Aerospace Careers: Engineering Mission Planner
At the Dryden Flight Research Center, NASA's premier aeronautical facility, engineering mission planners (EMPs) are involved in all flight projects.
What is an Engineering Mission Planner?
This highly modified F-15 was a NASA research aircraft for most of the 1990s. Often described as aeronautical engineers "on the go," their main responsibilities include establishing flight test procedures, developing flight test plans, coordinating research requirements, developing flight cards, coordinating pilot training, and taking part in pre- and post-flight briefings. Engineering mission planners monitor their research flights in the mission control center, keeping in radio contact with the pilot. They conclude each mission by writing post-flight reports, filling out logbooks, and starting preparations for the next flight.
The Work of Engineering Mission Planners
When a research project at Dryden nears the flight phase, the project engineer begins depending on an engineering mission planner to keep the operations schedule coordinated properly and intact. One of the EMP's first tasks is setting up a database to keep track of all the parameters and restrictions associated with the project aircraft and any modifications to the structure. This database is used to establish the operational envelope of the research aircraft - speeds, limits on maneuvering and G-forces, maximum altitude, load-carrying capability, and other similar factors based on structural dynamics, propulsion, and safety.

11. ECITB Careers: Engineering Design

http://www.ecitb.org.uk/careers/proeng.htm
ENGINEERING DESIGN Design engineers create structures and systems that contain and carry out processes safely and efficiently. Environmental impact is taken into account and designers look for ways to minimise this. Most companies employ engineers specifically to deal with environmental issues. The design process is carried out using Computer-Aided Design systems (CAD), and simulation techniques. The role of the design engineer in a project is explained in How the industry works The most useful degree subjects for a career in this area are: On-the-job training allowed me to develop my technical skills under the guidance of senior engineers. After two months I was assigned to site to work on a herb and spices process and packaging facility project, to provide technical support to the civil/structural superintendent there. However daunting the prospect of such responsibility was at the time, this experience proved invaluable. The hands-on training and the ability to see things through has taught me much more than if I had spent the same time studying drawings in the office. It has also enabled me to gain an appreciation of quality assurance, safety, communication and commercial awareness.

12. ECITB Careers: Engineering Design Specialist
work.gif skills.gif study.gif ENGINEERING DESIGN SPECIALIST. work.gif. study.gif.I started work after a threeyear HND course in mechanical engineering.
http://www.ecitb.org.uk/careers/techeds.htm
ENGINEERING DESIGN SPECIALIST Engineering design specialists take the broad outline from the professional engineer and turn it into detailed design drawings for craftspeople to use during the construction phase of a project. Designers need some drawing skills, but all projects now use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) techniques to produce the plans. The main area of expertise is therefore deciding which design option is best for the client. Engineering design specialists usually specialise in one of the following:
  • Piping design - working out fiendishly complicated systems of pipes
  • Electrical and instrumentation - the circuits and control systems can be even more elaborate than the pipework (and that’s saying something)
  • Mechanical equipment - that’s designing all the machines with moving parts
  • Civil/structural design - in other words all the structure and infrastructure that holds the piping, electrical and mechanical components of a plant together.
I started work after a three-year HND course in mechanical engineering. But you can do an apprenticeship with day or block release instead.

C ongratulations on choosing a career in computing!
Your success will depend on the level of effort you put into your education and training. Make the most of your opportunities now for a future in Computing.
Why Computing? Today, computers are used in almost every aspect of our lives: in car engines, microwave ovens, video games, watches, telephones, desktops at home and work, mainframe computers in government and industry, and supercomputers expanding the frontiers of science and technology. The computer industry is one of the fastest growing segments of our economy and that growth promises to continue well into the next century. To maintain a competitive edge, industry and commerce must continue to make creative scientific and engineering advances as well as produce high quality products. More than ever, there is a demand for a prepared work force with the scientific and technical training necessary to perform effectively on the job. Now is the time to plan your future in computing.
    Preparing for College
Academic Preparation Most professionals in the computing industry have at least an undergraduate degree in mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, information systems, or electrical engineering. Many have advanced degrees. They, however, all started preparing for their careers long before they began their undergraduate degrees.
