(Larimer)
The Forestry, Wildlife and Natural Resources program is designed for transfer into a baccalaureate degree program at Colorado State University in a natural resources field. This two year degree program will enable students to transfer with a minimal loss of credit. It also provides job entry level training for technician level jobs. Natural resources management requires a broad overview and a general understanding of all the components of an ecosystem and its interrelationships. This program is designed to introduce students to a wide range of basic concepts and provide technician-level training for many outdoor careers. Assessment testing is required of all students. Students who place into REA 090 (or above), ENG 100 (or above), and MAT 100 (or above), may begin this program of study. All other students see the test scoring section for preparatory course placement.

Introduction
Programs in forestry and natural resources intend to prepare people to manage, protect, conserve, and use natural and renewable resources. People in forestry and natural resources study resources such as forests, air, water, soil, fish, and wildlife. Programs focus on applying the natural and social sciences to the management of forests and other natural resources. This area of study covers a variety of instructional programs including forest engineering, forest management, forest science, and resource recreation management. Specialty options within each of these programs are also available. For information on fisheries and wildlife study, see the Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences program. Forestry programs prepare people to manage and use natural resources on forest lands. Instruction in these programs includes biology, disease and pest control, ecology, resource protection, mapping, statistics, harvesting and production technology, management, economics, public relations, forest policy and regulations, and development of improved tree varieties. Most community colleges have one- or two-year programs that can be transferred to four-year colleges and universities offering programs in forestry and natural resources. Many four-year colleges and universities offer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs in these areas. Five-year programs in forestry are also available.

Alison W. Bowers and Martha C. Monroe An important part of working with youth today is facilitating the discovery of the countless career paths available to them. An exciting discipline that you can present and explore with them is this field of natural resources. This fact sheet helps you get acquainted with natural resource career opportunities, describes how local agencies can assist you, and provides activities to introduce young people to a profession in natural resources.
Career Basics
Choosing a career is a major decision in a young person's life. The 4-H National Center for Workforce Preparation provides curriculum resources and other forms of assistance to help 4-H'ers acquire basic skills, explore career options, and gain experience in the workplace. The 4-H Council lists grant opportunities for 4-H agents to receive funds to establish career-related programs and partnerships. The Florida 4-H program also offers career activities including a What Are My Skills? Worksheet (4HGCR32). The United States Department of Education and Labor oversees the School to Work program, which provides support and funding to states and local communities to develop school to work initiatives. These initiatives vary from state and state; Florida supports several school to work programs. Program components can include linking with community colleges, partnering with industry, and locating guest speakers to visit schools and clubs. Visit

Graduate School: An Entry Level Degree in the Environmental Field An Excerpt from EarthWork: A Resource Guide to Nationwide Green Jobs

Edited by Joan Moody and Richard Wizansky

Chapter 4: Green Graduate Schools Thinking about whether graduate school is worth the time and money? According to an expert with experience both in academia and in government hiring, "Graduate education is becoming the entry level degree in natural resources." Frank Gregg, former director of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and of the University of Arizona's School of Renewable Natural Resources, says the days are gone when a bachelor's degree was enough for many natural resources jobs. By contrast, jobs are readily available with a bachelor's in environmental engineering or in other environmental specialties, where demand exceeds supply. In the natural resources disciplines, however, there is a kind of buyer's market except in specialties such as wetlands ecology. Several hundred colleges in the United States are churning out natural resources and environmental science graduates with advanced degrees. Out of 141 responses to a Conservation Fund survey of 390 colleges and universities with natural resources or environmental science programs, 37 percent had graduate programs. The survey did not include environmental engineering or waste management programs or agricultural specialties such as range science.
