The Golden Jubilee - A Canadian Celebration
February 6, 1952, the Accession Day of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is an important day in Canadian history. On that date, Canada began a very special and connected relationship with its new Queen. Our nation, however, welcomed more than its Queen. Our country welcomed the beginning of an era replete with accomplishments on every level - from individual achievements, to some of our nation's greatest changes. Her Majesty The Queen's Golden Jubilee is a time to look back and reflect on her distinguished 50 years as Queen of Canada, and to honour the accomplishments during her reign. Canadians are invited by Royal Proclamation to celebrate in tandem Her Majesty's 50 th year as Queen of Canada, and all that Canada has become during that time. Indeed, the year 2002 is "The Queen's Golden Jubilee: A Canadian Celebration."
The Canadian Crown - A Brief Background
Under our system of constitutional monarchy, the Queen is our Head of State: She represents the people as citizens, as opposed to a head of government, who represents the people as voters. In Canada, the Queen is represented by the offices of the Governor General (in federal matters) and the ten Lieutenant Governors (in provincial affairs). These distinguished Canadians serve as spokespersons for the Queen.

This document is an attempt to bring various published sources together to present a timeline about Canadian Coins. I have limited it to circulating and collector coins of the Province of Canada (1841-1867), and the Dominion of Canada (1867-present). I have excluded other pre-confederation coins and tokens (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, etc.). References are numbered in [brackets], which can be found at the end of this document. A number after the dot gives the page in the source. Last updated: 2003 March 3. 1912-end

  • Inspector-General for the Province of Canada, Francis Hincks, introduces a bill in Parliament, to amend the Currency Act of 1841, giving the Governor General the power to have coins struck for circulation in Canada. [306.133] [571.26]

Opening Remarks by
Sir Albert Henry George Grey, 4th Earl Grey
Governor General of Canada
Canadian Forestry Convention
January 10, 1906 Sir Wilfred Laurier, ladies and gentlemen, it is my priviledge to open this forestry convention which has met on the invitation of the Prime Minister, to consider, before its too late, questions of the highest importance to the future well being of the Dominion. I do not propose to anticipate with more than a very few remarks of my own the addresses of the distinguished gentlemen who have been requested to place the results of their experience and their counsels at the disposal of those who form the opinion and make the laws of the Dominion. I will only say that although my experience of Canada has been comparatively short, it has yet been sufficient to impress upon me the urgent desirability of focusing the best brains of the Dominion on the immediate consideration of what shall be done with regard to our forests in order to protect the soil on which the maintenance of our agricultural prosperity depends. I have seen myself in India, in Asia Minor, in Greece and in Italy, extensive tracts of territory once inhabited by a strenuous, prosperous, numerous population, and now reduced to the misery of a barren desolation through the unregulated deforestation of their lands by a blind and selfish generation who had no regard for posterity, and no eyes for anything but their own immediate requirements.

Champlain in Huronia

History Since the founding of The Champlain Society in 1905 by Sir Edmund Walker, the Society has published over 90 of the most important volumes in Canadian history. These volumes have included the broadest variety of journals, diaries, letters, documents and translations. From major players and significant events to lesser-known but fascinating characters and happenings, Canada's development is chronicled in the pages of Champlain Society volumes. From its first volume - a translation of Marc Lescarbot's History of New France - the Society has published exploration history ranging from David Thompson's Narratives to Sir John Franklin's First Arctic Land Expedition; aboriginal history such as Lafitau's Customs of the American Indians; wartime history such as William Wood's The Canadian War of 1812 and Barbara M. Wilson's Ontario and the First World War; political history including two volumes of Lord Minto's Canadian Papers; and social history such as The Eldon House Diaries. Every aspect of Canada's development has been touched upon - from some of the earliest exploration to the early years of the 20th century. In addition to the many volumes published exclusively by The Champlain Society, the Society co-published 12 volumes with The Hudson's Bay Company Record Society. Also, in a special arrangement with the Province of Ontario, 16 volumes have been published that are of notable significance to Ontario. From its inception, The Champlain Society has been held in the highest regard by the finest scholars in Canadian history. These scholars have provided top editorial expertise and learned introductions throughout the Society's history. The high esteem in which The Champlain Society is held also means that the Council of the Society includes some of the country's finest scholars and community leaders who guide and advise the Society. The high quality of Champlain Society volumes is evidence of the best bookbinding produced in Canada. These attractive red, cloth-wrapped editions are dramatically enhanced with gilt lettering and the unique Champlain Society crest on the spine. In addition, the latest volumes have an attractive imprint crest on the face cover.
