ANNOUNCEMENT - May 27, 2001
Canadian Technology Companies Align to Offer Integrated Solutions for the Healthcare Industry Toronto ON, May 27, 2001 – Today at the eHealth 2001 conference David Wattling announced the creation of a one-of-a-kind consortium called the Allied Canadian Health Information Vendors (ACHIVe). ACHIVe has been established to aggressively promote Canada’s collective expertise to the health care industry, both domestically and internationally. “The health care system is arguably one of the most complex systems that exist. By forming this alliance of best of breed technology solution providers, members work together to provide complementary end-to-end solutions to health enterprises. No longer do customers have to compromise functionality by accepting all pieces of a single vendor solution nor be faced with integrating disparate products themselves. Now they can choose the best of breed solutions and have them integrated within a common, secure framework,” says David Wattling, CEO and Chairman, iW Technologies and Chairman of ACHIVe. Founding members iW Technologies Inc., Momentum Healthware, QHR Technologies Inc, and ROAM I.T. are very pleased to see two new members, Fifth Dimension Information Systems and Ware Solutions Inc. join ACHIVe even before its public announcement.

CTN interviews Len Edwards, Vice-President and General Manager Of Nextron Corporation NEXTRON Heats Up the Future Virtually, every time water is transported or moved at below freezing temperatures, the possibility of disaster lurks around the corner. Len Edwards, Vice President and General Manager of Nextron Corporation explains, at the instant where water freezes, pipes could burst, valves could malfunction and many other things could go wrong, resulting in very costly situations. This is only one example of how their newest electrical heat tracing control and monitoring product, TraceMate TM comes to the rescue. Nextron Corporation provides innovative solutions, specifically, temperature control devices to numerous industries worldwide. The company is based in Calgary, Alberta and has been traded on the Canadian Venture Exchange for four years. Extremely successful, Nextron has ongoing research and development programs, modern facilities to design and manufacture product, complete support services and a well-established marketing and sales program. Nextron has been so successful, that it has even sold its product to competitors. Then in August 2000, Nextron and its Board of Directors found themselves wrestling with a problem: What strategic direction should the company take? With the help of Jeff Pallister, Advisor with the Canadian Technology Network (CTN), the company now has a “very clear focus” says Len. Tracing the ‘Right’ Path When Jeff first met with Len, the company had started a business plan, considered possible strategic directions and were reviewing a number of opportunities. What direction, in the long term, would provide the ‘right’ business returns? As they worked closely with Jeff, Len says, “he helped to assess whether the information [the company had gathered] was really solid.” Jeff interviewed the company employees and suggested areas where corrections could be made in order to make Nextron “a strong company”. Len pinpoints, “Jeff’s ability to come in as a well-versed consultant in the technical field was advantageous. It’s always nice to know that the direction you’re taking, is a realistic direction.” Jeff provided that assurance and with a thorough assessment of the company, he put them on the ‘right’ path.

I'd like to digress for a moment to showcase this fine achievement in canadian technology, the Butter Ruler (tm). I know down there in the states, packages of butter have markings on the wrapper that tell you how much butter is there. However, these measurements are not strictly precise, due to the fact that the butter may not be perfectly centered in the wrapper. Here's where Canadian genius steps in, with the Butter Ruler (tm). By placing it against your butter, you can accurately gauge measurements. No more getting 1.0245 cups of butter when you only intended to use 1. Butter Ruler (tm) sells for $69.95, and comes with a fashionable rear mountable magnet, allowing you to store Butter Ruler (tm) on your fridge.

Look Ahead – Get Ahead : The Canadian Technology Human Resources Board I n the Spring of 1999, Columbia in partnership with The Gordon Creative Group, produced and marketed a set of career information tools for The Canadian Technology Human Resources Board (CTHRB), designed to encourage young people to consider careers as technicians and technologists. The suite of interactive products consisted of a tabloid, a reference guide, a CD-ROM and a Web site. To promote the products, Columbia planned and implemented three highly successful product launches across Canada. Extensive local media coverage was generated at each of the launch events and several media opportunities, including an interview on CITY TV, were generated for the Executive Director of CTHRB. The "Look Ahead, Get Ahead" initiative and the suite of products are very successful. Young people have responded enthusiastically to the products. Marketing and promotional efforts increased the number of requests for the products particularly in schools and other educational institutions.

Soviets 'Gung-Ho' for Canadian Technology
by David Forrest
© David Forrest, November 1991 Previous Next The astounding changes witnessed in the Soviet Union recently have given rise to new opportunities for co-operation between Western countries and the Soviet republics. Canada is actively encouraging new trade relationships, and geomatics is a prime candidate for joint ventures of this kind. Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) Canada and its Soviet counterpart – the Main Administration of Geodesy and Cartography (GUGK) of the Council of Ministers of the U.S.S.R. – formally agreed last spring to share geomatics technology and co-operate in developing business opportunities in surveying, mapping, remote sensing and GIS. At the beginning of April, Canadian experts from the federal government, industry and academia hosted GIS seminars in Leningrad and Moscow to demonstrate Canadian technology and identify possible joint ventures. The Canadian team included Jim Linders of the University of Guelph, Ont., head of Georef Systems Ltd., located in Waterloo, Ont.

THE CANADIAN TECHNOLOGY HUMAN RESOURCES BOARD (CTHRB)
By Frances Manning, CTCA Project Manager
The Canadian Technology Human Resources Board (CTHRB) founded in 1995 is a partnership between employers, practitioners and educators. CTHRB's objectives are to publish and maintain industry defined national standards of practice for technicians and technologists and to assist Canadian industrial and occupational organizations identify and resolve human resource issues challenging industry and the technology work force.
CTHRB, in partnership with the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA), is developing the TechnoFile System, an internet based data base and career portfolio for technology workers. At the very beginning of TechnoFile's planning stages, CTHRB realized the need for a methodology to measure and record a technology practitioner's education, experience, training, certification(s) and experiential learning according to the Canadian Technology Standards. The methodology had to take into account thousands of technical workers without formal credentials who acquired their skills on the job. The methodology would also have to evaluate thousands of others who were trained or acquired their experience offshore.
CTHRB wanted further to identify areas of evaluation for nontraditional learning. The technique would evaluate professional development, training acquired in the workplace, self-directed study, non-college courses, employer- sponsored courses, non-accredited courses, accredited courses and military occupational training. CTHRB wanted to acknowledge learning acquired through experience and not experience in and of itself.
