Ovarian cancer, the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women. Ovarian cancer occurs in 1 out of 57 women. It is expected that 25,400 women will be diagnosed with the disease in 2003. An estimated 14,300 American women will die from ovarian cancer in 2003. Currently, 50 percent of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer die from it within five years; among African-American women only 48 percent survive five years or more. Breast Cancer What Is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that has developed from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs mostly in women, but men can get it, too. The remainder of this document refers only to breast cancer in women. Normal Breast Structure The female breast is made up mainly of lobules (milk-producing glands), ducts (milk passages that connect the lobules to the nipple), and stroma (fatty tissue and connective tissue surrounding the ducts and lobules, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels). Lymphatic vessels are like veins, except that they carry lymph instead of blood. Lymph is a clear fluid that contains tissue waste products and immune system cells (cells that are important in fighting infections). Lymph nodes are small bean-shaped collections of immune system cells that are found along lymphatic vessels. Cancer cells can enter lymphatic vessels and spread to lymph nodes. Most lymphatic vessels in the breast connect to lymph nodes under the arm (axillary lymph nodes). Some lymphatic vessels connect to lymph nodes inside the chest (internal mammary nodes) and either above or below the collarbone (supra- or infraclavicular nodes).

It affects women of all ages, races and social classes. It is very common; about one in twelve women over the course of their lifetime will have the disease in the U.K. Being told you have breast cancer is very frightening. It is a condition which is very difficult to understand and has a bewildering number of different treatments. This booklet has been written especially for you and your family. It provides some information about the disease and its treatment. We hope it will help you and your family to understand the disease and the types of treatment available. WHAT IS BREAST CANCER? The breasts are made up of many glands which are lined by tiny building blocks called cells, which can produce milk. For a reason that is not yet properly understood, sometimes one of these cells gets out of control and it can then produce a lump or tumour. In some women it can take a very long time for the tumour to appear - usually three or four years, sometimes even longer than that. Tumours can be either benign or malignant. Benign (or innocent) tumours remain growing in one area and cannot spread. Malignant tumours are made of cancer cells which can spread to other parts of the body through the blood stream or the lymphatic system (this is explained later). There they can form new tumours called a recurrence, secondaries or metastases.
