Depending upon which book you pick up on the history of pigs, will determine how long they say they have been around. Some believe it is millions of years while yet others hold to the fact that pigs theyre part of creation. They do know that the first pigs theyre domesticated in Asia and the first book known about raising pigs was written by the Emperor Fo Hi of China. China still remains the leader in the number of different kinds of swine breeds with almost 200 different breeds ranging from small to large. You will find that most farms in China and Asia all have at least one pig. The reason behind this is that they are used for not only food, but to barter for much needed goods and baby piglets can be sold for cash and last but not least, the manure is used to fertilize gardens and fields for crops. Many Asian families keep potbellied pigs because, unlike the larger farm hog, potbellied pigs don't require as much food and are easier to maintain and they thrive well in that hot and humid climate. Because they are relatively small, they don't have to worry about refrigeration to store their meat, thus solving a major problem in outlying areas. The potbellied pig became almost extinct during the WWII famine in China. Some of the refugees brought some north with them and then in the 1950's some were brought into Europe for zoos. Then in the 1970's Keith Connell went to Europe to import unique pigs for the Canadian zoos. Then later they came to the United States and became household pets. Because of the strict import laws in the United States, the gene pool for the potbellied pig is still relatively small compared to their cousins, the farm hogs.

The Sumatran tiger is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Sumatran tigers are the smallest of the tiger subspecies.  The Sumatran tiger has the darkest coat of all tigers. Its broad, black stripes are closely spaced and often doubled. Unlike the Siberian tiger , it has striped forelegs. The Sumatran male tiger weighs between 220 to 300 while the female weighs between 160 to 240 lbs and stands 2.5 feet tall at the shoulder. The Sumatran male is 8 to 9 feet long from its nose to tail while the female is 7 to 8 feet long.
The documentation of the Sumatran tiger has been very poor.   There were an estimated 1,000 tigers in Sumatra in 1978 but, subsequent agricultural development has decreased the tiger population and habitat. In 1992, the Indonesian Department of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation estimated that there were as many as 500 wild Sumatran tigers. 400 in the protected 5 national parks (the largest population is in the Gunung Leuser National Park and has 110 Sumatran tigers) and 2 game reserves and another 100 in unprotected areas.
The captive population of Sumatran tigers is starting to thrive thanks in part to a conservation program developed by the Indonesian Zoological Parks Association and the Tiger GCS.  There are currently 232 captive Sumatran tigers descended from 37 wild tigers.  Of these 246 captive tigers, 68 are in United States and Canadian zoos, 68 in Indonesian zoos, 108 in Europe, 10 in Australian,  and 2 in Japanese zoos.

Some perform upon stages. Other acts prefer the ape enclosures at European zoos. In the case of Canuck-turned-Dutchman Mocky (a.k.a. Dominic Salole, formerly of T.O.'s the Shit), the latter type of venue seems to work best. And much akin to the work of his expat colleagues (nouveau-Berliners Peaches, Gonzales and Daddy Szigeti), Mocky's In Mesopotamia disc careens down a zany, minimal path strewn with funky basslines and lyrical references to primates, ass shakin' and Italian-Americans. Think Daft Punk meets a chemically altered Snoop Dogg but more apey. Before his Feb. 24 Wavelength gig at Lee's Palace with the World Provider and Music for One, eye rang up Mocky in Amsterdam to discuss simians and other philosophical matters. What does In Mesopotamia refer to? It's about the whole other naive place, or planet, that I was coming from when I recorded the CD. Also, Mesopotamia was supposed to be the first place the human species created, where music and culture mixed. Then I found out my grandfather wrote a booked called In Mesopotamia , so it confirmed my theory of living on through your forefathers. I probably also named it for reasons yet to be explained.

Nineteen (58%) zoos responded and of those, 7 (37%) indicated that they had tapirs with histories suggestive of vesicular skin disease. From the 7 zoos with affected tapirs, 27 animals (18 T. indicus T. terrestris ) experiencing a total of 116 episodes of skin disease were identified. Forty-eight percent (13) of the animals experienced more than one episode (mean 4.3 episodes per animal, range 1-24 episodes), and the mean duration of veterinary attention required per episode was 11.5 days (range 1-64 days). Previously affected females were 3.2 times more likely to suffer multiple episodes than previously affected males. The mean duration between episodes in repeatedly affected animals was 208 days (range 12 days-4.6 yrs). During 1991 the incidence rate was 0.36. The mean age of onset of the disease was 4.4 yrs (range 0.3-10.9 yrs). The lesions typically were characterized by coalescing hemorrhagic vesicles and bullae with 80% of the cases having lesions distributed along the dorsal midline. No fatalities have been attributed to this disease and all affected animals appear to recover fully regardless of the treatments given. No causal factors or effective treatments were noted.

(Forest Resources and Agrifoods) Minister discourages removal of moose calves Don’t remove moose calves from their natural surroundings. That was the warning issued today by the minister responsible for wildlife in Newfoundland and Labrador, Kevin Aylward. The minister said every year wildlife officials have to deal with the problem of people removing moose calves from the woods. "In the vast majority of cases people have good intentions when they bring moose calves out of the woods. Unfortunately, their desire to help nature in these instances is usually misplaced." Aylward encourages the public to leave these animals alone. Only if a calf is obviously injured, or if there is a certainty that the mother is dead, is there any reason to intervene. This basic rule should just not be applied to moose calves but to other wildlife species as well. "If people remove a calf which appears to be abandoned because its mother is off feeding - or because a disturbance from people caused the mother to move a short distance away - they are putting themselves in considerable danger," said Aylward. "A mother moose, sensing that her calf is threatened, may attack and cause considerable injury to someone. You are not helping the moose at all by taking them away from their natural surroundings. It is in the best interest of the animal to leave them where they are found." Many calves taken from the woods end up at the Salmonier Nature Park each year which requires considerable effort and uses up valuable resources. Even though the park has developed considerable expertise in hand raising calves, the resources to deal with them in any significant number are very limited. Furthermore, even if they are successfully raised, the problem of what to do with them still exists. Like most zoos and wildlife parks in Canada, Salmonier doesn’t need any more moose and only a few of these facilities are suitably equipped and staffed to handle moose. A recent survey of Canadian zoos has determined that there is little interest by other facilities in receiving calves this year.

When a man wants to murder a tiger he calls it sport; when a tiger wants to murder him he calls it ferocity. George Bernard Shaw
    The Tiger (Panthera tigris)
There was once 8 subspecies of tiger in the wild. Today there are only 5 subspecies remaining. Our best estimates suggest that there are between 5,000 to 7,000 wild tigers remaining today. There are about 1,200 zoo tigers as well. That is as large as the numbers go for the remaining 5 subspecies of the largest cat in the world. Considering a tiger is poached everyday in India doesn't give much hope, does it? Tigers have fascinated mankind for centuries. Two Indian epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana , dating back as far as 300 BC use the tiger as representations of beauty, power and ferocity. In Pakistan, the tiger, no longer found in this country, is scultped on seals of an ancient civilization which once thrived over 5,000 years ago. The ancient peoples of China once interpreted the markings on a tiger's forehead as meaning king. In Korea, "Land of the Blue Dragon and White Tiger," people believe a dragon guards the west while a tiger guards the east. The table shows the tigers scientific and common name and the most recent estimates of their numbers: Scientific Name Common Name Remaining Tigers Panthera tigris tigris Bengal Tiger Panthera tigris virgata

November 11, 1999 A few years ago there were three distinct troops of free-ranging rhesus in the floodplain of the Silver River near Ocala, Fl. They have been there for decades after escaping from the Silver Springs Attraction. Some still remain, although an intensified trapping effort by the attraction a couple of years ago has greatly reduced the population. The issue of Herpes B virus was of concern because many locals and tourists hand-fed the rhesus who would clammer down to boats on the river looking for food. The story is much more involved than this brief account, but I just wanted to point out that rhesus are free-ranging in Florida, and are still hand-fed by an unsuspecting public, with the all the
    risks associated therein.

    What are zoonoses?
    • Zoonoses are diseases that are passed from animals to humans. People with weakened immune systems, the elderly and young children are more likely to get these. Some zoonoses are very dangerous to humans, like E. coli 0157:H7, salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis and rabies. Doctors can usually treat people with zoonoses. However, some untreated zoonoses can be deadly.

Canadian zoo critic takes aim at animal suffering in Indonesian zoos
TORONTO, Monday, April 15th, 2002. Canadian zoo critic Rob Laidlaw, a chartered biologist and project manager with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), recently returned from Java where his organization is campaigning to improve animal welfare standards for zoo animals. Reports Laidlaw: "The state of Indonesia's zoos is absolutely appalling. Barren, undersized cages are the norm. We're talking about the kind of menagerie-style, steel bar, and concrete floor enclosures that were common in Western zoos more than 100 years ago but have long since been consigned to the scrap heap of history by progressive zoos. The accommodation is grossly substandard in most cases, and the general level of care is just as bad. There doesn't seem to be any understanding of the biological and behavioural needs of captive animals." WSPA, together with the organization's Indonesian member society Animal Conservation for Life (KSBK), have released their report entitled
