by Time Mauch, Supervisory Park Ranger "To me, no picture of the National Parks is complete unless it includes the Ranger, the Dudes, the Sagebrushers, and the savages." Stephen Mather, Director of NPS, 1917-1929 Since the early days of 1880 when Harry Yount served as the first national park ranger in Yellowstone protecting game, rangers have always had a multitude of tasks and responsibilities which ensure that park resources and the public are safe and protected. These duties range from protecting the buffalo in Yellowstone, to preserving the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, to protecting Civil War battlefields. Protection rangers assist other park divisions in the planning and implementation of various land management strategies. These range from vegetative screening at the Cold Harbor unit, to the clearing of a wooded area at Gaines' Mill for historic scene restoration. Natural resource inventories are often conducted and sometimes prescribed burns occur in various park units as a cost-effective, environmental alternative for clearing brush in order to keep to the park's enabling legislation of restoring the area to its historical scene. Wildfires are also fought and investigated by rangers.

Fighting Fire From The Air
Airborne Infra-Red Imaging System (AIRIS)
S-2T Airtanker S-2A Airtanker UH-1H Super Huey Helicopters ... Federal Excess Property In support of its ground forces, the CDF 2003 emergency response air program includes 15 Grumman S-2T 1,200 gallon airtankers, 8 Grumman S-2A 800 gallon airtankers, 9 UH-1H Super Huey helicopters, and 13 OV-10A air attack aircraft. From 13 air attack and nine helitack bases located statewide, aircraft can reach most fires within 20 minutes.
The air attack planes fly overhead directing the airtankers and helicopters to critical areas of the fire for retardant and water drops. The retardant used to slow or retard the spread of a fire is a slurry mix consisting of a chemical salt compound, water, clay or a gum-thickening agent, and a coloring agent. At nine pounds per gallon an S-2A can carry 7,200 pounds. The S-2T can carry 10,800 pounds.
The CDF OV-10A air attack plane allows personnel to direct air operations from above an incident.

While both airtankers and helicopters are equipped to carry fire retardant or water, the helicopters can also transport firefighters, equipment and injured personnel. All CDF Aircraft are strategically located throughout the state at airbases and helicopter bases. During high fire activity, CDF may move aircraft to better provide statewide air support.

Homes can be saved from wildfire by defensible space. Fire Safe Planning Program D eveloping California communities with Fire Safe Planning within the urban-wildland interface (UWI) helps structures survive wildfires. It is aimed at federal, state and local fire prevention staff to help homeowners, landowners, decision-makers, and local government planners make informed land use decisions. Structures and lives are put at risk when accumulated fuels make property damage more likely and fire fighting harder. Increasing numbers of structures in the UWI change fire fighting strategies and hamper the ability of firefighters to defend public and private property. The Fire Safe Planning Program is responsible for providing access to and interpretation of fire safe laws and regulations covering general fire prevention and wildland fire safety, recommended standards for fire and building codes, including fire hazard assessment and zoning, infrastructure safety, hazard mitigation to create defensible space, and building construction standards. The program also provides guidelines for hands-on implementation of fire safe strategies for the development of public safety elements within county general plans.
