Odds and Ends
By Devin D. O'Leary Dateline: South Korea On the plus side, they've got nowhere to go but up. Kuwait's national ice hockey team broke into the record books by giving up an astonishing 79 goals in just two games early last week at the Winter Asian Games in Yongpyong, South Korea. On Sunday, Kuwait lost to China 44-1. On Monday, the team followed it up with a 35-0 shutout against Japan. Although Kuwaiti coach Bruce Smitha Canadian nationaldescribed the loss to Japan as "the longest game of my life," player Al-Ajmi Salem did manage to score the first goal ever by any Arab country in an international hockey match during Sunday's loss to China. "It was a great moment for Kuwait hockey in an otherwise dark day," said Smith.
Dateline: Germany A German court ruled last Tuesday that two male slave workers forced into labor by the Nazis during World War II were, indeed, eligible for government pensions. Previously, higher German courts had said that without proper pension contributions being made, no pension could be paid out. In their groundbreaking decision, the Düsseldorf Court for Social Issues ruled that "under the Nazi regime of terror, these criteria would be impossible." The judgment could open the way for other forced laborers to apply for pension payments for the period when they worked as slaves.
Dateline: Canada In what was surely a well-planned tribute to the Three Stooges, three suspects made one of the shortest breaks for freedom as they were led from a police van to a court appearance in Ontario last Monday. The trio's spontaneous escape attempt ended a few seconds later when, forgetting they were shackled together, the men passed on either side of a lamp post. The three suspects collided in a comic heap and were quickly subdued by police.

Over the past few months, a number of samples have crossed the kitchen table of World of Beer Central but have for one reason or another escaped mention on this page. Here are some of the highlights: Flens Pilsner (from the Flensburger Brauerie of Germany): Light, bright gold with a dense gold head and a lightly sweetish, cereally nose, this fresh-tasting lager reminds me more of a commercial Scandinavian lager than a German pilsner perhaps not surprisingly because Flensburg, where the brewery is located, is about as far north in Germany as you can get. The start is lightly sweet but still crisp, while the body brings forth a nicely balanced taste of clean malt and lightly woody, faintly green hops leading to a dry and refreshing finish. A quencher, but not a complex or particularly intriguing brew. Saku Estonian Porter (a 6.6% ABV porter from the Saku Brewery of Estonia): Amber in colour, this bottom-fermented porter has a sweet and milk chocolaty nose and a lightly spicy (nutmeg) start. The body is creamy and sweetish, with chocolate notes and a bit of cinnamon. A little weak coffee kicks in at the finish, leaving this with a delicate character unlike the other Eastern European Porters I have sampled. An enjoyable beer in an underappreciated style.

A personal dispute in rural Papua New Guinea culminated with one angry man tearing out the eyes, testicles and heart of his neighbor and eating them. Villagers at the Ono Works camp east of Madang watched in horror as Moropia Silkapi, 35, attacked the body of Yakamup Makatu, 55, and cannibalized the choice bits. Apparently the two villagers began arguing earlier in the day. Things reached a fever pitch when Makatu's house burned to the ground. Then the cannibalism began. "Silkapi caught Makatu and smashed his head with a rock, killing him. He then ate him," explained Police Superintendent Ben Simanjon. Silkapi was chased into the bush by villagers and tied to a tree to await police. Unfortunately, Makatu's angry relatives arrived first, killing the hot-headed cannibal. Three of the relatives were arrested.

Independent Living
Odds and Ends 125. To identify keys, put a piece of brightly colored tape, which can be easily seen or felt, around the key. Similarly, put a colored plastic hood (available from hardware and department stores) over the key top. Most places which copy keys have them available in a wide variety of colors. 126. Each household item should have a specific place and should be returned there immediately after use. Don't just drop something! That way you won't have to spend a lot of time looking for it when it is next needed. Encourage other family members to also return items to their proper place. After all, organization makes it easier for everyone to find things! 127. It is not necessary to rearrange furniture in a special way in your home, but some changes may be helpful. For example, a coffee table with sharp edges may be moved out of the main circulation area. Also, remember to keep doors, closet doors, and cupboard doors all the way open or all the way shut. Half open doors are dangerous! 128. Stairs can be hazardous! Mark the leading edge of each step with a paint or non-skid material of a color which contrasts with the stairs themselves. Paint the handrail in a bright contrasting color. It should extend past the top and bottom steps as a guide to know where the steps begin. Use a contrasting color and/or a different texture floor material, such as carpet, on the top and bottom landings.

NAACP Plans Future Boycotts Now that the St. Andrew’s Cross has come down from atop the capitol in South Carolina, the NAACP, while not letting up in South Carolina, has set its sights on other Southern states. Specifically, the states of Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, that have incorporated Confederate symbols in their state flags, are next in line for boycotts and political pressure. We encourage chapters in these states to gear up for a heated struggle, and to take to heart the lessons taught to the people of South Carolina by their elected Republican leaders and Chambers of Commerce. You might want to visit the SC League of the South website: www.palmetto.org. Let’s get out and put pressure on the politicos and also enlist the support of small businessmen. Let us hope and pray that the ‘law of unintended consequences’ attends the NAACP boycott in other states besides South Carolina. An e-mail correspondent commented on the fact that there is a flip side to the ‘offensive symbol’ argument which the NAACP uses to justify its actions. If the flag offends so many blacks that the government shouldn't display it, isn’t it also true that Lincoln’s image on the five dollar bill offends many Southerners, ‘representing the murders of 624,000 on the North American continent’? Not Enough Work to Go Around ‘If those stimulants to exertion which arise from the wants of the body, were removed from the mass of mankind, we have much reason to think that they would be sunk to the level of brutes from a deficiency of excitements, than that they would be raised to the level of philosophers by the possession of leisure.’

A full stack of literary odds and ends Sunday, September 10, 2000 By Bob Hoover , Post-Gazette Book Editor Catching up on the news: Keely Bowers, 31, who teaches creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh and Community College of Allegheny County, is this year's winner of the Nelson Algren Award for Short Fiction presented by the Chicago Tribune. Bowers' story "A Practice Life" won the $5,000 honor in a field of 758 entries. The story will be published this month in the Tribune, which began the competition in 1986 in memory of the popular novelist. A graduate of Pitt's writing program, Bowers has published stories in the Dickinson Review and Creative Nonfiction. She's currently at work on a novel. "This story went through so much rewriting and different endings," Bowers said. "After I submitted it, I thought of making more changes." Bowers is a former student of Pitt writing professor Chuck Kinder, who also taught Michael Chabon in the 1980s.
The James Laughlin Award for Poetry this year went to Liz Waldner for her second collection, "A Point Is That Which Has No Part." Granted by the Academy of American Poets, the prize is $5,000. Among the three judges was Lynn Emanuel, poet and head of Pitt's Creative Writing program.

Various, A Very Special Christmas Live
An all-star concert recorded in Washington DC, one of a series of benefits for the Special Olympics. Since most of the obvious Yuletide standards had turned up on earlier Very Special albums, the track list leans heavily on Fifties and Sixties rockers ("Rockin' Round The Christmas Tree," sung by Mary J. Blige with a casual authority that blows the rest of the vocalists away). But there's a fair amount of variety: Vanessa Williams delivers a respectable nightclub jazz take on "What Child Is This?"; Run-DMC serves up their "Christmas In Hollis" (originally written for a previous benefit album).
