Bush seems so callous about putting people to death in Texas, or the fact that he doesn't seem either intelligent enough or concerned enough to see that this rubber-stamping process is a perversion of our justice system. While I and the governor may differ on our view of the death penalty, it remains a fact that the state has the duty to uphold the rights of all of its citizens, even those accused and convicted of crimes. If Bush can't be bothered to consider whether a fair trial was given, or if witnesses were deceitful, or counsel was effective before executing one of the citizens he is sworn to protect, there is no reason to think he will be any more zealous in protecting the rights of the citizens of all the states. Marco Werman: The independent rock scene known as alt country has the spirit of British punk and the rootsiness of American country. And that rockabilly swagger comes roaring through on the newly released CD "The Executioner's Last Songs." Welshman and, now, Chicago resident Jon Langford is one of the founders of the longest, and still running punk bands, The Mekons. When I looked into the one entitled "alt.activism.deathpenalty" I found a diverse meeting place for people who want ot voice their opinion on the hot issue of capital punishment. The age group seemed to vary, but there were a lot of adults that were extremely knowledgable on the subject. It is a rather large forum with almost one hundred messages to browse through from 'net-surfers everywhere. Most of the subscribers seem to be in favor of capital punishment, but the newsgroup is not only for people who share that opinion. Along with the intelligent discussions on the death penalty that range from political to personal views, many arguments take place as well. Some of the subject lines take a radical standpoint such as the one entitled "HANG THE BASTARDS HIGH!" while others are more subtle in voicing their beliefs. I found a lot of perceptive feedback in this newsgruop on the death penalty and why it should be kept legal. Some of the entries contained background information on capital punishment, some were updates on executions taking place (or NOT taking place), and others were personal accounts of people who had lost loved ones to violent crimes. He was convicted of crimes related to the terrorist bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building, and the of killing 168 people (169, if you believe Salon'com's assertion that there was an extra leg in the rubble that didn't belong to anyone). And if you don't know any of this, you've been living in a hole since before April, 1995. I'm not going to sway anyone on the merits of the death penalty here. Those who are for the death penalty are generally strongly for it, those opposed are passionately opposed - no minds would be changed by a short CSP article. And, while I personally oppose the death penalty, even I find it hard to object to the humane and relatively painless execution of a man who admits to having killed 168 people. What I do object to, what does make me most sad, is the rabidity with which we as a people killed this man. From the "Buh-bye Tim" signs on peoples' lawns, to the cheering and hollering on various radio morning shows, it is evident we took great pleasure in this very public execution. While the 1967 film
