With a population of 722,000 people, the region is home to 25% of the total population of Wales. We cover an area of some 6700 sq kilometres, nearly a third of the total area of Wales. The area extends from St David's in the west to Glynneath in the east, and from Aberystwyth in the north to Port Einon on the Gower in the South. It hosts some of the most spectacular landscapes in Wales and nearly half of the total Welsh coastline belongs to the region. Pembrokeshire alone offers 259 kilometres of breathtaking coastline. At the same time the economy of the area is one of the most diverse in Wales. The company tailors its activities to service the communities of remote rural areas just as it does for the commercial and industrial areas of the region. The larger commercial and retail centres are found in the City of Swansea, Aberystwth, Carmarthen, Haverfordwest, Llanelli, Neath, and Port Talbot. Major industrial areas are concentrated mainly in the Neath, Port Talbot and Llanelli areas with maritime and oil industries centred in Milford and Pembroke. What jobs do people do in West Wales?

programme 7: office work
The average manager and secretary receive around 200 communications a day by post, email, faxes, phone calls, voice mail, sticky notes, pager messages . . . and it goes on! So if you're interested in being a secretary, good communication skills, both verbal and written, are vital. The typical workload of a junior secretary contains more clerical duties such as typing and photocopying. The more senior the level at which a secretary works, the more involvement there will be with responsibilities such as dealing with confidential documents, making all the arrangements for meetings and events and acting on behalf of the boss in his/her absence. Fears that advances in office technology would mean the end of the secretarial role were unfounded, nevertheless their role is changing. The most sought after secretaries are the personal assistants who are competent with computer packages and who often work much like more junior managers. Secretarial work is no longer perceived, as it was for some time, as suitable only for a woman. A century ago, before women went out to work, secretaries were male. Now men are choosing to come back to it, usually because they realise that it can be a very good way into a business or administrative career.

Promising Job Prospects for Graduates
‘Two thirds of employed graduates secure professional jobs within six months following graduation’ says new report ‘A degree is a passport to worthwhile employment’ A first degree is a certain passport to professional employment according to a new report, ‘What do Graduates do? 2001’, published this week which examines the first destinations of the 1999 UK graduate cohort. Of the 68.5 per cent of graduates who found work within six months of graduation, two thirds, 66 per cent, achieved jobs of professional status, ie a job requiring a degree or equivalent academic qualification. Published by AGCAS, the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services; CSU, the Higher Education Careers Services Unit; and UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, ‘What do Graduates do? 2001’, tracks the career destinations of first degree and HND graduates and examines the employment market by occupational sector and academic qualification. Data for the report was gathered through the annual first destination survey comprising information, principally compiled by careers advisers on 176,205 graduates, representing almost 85 per cent of the total (UK domiciled) graduating force of 204,322.

Careers - Port jobs - Overview
Home Back Top Search Employees in the ports industry cover a wide range of jobs - it has sometimes been said that a port is like a small town, with people employed in many varying roles. Larger ports tend to be almost self-sufficient, with employees undertaking almost every conceivable type of job. This may include people to repair the roadways, sweep the quays, maintain warehouse roofs and make fendering for the quays. But generally, jobs can be split into four groupings - Operational, Technical, Administrative and Management. Of these, by far the largest group, with over 50% of all staff, is Operational . These are the heart of any port, or indeed of any company working within a port. These are the people who 'make the wheels turn', who load and unload cargo, handle passengers' baggage, or keep the harbour clear for vessels to navigate safely. Technical staff work mostly in the maintenance of plant and equipment, although larger ports may employ civil and design engineers. About 10% of all employees fall into this category. Administrative staff include all clerical and secretarial levels. These account for some 10% of all employees in the industry.
