Canada’s Media Monopoly One perspective is enough, says CanWest By James Winter A dispute between Canada’s largest media company and its journalists has put media concentration on the political agenda as seldom before. In January, organizations representing journalists across Canada called for a parliamentary inquiry into media concentration, especially at CanWest Global Communications. The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) and the Quebec Federation of Professional Journalists (QFPJ) denounced actions of the media giant as "a disturbing pattern of censorship and repression of dissenting views." CAJ vice president Paul Schneidereit said the federal government needs to examine the issue of media ownership concentration. "We feel it’s time for the elected officials of this country to be looking at what the repercussions [of media concentration] are for the general public," he said. The Quebec provincial government has said it might introduce legislation to force "a plurality of opinion" and diverse sources of information, according to culture minister Diane Lemieux. The Newspaper Guild of Canada demanded that CanWest "immediately cease its attack on divergent opinions." The Guildthe largest journalists’ union in North Americacalled in February for the Winnipeg-based media conglomerate to adopt principles that would respect the editorial autonomy of each paper and its columnists, and allow editors, rather than corporate headquarters, to make news judgments.

The purpose of MediaStudies.com is to help advance research and education in media studies and critical thinking. The site serves as a hub - providing links to global news outlets educational guidelines and other resources for media educators, students, researchers, and the wider community. New sites are featured periodically. Suggestions for new links are welcome by email or at the address below. Vancouver, April, '03 Tr an sl a ... e Feature Sites k.i.s.s. of the panopticon from the New Media Literacy Project, University of Washington School of Communication. Given the problems often associated with the jargon of cultural studies and critical theory, 'k.i.s.s.' (keep it simple, stupid) is designed to make key concepts understandable. Questions include: " does cultural theory suck," and " what is new media literacy?" k.i.s.s. includes a bibliography and comprehensive subject and author index, including: Althusser, Baudrillard, Jameson, and McLuhan. Subjects include: Critical theory, globalization, hyper-reality, identity, mass consumption, and postmodernism. "One of the cool things you might realize from this site (if you hadn't already done so) is that a lot of the postmodern European intellectual stuff that sounded just plain crazy a few years ago is now actually starting to make sense in the age of the Internet. Baudrillard's and Eco's ideas on hyperreality, just to grab one example, suddenly seem a little more real and a lot clearer within the computer-mediated realm of hypertext and hyperlinks. At the same time, we need to understand the older paradigms of mass media and society (Marx and all that lot) before we can really get a grip on the "new" stuff. "

Week of March 31, 2003 Archives The Anatomy of Buzz
By Emanuel Rosen When you market, Observe the six rules about ads and buzz
  • Keep it simple.
  • Start measuring buzz.
  • Listen to the buzz.
Get connected, says Rosen. To whom do they listen? Who do they consider validators of the products or services you offer? Should you be going after expert hubs or social hubs? What are the networks that your customers are connected to? The bottom line of this book is that our world is a world of networks. At the top of the networks are those who influence those who are a part of the networks. If nothing else, the last chapter of the book is worth its price
  • Am I offering a quality product or service?
  • Does my product enhance the lives of people who use it?
  • Am I offering something new?
