by Carl E. Bartecchi Cardiopulmonary resuscitation , commonly known as CPR , can save the lives of victims of ventricular fibrillation and its common predecessor, ventricular tachycardia . In the USA, however, the technique successfully salvages fewer than 5 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. The reasons are sobering. The elderly, who need it most often, are least likely to have CPR training. Bystanders are unlikely to respond because of concern for their own health in this era of AIDS, hepatitis and drug-resistant tuberculosis. Also, although cardiac arrest tends to occur in the home, most family members of cardiac patients remain unfamiliar with CPR techniques. And the hyperacute atmosphere surrounding cardiac arrest does not lend itself to the clear, methodical process taught in CPR courses. There is an alternative to CPR that is simple and easily learned, especially by the elderly. It features maneuvers that can be performed quickly - during the four- to six-minute window of opportunity for restoring

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) What is cardiopulmonary resuscitation?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is administered when someone’s breathing or pulse stops. If both have stopped, then sudden death has occurred. While some of the causes of sudden death include poisoning, drowning, choking, suffocation, electrocution, or smoke inhalation, the most common cause is from heart attack. What are the symptoms of a heart attack?
The following are the most common symptoms of a heart attack. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • severe pressure, fullness, squeezing, pain and/or discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes
pain or discomfort that spreads to the shoulders, neck, arms, or jaw
chest pain that increases in intensity
chest pain that is not relieved by rest of by taking cardiac prescription medication
chest pain that occurs with any/all of the following (additional) symptoms of a heart attack:
    • sweating, cool, clammy skin, and/or paleness

To determine if the victim is conscious, yell " Are you OK ?" and firmly shake the victim. (Do not shakethe victim if you see evidence of serious injury, such as broken bones or bleeding.) If you get no response, lay the victim on his back. Open the airway by placing the palm of your hand on his forehead ( fig. 1 ). While pushing the forehead back, use your other hand (which should be alongside his jaw) to lift the chin forward. Step 2 If you suspect the victim has a neck injury, do not tilt the head ( fig. 2 ). Place your hands alongside the cheeks and pull the face toward you with your index fingers. Look inside his mouth. Sweep out any debris with your finger. Step 3 Next, determine if the victim is breathing ( fig. 3 ). First, look at his chest. Is it moving? Put your cheek next to his mouth. Do you feel any breath? Do you hear any sounds? If not, begin rescue breathing. Step 4 Tilt the victim's head back and take a deep breath. Pinch the victim's nose closed. Place your mouth over the victim's mouth and exhale (

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. CPR or Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency first aid procedure to keep a victim of cardiac arrest alive until emergency personnel arrive. CPR is commonly taught to ordinary people who may be the only persons present in the crucial few minutes before emergency personnel are available. CPR usually saves about 20 to 25 percent of people who go into cardiac arrest . The odds improve to as high as 65% for a "witnessed arrest" where a person is seen to collapse in the presence of witnesses trained in CPR. FIRST send someone to call for help to activate the emergency medical services . CPR can only buy time to apply advanced cardiac life support . Without ACLS , CPR is useless. If you are alone, administer one minute of CPR use 1 to 2 minutes to
