If you have an interest in animal nutrition, veterinary medicine, education, as well as general animal husbandry and care you will find internship opportunities at many zoos and aquaria You will find additional information pertaining to internships and jobs under the " Resources and Strategies .. ." link and the " Summer internship and jobs" link in the main index.
The American Zoo and Aquaria Association Virtually all zoos and aquaria have established internship and volunteer programs. Several are listed on this page. The AZA website is a good place to go to find internship and job opportunities. http://aza.org Search with the word 'internship" as a descriptor. You'll be taken to the on-line issues of the AZA Communique, which is the journal of the association. At the back of each issue are listed a variety of jobs, summer programs, volunteer positions and internships. Another way to use the AZA website is to search the AZA Membership and go to the homepages of different zoos and aquariums. Most will have internship opportunities listed (often under "Education") in many areas ranging from husbandry, reproduction, nutrition, etc. One example would be the Philadelphia Zoo's many offerings ( Internship Programs at The Philadelphia Zoo Even if an AZA member does not list internships you'll be given contact information you can use to inquire about creating your own internship. Portraits of Veterinary Medicine
About two years ago the communications office at the School received a call from Lee Gutkind, a Pittsburgh writer. "I am an immersion journalist and writing a book about veterinary medicine," he said. "I want to present a true picture of veterinary medicine today, describe the day-to-day duties and dilemmas clinicians encounter and show the diversity that exists in the field." Mr. Gutkind visited the School many times, followed clinicians around, saw them on the farms, in the operating rooms, in the intensive care units and in clinics. He visited private practices, zoo practices and talked to many people in the profession.
Special Gifts
An anonymous alumnus pledged a gift of $600,000 to support the renovation of student housing at New Bolton Center. Mr. Jack McCrane made a gift of $100,000 in honor of his wife, Margrit, to the Humanitarian Fund, an endowment fund established at VHUP to assist needy clients in providing veterinary care for their animals.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM – ZOOLOGICAL MEDICINE
Prepared by Darryl J. Heard, September 2002
INTRODUCTION
The Zoological Medicine residency is three years in duration. The first two years are spent in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), and the last year at White Oak Plantation. During the first two years at the VMTH the residents rotate through the hospital for 2 weeks, then 1 week on field service, then 1 week off for professional development and research. Beginning in 2001, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has agreed to employ our residents as clinical instructors for 1 year. This is contingent upon successful completion of our three-year program. We accept a new resident each year. PROGRAM GOALS The main goal of the Zoological Medicine program is adequate preparation of residents for a diversity of careers involving conservation and nondomestic animal health. We also expect residents that successfully complete this program to pass the Qualifying and Certifying examinations of the American College of Zoological Medicine within 2 years of graduation.. First Two Years – VMTH At the end of the first two years in the program the resident must be able to: 1. Make independent decisions related to the medical and surgical management of nondomestic animals.

Quick Bibliography Series Bibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the National Agricultural Library, are intended primarily for current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are not indepth exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject. However, the citations are a substantial resource for recent investigations on a given topic. They also serve the purpose of bringing the literature of agriculture to the interested user who, in many cases, could not access it by any other means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-line searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic and evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria. The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding these is available upon request from the author/searcher.

OBITUARY – Dr Richard Faust FEATURE ARTICLES North American River Otters in European Zoos – a Husbandry Survey Water Displacement the African Way Teachers' Evaluation of Zoo Education Letter to the Editor Book Reviews ... Recent Articles OBITUARY Richard Faust, 1927–2000 Richard Faust was born on 24 June 1927 in Droemersheim/Rhine. He studied palaeontology, anthropology and zoology at the University of Mainz. On 15 April 1952 he became the first Assistant and Curator of Birds of Frankfurt Zoo's Director Dr Bernhard Grzimek. Among others he hand-raised 186 rheas, 21 ostriches, 27 emus, 52 ocellated turkeys and an Andean condor, as well as a polar bear. He not only raised all these animals, but published scientific papers and films on his observations. Another of his tasks was to keep the animal records. In 1958 Dr Faust was promoted to Assistant Director, and in the same year he accompanied the first female okapi, named Safari, from the Belgian Congo to Germany. Safari and the male Epulu established the first continuing breeding of okapis in Germany. Together with Professor Grzimek, Dr Faust designed the Bird Halls that opened in 1961, and in 1978 the Grzimek House for nocturnal and diurnal small mammals. Both houses are still considered the best of their kind in Europe and show how visionary were the plans of this excellent team. A lot of first breeding successes for Europe or even worldwide were achieved, for example with the kiwi and both species of Picathartes From May 1974 until June 1992 Dr Faust was Director of Frankfurt Zoo. New zoo biological findings showed that the zoo's small size (11 hectares) was insufficient to allow it to keep some of the large mammals. Dr Faust therefore reduced the high number of species – even the keeping of such attractive animals as elephants (1986) or polar bears (1991) was terminated. In 1975 the first phase of an 80-hectare county zoo – the Niddazoo – was opened with the financial help of Frankfurt Zoological Society. It is difficult to understand that this Niddazoo was closed in 1987/88 for local political reasons. The vision of a new 200-hectare Eco-Zoo on another site will still need some years for realization.

Unusual Animal Careers Part Eleven:
By Diana Guerrero

Editor's Note: This is the continuation of an ongoing series related to animal careers. To reap the benefits of all the tips and requirements of this series it is suggested that you read them in order. You can do this easily by going back to the index page. The first parts of this series briefly discussed types of careers and which ones might be appropriate for you, how to begin researching those career options, and how to find specific information in the area of your interest to help you further clarify your goals and contacts. Now the series is discussing both domestic and exotic animal work and how to begin to get practical experience and prepare for that career. The next few articles will take a closer look at different roles and what kind of training or education is necessary for them. To simplify some of this information it has been grouped by similar categories. Unique training for some areas not listed will be included in another section. If you see any additions to jobs and want to provide me with a description and the related educational aspects please contact me. Certainly all of the options will not be here, but those that are can help you find related areas of interest or spark another thought to something similar. Since the career field is changing so fast, many new positions will crop up every year.
