources of immigration to Canada have changed markedly during the past century, and in 1996 people of European origin accounted for 47% of the total immigrant population. Traditionally, European-born immigrants came from the United Kingdom, Germany or Italy, whereas now the majority come from Eastern European countries. The fastest growing group of new immigrants in Canada is from Asia (31% in 1996), and nearly a quarter of all recent immigrants are from China and India. The third-largest immigrant group in Canada is from Central and South America. MORTALITY PATTERNS IN SELECTED ETHNIC POPULATIONS IN CANADA

Nikolaos I. Liodakis' Ph.D. dissertation was a quantitative analysis of the class, gender and nativity earnings differentials within selected ethnic and "visible" groups in Canada, using 1996 Canadian Census data . His research has revealed that the class and gender earnings differentials within ethnic groups, are greater than the differentials among them, when ethnic groups are conceptualized as homogeneous, monolithic and static entities (as done by the ethnic perspective). His research calls for a more innovative examination of social inequality in Canada, the re-conceptualization of ethnicity and a more critical analysis of its interconnections with class and gender. He is also interested in the educational attainment class and gender differentials within foreign-born and native-born members of ethnic groups.

New Forum:
on the Canadian Constitution
After the success of our first public policy Forum on “ Peace and Security on Eastern Mediterranean ” earlier in April at SFU's Downtown Campus, our BC Congress started work on a second one. Its purpose: «To organize and co-host an open, televised forum on Canadian Unity as seen from the West, and in particular, the ethnic communities of the West.» The Forum, to take place in mid-February '98, will focus on the national question involving Quebec and is aimed at stirring a constructive debate in order to keep Canada united. It will be taped for TV and aired across Canada next year. This “ Unity Forum ” is hoped to provide discussion and debate among Canadians, something that so far has been generated and debated only in Eastern Canada. Twenty six people from eight ethnic groups responded to our call. Among them, Brian Murphy , Vancouver TV producer and director, Andre Gerolymatos , Chair of Hellenic Studies at SFU , and Vancouver Sun journalist, Ian Mulgrew , who, like last April, will again be the moderator.

All through school, our history teachers have told us about the horrors of the Holocaust and the atrocities of the World Wars. Our country's museums are filled with exhibits to remember these events. Our own Senate even held hearings on a new Holocaust memorial gallery. Although the Holocaust is a gross violation of human rights, why is it the only act of genocide that we ever seem to focus on? We all know Schindler's List , but do we know about the Cambodian killing fields? In late January, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien toured Central Europe and shed tears while visiting the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz and hearing the stories of a survivor. Earlier in his trip, he laid a wreath at a new memorial to the 1930s famine-genocide in Ukraine. The Soviet dictatorship of Joseph Stalin withheld grain and food to starve Ukrainian farmers. More than seven million people died. But Chrétien declined an offer to tour the former concentration camps in that country, where millions were tortured and killed.

    Introduction
Did you already know that the first German-speaking pioneers settled in Canada more than 300 years ago ... ...that in the year 1788 Governor Dorchester named the four districts of Upper Canada Lunenburg Mecklenburg Nassau and Hesse , that two of the Fathers of Confederation were of German origin, and that the Germans are after the British and French the third oldest and third largest European ethnic group in Canada? Did you ever wonder why so little is known about the considerable German contribution to the development of Canada and why the Germans as an active, articulate ethnic group are hardly recognizable in Canada, why in comparison with other ethno-cultural groups they play only a minimal role in Canada's public life? Until a few decades ago such lack of knowledge regarding the history and culture of one's own country could perhaps still be excused by referring to customary apathy, since for a long time Canadians paid no attention to their own history and were unsure of their own identity. Today, this evasion from civic and cultural responsibility is no longer possible. For, since the Canadian federal government set its multicultural model off from the "melting pot" concept of the United States, the individual ethnic groups have not only been given the right, but even the duty to add their contribution to the colorful and multi-layered mosaic of Canadian culture.
