SECURITY SYSTEMS
(MANAGING SECURITY TECHNOLOGY)
Bachelor of Science Degree The Bachelor of Science degree program in Security Systems is administered by the Department of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. The program treats the technical aspects of the discipline in order to educate a new breed security director, a manager of technology who integrates crime prevention theory with the design philosophy and hardware and software components of security technology.
By nature, Criminal Justice and Security are information gathering and processing activities. Students must be prepared for a dynamic work environment where computers are used extensively. The computer as an integrating technology is emphasized in the program to achieve remarkable effectiveness as well as exceptional efficiency of crime control performance. The Access Control, Computer Forensics, Computer Security, Intrusion Detection, and Security-Imaging Sensor laboratories which house state-of-the-art equipment serve as technical resources for the program. The lecture and laboratory courseware in access control, computer forensics, computer security, intrusion detection, and physical security teach students how to: manage the movement of people in organizations; detect intrusions on the corporate network; deter acts of corporate espionage and sabotage; and prevent theft of company assets.

Abstract Law Enforcement is one of the fastest growing career fields in our society. The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, has identified the law enforcement career as increasing by thirty-one percent between now and the year 2005. In addition to the demand for more law enforcement officers, the field of law enforcement is enhancing its professionalism by instituting college education requirements for hiring and promotion. To serve the needs of individuals, who cannot attend on-campus classes, this proposal is for the development of EPL 160 Criminal Investigation for Internet delivery. In addition, there is a large demand for law enforcement course by military personnel. An Internet course would assist personnel on active-duty, in the Guard or Reserves to meet their educational needs. Narrative: The Law Enforcement Department has, for several years, been offering courses by distance education. Courses are presently offered by traditional correspondence, on-site delivery, and by IHETS. In a few instances, the student has been able to complete a course by observing the videotapes produced during the IHETS production and completing the necessary assignments that correspond to the course. Converting these courses to an electronic Internet/Web delivery system will add another dimension to Vincennes University's Distance Education Program. A future goal of the Law Enforcement Department is the capability to offer all of the major courses by electronic Internet/Web. Presently, an individual can obtain the A.S. degree in Law Enforcement through distance education.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE
GENERAL INFORMATION
Since the 1960s, America's criminal justice system has undergone a significant shift in operating philosophy and sophistication. Traditionally the system was reactive, i.e., only after a crime was committed did the police respond to the harm. Also, criminal justice practices were not subjected to rigorous scrutiny to determine whether they were effective in preventing crime or recidivism. Now, however, thanks to increased funding for education, research, and evaluation initiated by the 1967 President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, we have a greater understanding of crime, its causes, and criminal justice practices. With this increased knowledge, today's criminal justice professionals are increasingly expected to work collaboratively with the community in identifying, designing, implementing, and evaluating programs to prevent crime and reduce recidivism.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Considerable opportunities for employment in the criminal justice field exist – especially for those best prepared. Since crime is always present in society and public fear of crime remains high, it is anticipated that employment in criminal justice related fields will continue to be favorable. Careers in asset protection and correctional services, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, especially are expected to rise faster than average. Career opportunities generally fall into five major fields: law enforcement, the judicial system, corrections, forensics, and asset protection/private security. Within these fields, employment opportunities exist at the federal, state, and local levels of government. Also, increasingly there are many opportunities within the private sector, both private for profit and nonprofit.

Major Resource Kit Criminal Justice The criminal justice program offers undergraduate students an opportunity to pursue studies leading to law school, graduate school or a career in the administration of justice. The program is structured around a core of criminal justice courses on such topics as law enforcement, the judicial process, juvenile justice, corrections and criminal law. Since any criminal justice system reflects the structure, ideas and concerns of the society within which it operates, the criminal justice curriculum also includes required courses in sociology, political science, psychology, psychology and history. At the University of Delaware, a degree in criminal justice is viewed as a general liberal arts degree. The curriculum, therefore, emphasizes the importance of representative courses in the arts and humanities, mathematics and science. Consequently, graduating criminal justice majors will have achieved both the skills and breadth of knowledge expected of well-educated men and women in a complex and pluralistic society. Although many criminal justice graduates attend law school, an increasing number are choosing other areas of graduate work as well. Students with a degree in criminal justice often elect to do their graduate work in criminal or public administration. However, they can also pursue graduate degrees in any behavioral or social science including political science, sociology, or psychology. Those who seek employment after completing their degree requirements have generally good prospects in such areas as correctional counseling, court administration, law enforcement and private security. In addition, many public and private agencies will have criminal justice related job openings for planners, researchers, data analysts and others who have sharpened their skills in statistics and computer science.

Federal Law Enforcement Careers
There are over 100 law enforcement jobs with the federal government. These jobs range from being a federal police officer at the U.S. Capitol Police to being a Special Agent with the FBI. Many federal law enforcement jobs are in the competitive service which means that people applying for them must be evaluated by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). OPM will give the written entrance test for the agency. OPM maintains job information centers throughout the U.S. They are a very good source to find out which agencies are hiring. You can call their USAJOBS hotline at (202) 606-2700 or visit their web site at www.usajobs.opm.gov
Some agencies such as the FBI are exempt from OPM's competitive service procedures. Positions with these agencies are classified as excepted service jobs. These agencies have direct hire authority and will give the written entrance examination themselves. To apply for these jobs, you must contact the specific agency.

The Top 7 Trends for Private Investigators Criminal Defense The criminal defense investigator is the right arm of the successful criminal defense lawyer. Your main goal is to help the lawyer get an acquittal for your client. To do this, you must find evidence to establish reasonable doubt about whether your client committed the crime. You therefore need to research the law relating to the crime that your client is charged with so you understand the specific elements of the crime. You need to inspect and examine all materials handed over by the prosecution. You should also examine every police and prosecution document, report and form, no matter how routine or insignificant it may seem to look for any inconsistencies. Your job may also include examining the crime scene , interviewing witnesses , and anything else that the lawyer thinks might help win the case.

... Useful addresses Introduction Forensic Science is the application of the natural sciences to matters of the law; it includes a variety of different activities and specialities. In practice, forensic science draws upon the principles and methods of all the traditional sciences, such as physics, chemistry and biology. At the same time, there are differences between forensic science and traditional sciences. These differences are partly attributable to the fact that forensic science has some unique objectives, and partly to its continuous and necessary interaction with the legal system. Employment
The majority of forensic scientists are employed in government or police laboratories.
At Lothian and Borders Police Forensic Science Laboratory staff normally work on cases in one of three main sections. The Biology Section deals essentially with crimes against the person. Violent crime makes up most of the case types encountered and the majority of examinations involve blood and other body fluids. Both traditional serological and DNA testing is used. This section also deals with the analysis of hairs and fibres.

Opening Remarks re: Airbus Investigation
by Commissioner Philip Murray, Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Monday, January 6, 1997
  • Good morning. I will try to keep my remarks brief, but there are a few key points I would like to make. Then I will be happy to take your questions. With me today is Deputy Commissioner Herman Beaulac. From the RCMP's perspective, the government's decision to resolve this case out-of-court is good news. For months, I have been concerned about the potential impact on the criminal investigation of a long and very public civil process. As Minister Rock stated, the RCMP must be able to conduct its investigations without having to disclose important information prematurely in a separate civil case. The possibility of having to divulge sources or information from those sources during a civil trial would have interfered with well-established police practises and procedures. It would have set a dangerous precedent.

James Brown of the EPA's Criminal Investigation Division, and University of Rhode Island's Scott Chanthaphouvong. The Washington Center is pleased to partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Criminal Investigation Division (CID) as an internship placement for Environment Internship Program (EIP) students interested in environmental law and enforcement. Since 1992, the EPA's Office of Radiation (OAR) has offered internship opportunities to college students interested in pursuing careers in the environment. Most of these students have backgrounds in the social and/or environmental sciences and plan to attend graduate or law school upon completing their undergraduate degrees. With this new partnership with CID, Environment Internship Program students interested in the legal field can now gain an internship experience that is generally reserved for law students. The Washington Center's EIP is well known throughout the EPA. Each semester, a new group of interns arrive in OAR's programming offices like clockwork to begin an internship cycle. OAR staffs set their schedules and workload distribution with the valuable assistance of EIP interns in mind. Word about this partnership reached the EPA's Criminal Investigation Division. After a flurry of phone calls and meetings between James Brown , a special agent for the CID, and Orandra Cotton , EIP program director, The Washington Center is proud to announce that starting this spring semester 2000, the Criminal Investigation Division of the EPA will host Washington Center interns.
